I can't get over how weird David Wise's music was in the GBA remake. Like in one level you're hearing this majestic underwater piano music that's truly captures the raw beauty of the untamed sea. And then in the next level the music is just a Swiss man going "YODELAY HEE HOO" for 30 seconds which is then followed by 2 minutes of dead silence occasionally broken up by a dog barking.
Rockface Rumble, Nuts & Bolts and Treetop Tumble are absolute jams in the GBA version tho, sure the vibe in treetop doesn't fit the saw levels, but it's still a really good theme! Enchanted Riverbank and Stilt Village are also top tier

And vinegods know he really tried not to be too cranky about it too. Of course it still came out duck-ways when he inevitably flubbed some of the mechanics.

Having an older sibling, I was born into a house already owning the trilogy. Definitely my favorites growing up and 2 and 3 have always been my picks. I actually would rather not play DKC1. Nothign wrong with it, I just find the 2nd and 3rd far more appealing. I really don't get the hatred for this game.

The GBA version does have an additional area and an additional boss. If you want, I suppose an option could be to play through the SNES version, and then download a 100% save file of the GBA version and just play through the new levels. That way, you could check out the GBA version and its soundtrack, while still getting new content and without having to play through the game twice.

Whoa Vinny is finally playing it! Personally I like DKC2 the most but DKC3 is not a bad game at all. It feels more like a more laidback adventure than the previous one (which is fine) and it’s certainly different in some ways but it’s still DKC.
I'll be real I don't get people's issue with this game outside of just disliking kiddy kong on concept. It's personally my favorite in the series, I think the levels are solid and fun and the overworld is the best of the three of them. If this had Diddy instead of Kiddy people would put it on a pedestal.
I've never played this but I'm reminded of a comment about super mario rpg that was like "since the only other main character is a marshmallow child who cries all the time, it's no wonder we want Geno in smash" I think gamers just don't like playing as literal babies, much less gormless ones
Did Vinny unintentionally gaslight himself on the game's SFX with his prior experience with corruptions and their wacky loud noises? Him dropping everything to load up a SNES emulator for comparison was hilarious to me. Btw if there are any hardcore DKC3 fans out there feeling a bit jilted in DKC2's hype-shadow: You are not alone! If you'd like a lengthy video essay about 3's merits, I would highly recommend Transparency's take on it!
I played DKC3 first on Wii as a kid. I have to say playing them all as an adult. DKC3 is better than 1 but worse than 2. I even love a lot of the ost of 3, but DKC1/2 have some of the best osts of all time. What it comes down to is most people are playing a DK game for DK and he’s only playable I. So DKC1 will always have that edge even if I think some of its levels are bullshit.
There's something about this game that makes me think Rare was prototyping Banjo-Kazooie with it, but Nintendo wouldn't have been on board with a new franchise just yet, especially when the SNES was just about to pass the torch on to the N64, so they put the DKC brand on it. And that's what makes it feel "off-brand". I still enjoyed it.
Ive beaten this game a few times over the years and don't remember ever thinking there was something weird about the sound effects. I think the open ended world works just fine in this as well considering what the secrets are in this. In Squeals on Wheels I dont recall ever dying on my descent at the end, but I'm sure that happened because he stopped falling partway and threw the timing off. Overall there aren't as many songs in this that get stuck in my head as the first two and DKC2 is still my favorite, but I think this game is still really fun.
I’d say it’s fair. Ellie has her own skills, but it’s hard to not compare the two since Rambi isn’t in this game. The mouse thing combined with not being able to smash enemies with your face makes her feel not quite as satisfying as Rambi.
I hope Vinny enjoys DKC 3. 1 and 2 are always consistently good, but everytime I play 3 I end up appreciating and enjoying it more and more than the previous playthrough. Edit: Just thought I would add as well; Ive played 1 and 2 since I was bab like, but i bought 3 around 10 years ago
A couple of years ago, my brother somehow got back our childhood SNES(well, I say "our" but he was already an adult back then). I recognized it cause one of the cartridges had a Hot Wheels sticker on the back. I've played this game a ton on emulators and all but for some reason playing it on the original hardware again just hit different. A lot of forgotten memories came back
The reason this game feels light on sound effects is because David Wise composes his music to have baked-in sound effects (especially noticeable in DKC2.) But Eveline Fischer doesn't do that in her compositions, so maybe that's what he's noticing.

Taste is subjective of course, but I never understood why this game gets such a bad rap. Aside from the music not being as iconic, the game has interesting environment and really creative level design. While I can't say I prefer it over DKC2, I feel it is immensely superior to DKC1 as a platformer and if given the choice, I'll always play 3 over the original. Also, I can't fathom why people bitch about the open ended map, it gives a lot of personality and a fulfilling sense of discovery and adventure to the game. To me that game is a ton of fun and I hope Vinny likes it.
During the Arich fight, Childhood me, teen me, and adult me were collectively mentally screaming every time Vinny broke the barrels and shouting for you to camp corners. Can't wait to see you screw up waterfall levels by forgetting all of the Elephant Mechanics. Looking forward to seeing more!

Honestly, while DKC2 is the undisputed masterpiece of the trio, I still love DKC3. I’m probably a bit biased since I grew up with it so probably have some nostalgia towards it. I think the trilogy is very similar to the original Crash games. First game is the hardest and most barebones but still a great game. Second game is absolute peak as they master what they introduced in the first game. Third game adds a few more gimmicks as they try to explore new ideas. Some work, some not so much, but the base gameplay is still great. Also, I actually quite like Kiddy. He can roll bounce on water which is very useful, and he can roll through enemies similar to how Diddy can in DKC2, he’s just a lot clunkier and heavier so it feels like a downgrade when you compare him to Diddy overall. Also, why are some of the chat members so entitled. “Vinny, oh my god please stop pausing, you have to play the game MY way.” Not as bad as the Advance Wars one though.
I played all DKCs for the first time a couple of years ago (so no nostalgia) and I'm genuinely baffled about what Vinny's heard people say? I mean DKC2 is definetly the best one but DKC3 is like, at its very worst, one millimeter behind and that's it.
Same case with Megaman X3 people are mixed on that one, it’s a personal favorite of mine but my only issues are the poor soundtrack and level design it doesn’t live up to X1 and X2.

DKC3 is my second favorite of the trilogy. 1 is my favorite but I played 3 first so the nostalgia is peak for me. They are all really close together anyway though. It's minor things that make me choose one over the others in the end.

1:10:00 On the subject of shit candy not tasting like shit. In the case of banana candy it's a varity of banana that doesn't exist anymore. Because they don't have seeds banana are super vulnerable to disease. For candy cherry specifically they were based off a popular cherry liquor in the late 1800's. Watermelon and stuff was probably based on similar.
DKC3 proves that just because a game that follows a masterpiece isn't AS GOOD, doesn't mean it's not still a great and fun game in its own right. Highly recommend checking out 3 if you haven't yet.
DKC3 is to Donkey Kong what Lodger is to David Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy: hugely outclassed by its predecessors but still pretty decent on its own merits.
never played this game and the first thing I noticed after 5 tries against that spider boss was the two sweetspots on the left and right, you were tired that day I guess to not seeing those.
This is probably my favorite dkc game. At least in the original trilogy as that’s the only ones I’ve played. I love the setting, I love the music, I really like the bosses, I know I already mentioned music but that boss theme, the secrets to find.
There is brilliance to DKC3. The first world does its best effort to distract you from it as hard as possible. Later levels are arguably more impressive than even DKC2 in places. The issue with 3 is that it's better than the sum of its parts and that's just not something fans of 2 usually have to worry about. I still think 3 is a much better game than 1.

Ive beaten this game a few times over the years and don't remember ever thinking there was something weird about the sound effects. I think the open ended world works just fine in this as well considering what the secrets are in this.
In Squeals on Wheels I dont recall ever dying on my descent at the end, but I'm sure that happened because he stopped falling partway and threw the timing off.
Overall there aren't as many songs in this that get stuck in my head as the first two and DKC2 is still my favorite, but I think this game is still really fun.
I don't watch every stream and vod, but it's been a while since I've heard the "He HATES it" meme come back, lol.
Every time Vinny calls Kiddy gormless, it reminds me how people used to call Season 1 Jon Snow from GOT gormless (he really was though).
Vinny saying "Discount Rambi" because he's horrible at using the elephant is really funny
I’d say it’s fair. Ellie has her own skills, but it’s hard to not compare the two since Rambi isn’t in this game. The mouse thing combined with not being able to smash enemies with your face makes her feel not quite as satisfying as Rambi.
@@enlongjones2394 they function very differently. Rambi is basically just near invincibility while Ellie has more mechanical depth.
I hope Vinny enjoys DKC 3. 1 and 2 are always consistently good, but everytime I play 3 I end up appreciating and enjoying it more and more than the previous playthrough.
Edit: Just thought I would add as well; Ive played 1 and 2 since I was bab like, but i bought 3 around 10 years ago

A couple of years ago, my brother somehow got back our childhood SNES(well, I say "our" but he was already an adult back then). I recognized it cause one of the cartridges had a Hot Wheels sticker on the back. I've played this game a ton on emulators and all but for some reason playing it on the original hardware again just hit different. A lot of forgotten memories came back
I fully agree with the chat member about Kiddy Kong's face. That child is absolutely lacking in gorm.
Baby Kong's voice actor also voiced Caillou in the dreaded TV show. It all makes sense now why people hate Baby Kong.

The reason this game feels light on sound effects is because David Wise composes his music to have baked-in sound effects (especially noticeable in DKC2.) But Eveline Fischer doesn't do that in her compositions, so maybe that's what he's noticing.
Nah the SNES genuinely has less SFX than the GBA version. I compared them directly.

But I wasn't comparing the SNES game to the GBA game.

@@nullset2 You don't have to do everything in that game. Did a quick run through the Xbox version, it's way less tedious than even I remember it. Blew past Grunty's factory faster than I expected.

Taste is subjective of course, but I never understood why this game gets such a bad rap. Aside from the music not being as iconic, the game has interesting environment and really creative level design.
While I can't say I prefer it over DKC2, I feel it is immensely superior to DKC1 as a platformer and if given the choice, I'll always play 3 over the original. Also, I can't fathom why people bitch about the open ended map, it gives a lot of personality and a fulfilling sense of discovery and adventure to the game. To me that game is a ton of fun and I hope Vinny likes it.
During the Arich fight, Childhood me, teen me, and adult me were collectively mentally screaming every time Vinny broke the barrels and shouting for you to camp corners. Can't wait to see you screw up waterfall levels by forgetting all of the Elephant Mechanics.

Honestly, while DKC2 is the undisputed masterpiece of the trio, I still love DKC3. I’m probably a bit biased since I grew up with it so probably have some nostalgia towards it. I think the trilogy is very similar to the original Crash games.
First game is the hardest and most barebones but still a great game.
Second game is absolute peak as they master what they introduced in the first game.
Third game adds a few more gimmicks as they try to explore new ideas. Some work, some not so much, but the base gameplay is still great.
Also, I actually quite like Kiddy. He can roll bounce on water which is very useful, and he can roll through enemies similar to how Diddy can in DKC2, he’s just a lot clunkier and heavier so it feels like a downgrade when you compare him to Diddy overall.
Also, why are some of the chat members so entitled. “Vinny, oh my god please stop pausing, you have to play the game MY way.” Not as bad as the Advance Wars one though.

I played all DKCs for the first time a couple of years ago (so no nostalgia) and I'm genuinely baffled about what Vinny's heard people say? I mean DKC2 is definetly the best one but DKC3 is like, at its very worst, one millimeter behind and that's it.

Same case with Megaman X3 people are mixed on that one, it’s a personal favorite of mine but my only issues are the poor soundtrack and level design it doesn’t live up to X1 and X2.

I mean, def not 100%, but he'll likely have enough tokens for 2 or 3 bonus levels.

I know this game like the back of my hand so it's interesting to see someone play it for the very first time. Really excited to see Vinny play this finally!
DKC3 is my second favorite of the trilogy. 1 is my favorite but I played 3 first so the nostalgia is peak for me. They are all really close together anyway though. It's minor things that make me choose one over the others in the end.

As weird as it sounds, I think I have the biggest soft spot for this game out of the SNES trilogy. I just love the graphics and environment the most. I guess I just like Canada? Haha

On the subject of shit candy not tasting like shit. In the case of banana candy it's a varity of banana that doesn't exist anymore. Because they don't have seeds banana are super vulnerable to disease.
For candy cherry specifically they were based off a popular cherry liquor in the late 1800's. Watermelon and stuff was probably based on similar.
DKC3 proves that just because a game that follows a masterpiece isn't AS GOOD, doesn't mean it's not still a great and fun game in its own right. Highly recommend checking out 3 if you haven't yet.
DKC3 is to Donkey Kong what Lodger is to David Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy: hugely outclassed by its predecessors but still pretty decent on its own merits.

This is probably my favorite dkc game. At least in the original trilogy as that’s the only ones I’ve played.
I love the setting, I love the music, I really like the bosses, I know I already mentioned music but that boss theme, the secrets to find.

There is brilliance to DKC3.
The first world does its best effort to distract you from it as hard as possible.
Later levels are arguably more impressive than even DKC2 in places.
The issue with 3 is that it's better than the sum of its parts and that's just not something fans of 2 usually have to worry about.
I still think 3 is a much better game than 1.
