Far Eastern guns where even smaller at 40-50 Calibers why this is whether it be because they found out smaller & longer means more power or that it was because of the low quality or lower amounts of iron in the Japan and tenegashima designs just being shared and adopted by Korea and China.

    Kingdom was really cool as people watching it might learn some history by accident 😂 also touching on the different design of the Korean blade, a wider blade also stabilizes the trajectory and makes it easier to align the blade in the direction of the swing, making it easier to chop off zombie heads

  • @Oxtocoatl13
    @Oxtocoatl13 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Kingdom did a really good job of keeping many traditional zombie tropes, like established weaknesses and human inability to co-operate being the real villain, while bringing a lot of interesting new stuff, like the early modern setting, court intrigue and the thematic undercurrent of the whole thing being rich people's fault. Without the corrupt family there wouldn't have been a catalyst and without the general neglect of the ruling class the poor wouldn't have been desperate enough to eat zombie flesh.

    Uh, disagreement on the historical role of swords. Okay, so in literally every military [except the Rome], the sword was always a sidearm. It is an absolutely shit battlefield weapon until plate armor became so good that should became unnecessary, and even then, the swords used were extremely long. Polearms are cheaper, easier to use, and offer greater range and damage than swords. During the 17th and 18th century, swords became restricted to cavalry and officers. In ww1, swords were replaced by pistols because holding a sword made you a target. As for comparing swords to guns, the modern concept of a pistol is more appropriate because it is typically an officer's weapon. Throughout history, the smaller the weapon, the more important the person.

    One thing about modern assault rifles -- when the rounds hit a body, they yaw or spin, and fragment inside the body, causing a small internal explosion. They go in leaving a small hole, but go out blowing out a chunk of flesh. They would actually be pretty effective anti-zombie weapons, especially given their capacity for automatic fire.

    Since the key is the destruction of the brain, a simple hammer seems a good choice, at least against a single zombie.
    Groups would be a problem though, as they could overwhelm the hammerer.
    But the zombies seem to use their teeth more than anything else for attacking, so leather armor that covers pretty much the entire body should be effective.
    Though leather armor tight enough to protect the entire body yet allows for brawling will be hot for the wearer.

      It would do work, certainly. 7.62 (AK caliber) likes to pitch and yaw when it hits a target, whereas 5.56 (M4 family) is a faster flying bullet. Against un-armored meatbags, I'd prefer the slow heavy lead balls that exert all the force on impact rather than bullets that maintain their force for a bit. Now, if the zombies were tightly packed together, the chance pops up for some through-and-through shooting, and I'm all for economization, so I agree with ya there.
      I'd just prefer something that loads a bit faster.

  • @XThexReaperX

    It probably isn't right to say that sword ownership was restricted by governments to prevent revolts.
    Swords in pre-modern cultures take a similar role as pistols do now; they aren't primary military weapons (as you said), but they are portable, versatile weapons that you can carry day to day. They were a status symbol because of their expense and because wearing one gave you the ability (and, implicitly, the right) to use violence in civilian contexts.
    It's worth repeating that they were often pretty expensive. Most people back then didn't have a lot of money to waste on products that were not directly useful in their day to day lives, and a sword is not a great weapon for hunting, farming, fishing, foraging or anything else ordinary people did to survive. So buying a very expensive weapon whose primary purpose was killing people did not make economic sense for most people prior to the modern era. You could defend yourself with a knife or a big stick almost as well and both of those things were significantly cheaper and more useful to you day to day.
    As economies grew towards the beginning of the modern era, you do actually see (at least in Europe) a lot more commoners buying swords, since they now had more disposable cash, wanted to signal higher social status, and also were more likely to own valuable assets that they might need to defend from rivals in a context where legal systems and policing were still very rudimentary.

    I could totally survive a zombie apocalypse. So long as I have a few simple things, not asking much really, just some tiny things....
    A
    large sprawling heavily defended fortress
    town
    A well trained private army with absolute loyalty and obedience to me
    A massive stockpile of weapons and ammo and supplies of all kinds
    Power plants and water stations
    Personnel to run facilities
    Hospital and medical supplies and doctors
    A population of loyal obeidiant subjects
    Heavily armored vehicles for supply collection and other duties
    Fuel stations and production ability
    Ok everything a micro nation would need to sustain itself and etc.

    I disagree with the part about modern rounds, hollow points and soft points can easily be used to make up for the lack of diameter, for those who don't know, hollow and soft points deform and flatten the head of the bullet making it wider. Not going to mention shotguns since they're comparing old and new rifles.

      A medieval peasants made 2 pounds a year while a knight made at least 20 pounds a year. Serfs work farms to make food, peasants learn skills to make things , while knights fight to keep them safe! In order for cities to form you need large supplies of food and water on a regular basis to thrive. But people who kill on a regular basis aren't simply going to put down their arms and work the farms for pocket change especially when the only thing they know how to do is kill and are very good at it!

      Matchlocks, while time consuming and labour intensive to load, along with being inaccurate beyond about 50 yards, are much easier to use then a bow, as after the loading process and your target is within range, you point and shoot.

    • @aaronlimeuchin7352
      @aaronlimeuchin7352 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@IamgRiefeR7 agreed. Despite its disadvantages, matchlocks are more effective in volley fire and you can easily train thousands of peasants with matchlocks at a month compared to a bow which might take 6 months or more in training.
      That is why the Japanese daimyos especially Oda Nobunaga see the full potential in matchlock rifles and his army beat the Takeda clan even though he was outmatched by the Takedas by 3 to 1.
      For the Koreans, they think matchlock is a cumbersome weapon with no qualities compared to the bow, but what they did not take in account is that matchlock rifle have the power to penetrate the armor of the time such as samurai armor.
      That would be one of the key reasons that the Korean forces would failed spectacularly against the Japanese during the early months of the Imjin War.

    I thank you for pointing out the difference between today's ammunition and that of the past. A lot of people think that the many amputations performed during the civil war were because doctors didn't know what they were doing. The truth is that the miniballs used in the firearms of the time actually shattered bones. There was really no other option

    • @tomicbranislav3
      @tomicbranislav3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      pretty much the truth.... Muzzle velocity was low but the masket balls were big so when you get hit it basically pulverised the bone so its either cut the limb off or die

    • @LENZ5369
      @LENZ5369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      And what do you think happens when a .556 hits bone?
      Modern smokeless gunpowder is 3-5 times (depending on the type/quality of the black powder) more powerful than an equivalent amount of black powder -if you were to put modern powder into a black powder weapon; it would likely explode.
      Modern rifles/powder have significantly more energy than matchlocks -you guys are seemingly(?) mistaken in believing that a small entry wound; means less internal damage -a modern rifle round to the head normally imparts enough energy to turn large adjacent portions of tissue to mush.

    • @tomicbranislav3
      @tomicbranislav3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      @@LENZ5369 Nope 5.56x45mm will shatter the bone not pulvarise it... there is a difference, it does a lot of tissue damage but trust me not nearly as much as an .76 or .80 Caliber musket ball... that thing is more of a bloody handcannon than anything else plus the musket balls were usually made of lead which is soft and expands rapidly upon impact.... and what is left is not a nice view to look at trust me I know. I have seen firsthand what happens when a 9mm, .45 ACP, 5.56x45mm, 5.45x39mm, 7,62x39mm do to a human body... the closest in raw damage is the .50cal.... Cheers from a not so old Airbourne Helldiver

      @@LENZ5369 Modern 5.56 ammo is great at putting small holes through people, but unless rounds impact bone the tissue damage is far less than with a musket ball. Something the earlier comments missed was that musket balls were 'dirty', and often carried powder residue and other toxins into the wound. They had no way to treat blood-poisoning, so the limb was often removed.
      .30 cal/7.62 mm rounds, on the other hand will go straight through a chest and blow out a fist-sized chunk as it exits. .50 cal and above can hit an arm or leg and cause hydrostatic shock.
