The Romans also had to deal with politics and propaganda and there were man instances where they disengaged when a conquest was too far, too difficult, or rewards were slim. Sometimes setbacks were temporary, but there's a reason the Germanic and Celtic world were bordered by Rhine, because Romans didn't want to venture too far into Germania.
As much as I love military history, I disagree that it is a shame that military history is no longer a popular subject in schools and academies. The evidence is that the U.S. never learns from history, never learns from it's mistakes. The U.S. Department of Defense is once again gearing up to fight WWII.
