    this weekly video is in response to a lot of questions about HTP tig welders.
    Are they good? What is the max thickness of aluminum that an HTP invertig 221 can handle? etc...etc...
    So in this video, I got hold of an HTP tig unit and did some welding on .080" thick 3003 aluminum as well as some really thick 6061 bar stock. I used a helium/argon mix for the thick aluminum and it got me over the hump.

    2 years and counting my 221 is still going strong. Just ordered a CK 9 and gas lens parts for snaking my way through a Chump Car rollcage this weekend. IMO I've tended to like the CK torches. Their smaller size, duty ratings, and superflex cables pulled me to the dark side :)
    I emailed Jeff the other day and found out the Dual Voltage 221DV version has a power factor of .99 so you can run it on some pretty tiny breakers.

    • @57Joe
      @57Joe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the dual voltage 221. I actually bought it over the standard 221 because my 220v circuits are 30 amp and aren't enough for the standard 221. I can go full power at 220 amps on the machine and never trip the 30a breaker. The machine is awesome.

    Hi Jody great video I know this is old but when you change the EP and EN amplitude it’s only one that gets changed. If you move say EN to 50% the EP auto adjusts to 100% and vice versa. Also the dynasty 350 is amps you adjust and with the 221 it is the percentage you adjust so it’s different. With the miller you can adjust both EP and EN but not with the HTP. Just wanted to let you know in case folks didn’t understand by the settings you showed. It’s a little misleading. Basically you can be in EN 50% of the time and EP 100% of the time. Great video as always though, thanks for showing.

    the tubes were ground like that when I got them. But you are correct . Never grind aluminum on a bench grinder or you get a face full of wheel ...but there are grinding wheels for angle grinders specifically designed for grinding aluminum. Too rough a grind, and it shows up in the weld.

  • @weldingtipsandtricks
    @weldingtipsandtricks  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    If it was for a structural purpose, I would have preheated to about 200f and also beveled to get more strength, and made larger fillet welds. The print only called for a 1/8" ( 3.2mm) fillet weld all the way around.

    its more like 1.3 amp/thou for aluminum for the first several seconds, but depending on the size of the part, once the parts heats up can change to way less than that. a foot pedal is the way to go for aluminum jobs.

  • @weldingtipsandtricks
    @weldingtipsandtricks  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The torch cable held up fine for the 10 inches or so of weld at 220 amps. I wouldn't recommend continuous welding at 220 amps with any air cooled torch but this CK #17 really surprised me. Its not the flex loc torch, just a plain 17 with no valve.

    I've had mine coming up on a year now. Great machine and I was pretty happy to find a CK R torch and massive ground clamp in the box. A low profile pedal is nice too.
    FYI, the units are italian made by Stel Itl and the insides were very nice when I popped mine open. I've found some interesting tid bits too by looking through their manuals like that VRD system. Holding down stick mode toggles it. My earlier manual missed it.
    Sweet work as always Jody :)

    Nice job Jody. If that last piece that came into the shop was for a structural purpose, would you have torched the aluminum to get it hotter to work? Seems that I remember an old video of yours where you used heat to get the aluminum to not suck all the heat out of your weld.

    yes i have that same thing going on, my gums pulling back away from my teeth and teeth that have whole chunks just breaking out of them. then i just found out today that the 2% thoriated tungstens are radioactive! they didn't teach us old timers that in welding school! we just knew about how not to end up blind by using #12 gold mirrored lens and to drink milk after welding galvanize to neutralize then zinc, you can taste that (metal fever.) they told us too much zinc and you get alzheimer's.

    I think if you used a cloth polishing wheel on a grinder with some mothers aluminum polish it should make it shine like chrome when you are done. That is how I do it. Make sure you don't have to weld on it any more though, because man is it a bitch to get the weld to work after you apply it and buff it. LOL

    i got to try the diversion with the wireless foot pedal, it worked 90 feet from the machine with (obviously) no wire cable. i would think in a multi -machine work site that wireless foot pedals would be a problem, cross communication between different pedals/machines. the diversion did make an excellent aluminum weld. i turned it up to maximum frequency,about 300 i think, it was LOUD but absolutely perfect weld (and quick too).

    At the place I work at they would have told me to weld something like this with a spool gun and make it look good. Spool gun is great but at times it is like using a sledge hammer to tune a piano. Am thinking of changing jobs due to the fact they will not allow me to practice other forms of welding process on more delicate / thinner materials. Received prints for a stainless steel pipe job requesting full penetration welds. Again, would not let me use TIG for the root.

    Jody, have you tried the brown tipped zirconia 'tungstens' yet? i've been using them for about 2 years and find the advantages of less 'whiskering' on the ball formed when ac welding on aluminum, brass, etc. and if you get in really close with 2% or pure tungsten the aluminum will sometimes accumulate on the electode after about 1 hour. Not so much on the zirconia(zirconium?) Also I'm using the copper lead in/arc start trick and tig finger with great results. Keep up the great uploads & thanks.

    excellent question. i've had good results with the 60 grit dremel 'barrels' and the 'maroon' scotchbrite discs from cgw and walter abrasives. the 'barrels' are also available for the air and electric pencil grinders too but watch the rpm's as they'll fly apart. i'm using these for cracked and busted aluminum castings and adding boyesen and v-force reeds/blocks to vintage motocross bike cylinders, though for heavy grinding nothing beats the carbide or hss burr tool(watch those sharp chips!).

    Hi, great video, I have this welder and I love it, I have had a hard time getting 1/2" aluminum to puddle running straight argon. I have read that helium-argon gives a hotter weld that straight argon so how much would you say is due to lowering the frequency and how much due to the gas? I didn't know about the frequency so I will have to give that a try as I was running at a much higher frequency.

    Hey I really enjoy watching your videos and always learn something from them even being an aluminum welder myself but the only thing I would have to say is having taught welders I noticed that the sequence in which you assemble the the torch head is crucial to determine issues.
