    I finished the Count Of Monte Cristo early this year. I took my time with it but it was so wortht. I love it. Regarding the Wheel of Time, I would say that if you don't feel very impress by book one, pick book 2 before dropping the series. The Eye of the World it's more formulaic and it takes a lot of the common tropes of its time so it may feel very Tolkienesque. Book 2 really shows him as an author and how he separates from this formula to write his own thing. Don't feel discouraged if you don't love book 1, I didn't like it that much and here I am at book 10 now.

    Wow your list is a mirror of either my TBR or books I have read and enjoyed. There is nothing on your list that I haven’t either already read or want to read. I’d say about 80% are on my TBR. I’ve been enjoying your channel for about a year now. Usually I agree with your assessment of a book, not always but usually. You’ve pretty much convinced me to join your Patreon and read along. I’ve been thinking about what I will read in 2021. Though I do need to do a small push of 7 books this week to reach my Goodreads goal of 100 books. I may just go along with you as part of my reading this year. Maybe I’m being lazy letting you pick the books, but during the video I kept saying “Yes! I want to read that!” I even had a brief moment of insanity and though I might read the Count of Monte Christo in French, but I haven’t read a book in French since I had a French speaking student about 18 years ago and got him a French edition of The Hobbit so he could follow along with the first book I always read aloud to my students every year of my teaching career. And most of that was before the Peter Jackson films came out. Unfortunately I have not maintained my junior high/high school French since then. Thank you for jump starting my 2021 reading. I’m heading over to Patreon now.

    I found your channel 2 days ago and I’m mesmerized. I’m binge watching, pre-ordered some books at the library and set up a new Amazon wishlist. I’m pretty sure I will have some great time in 2021. English is not my first language too but if you can read thousands of pages, so can I.

    Excited to see people picking up Eye of the World in 2021. Bedtime Bookworm is doing a go-at-your-own-pace read along as well.
    Important to remember it's a marathon not a sprint. 14 book series gives a lot of time to really delve into the characters.
    Also don't Google anything. Not even how to spell names. Autocomplete will spoil things for you. If you do end up liking the series there's an app you can download that sorts information by book so you can look things up without being spoiled.
    Hope you like it, but it's okay if you don't.!

    Regarding Octavia Butler, I haven't read Kindred yet but I started out with Lilith's Brood and LOVED it. I couldn't put it down. It's so so good and I also usually like what you read so I think you would really enjoy it! But I bet Kindred is very good too, I really have to get to it in 2021.

    I'm at 100 pages of A Deadly Education and I feel conflicted about it so far. There are things I like but also some things that I dislike. My main issue is that it tells rather than shows. But I hope you enjoy it more than I am atm. Also the one book I'm definitely reading in 2021 is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.

  • @milililiony
    @milililiony 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Wheel of Time is 14 books + a prequel. The Eye of the World is really the introduction, it's where you're gonna see similarities with LOTR, where the characters and the world are introduced. Just enjoy the journey and maybe you will pick up some of the foreshadowing :) the audiobook can be good if slow pace is an issue for you

    I am planning on rereading Eye of the World this year and I want to continue The Count of Monte Cristo, which are the only two books from your list that I own. I would love to read along with you, but I can't afford Patreon. You have made me add a lot of books to my holds list at my library, a few I had actually started reading, but many I had never heard of. This is a good list and I am excited to get started reading these books as well as catching up on my current library books.

    Oh hell yes! So many of these are on my TBR so I’m excited to read them along with you. I need to read Kindred. I actually just finished Parable of the Sower last night and it’s my favorite book of the year. I vote for The Eye of the World for January for selfish reasons! Lol there’s another booktuber doing a readalong in January so it would be sweet to knock out 2 for 1.

  • @ham5097
    @ham5097 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, I just wanted to warn you about 2 books you are planning on reading.
    1/ Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie is a very VERY character driven book. There is not really a plot tbh. I personally love that stuff, but I also know you are more of a plot reader. So I just wanted to warn you in advance so you aren't too surprised and disappointed. I still recommend you the series and don't worry, Abercrombie focuses on plot of his books after the first one much more.
    2/ Then there is the Eye of the World. Robert Jordan was very inspired by Tolkien. And I mean very inspired. The first half of the book is kinda like Fellowship of the Ring. But Jordan then made the series his own thing and he has some of the most interesting world building, his strong suit was the cultures. But just keep that in mind.

    I gasped out loud when that book came out of the packet damaged haha. I also laughed when you held up the Count of Monte Cristo. Girl, you need to read that book 😂😂
    So many of these are on my list too. I'm excited to see what you think of the Liveship Traders trilogy, I think it's great. I've only read the first Farseer book so I might go back and finish the trilogy, and then continue on with the Rain Wilds series. I think you can start with Kindred for Octavia E. Butler, I did. I've only read that one and the short story Bloodchild (really weird), but I don't think it's too challenging or anything.
    Good luck with all these books!

  • @varnyu
    @varnyu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Foundation trilogy is the one that opened the door for me and got me into the whole scifi genre. 😁 It blew my mind. It starts a bit dry but totally worth it.
    This year I have read Dawn by Octavia E. Butler and again, mind=blown. It’s the first book of the Lilith’s Broos trilogy, there’s some first contact with aliens, but it is not the main topic of the books.
    After finishing the trilogy, I have to say, that Dawn is my favorite of the three books, however I like the other two as well. Butler doesn’t see anything only in black&white. Whenever you read about a moral lesson or wisdom you kinda agree with, you can be sure that she fooled you and she will destroy it in front of your very eyes in the next book. Love her

    Advice for Wheel of Time - the first 2 or 3 books is classic fantasy and then the rest helped usher in modern fantasy. Just remember Eye of the World was published when only Tolkien style was getting published. The author starts there and then majorly diverges from those tropes.

    There is also a graphic novel of Kindred that’s not bad. If you want to just get an idea of the story, you could read that first in a short time

    The little squeal when you looked at how big the book was. 😆 Bets of luck with these, and happy new year!

    Hope you have a better time with Brave New World than I did. Like you I had read 1984 and Fahrenheit so I figured I would read this one and I had lots of issues. I really love the first book in the Foundation trilogy though!

    Yes lets read eye of the world together I’ve been wanting to start it but I’m scared lol. Also the thing about Wise Man’s Fear is that one more book would not do the series any justice. There are SO MANY things left to be further expanded and one book is just simply not enough. I believe that’s why Patrick has been struggling with it.

    I'm eager to see how you like Children of God! I picked up The Sparrow this year mainly from your recommendation and while it was intense, it was SO well done and has stayed with me (and the Aricebo radio tower this month 😔)

    Personally I'd recommend you start with Lilith's Brood series by Octavia E Butler it's a first contact with aliens and much more sci-fi than Kindred. Although Kindred is a great book! And I think her most popular one

    Please go on with the red rising saga! It gets so much better after the first book, and Dark Age (the last that came out) is one of the most epic sci fi books ever written 😭😭

    I'm not a huge adult fantasy reader, and for the book club for me personally I'd prefer standalones? At least a few so it doesn't feel like such a commitment

    lots of books on this list that i want to read as well. A brave new world, its one of the few classics i truly love, its not without flaws but as i scientist in formation i tend to always think about that book whenever i read scientifict papers with experiments that can be ethically cuestionable, it also has one of my favourite quotes so i hope you like it. By the way, i want to thank you fo recomending "to be taught, if fortunate", i´ve been struggling a lot with the project that i have to do in order to get my masters degree, to the point where i was thinking of quitting, and reading that book reminded me of how much i love science and why i do it, gave me lots of motivation, so thank you.

    Ohhh, The Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favorite books of all time! Over the years, I’ve probably read like 3 times already but it’s a bit different experience every time. It’s not an easy read but if you liked The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, I think you might like this one too.

    Eye of the World is a bit tropey so try not to judge the series by its first book. I very much enjoyed it, however a friend of mine who's a big Tolkien fan had some issues with it but loved the books that came after.

    Probably commenting too late to get noticed, but have you ever considered starting the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett? I don't read much fantasy but I keep getting drawn to that since there are so many books and you will see people with TONS of Terry Pratchett books on their shelves...
