Laurence Fox slams Jewish actress Maureen Lipman for criticising Dame Helen Mirren over Jewish role

  • Dame Maureen Lipman has criticised the decision to cast Dame Helen Mirren as the former Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in the film Golda because she is not Jewish.
In the latest row over the casting of non-Jews in Jewish roles - a practice described by critics as “Jewface” - Lipman said that she was uncomfortable with Mirren being given the film’s titular role.
Political activist and actor Laurence Fox says "it's an actor's job is to act, so it doesn't matter their background is. Wokeness is overtaking everything, even drama which is used to escape reality."

Maureen Lipman made a name for herself donkey's years ago playing Joyce Grenfell on stage. Grenfell was an upper class English lady who had attended the poshest schools and during WWII she travelled widely entertaining the troops. Did Lipman share any of that experience?

Was Joyce Grenfell Jewish? No she was a Christian, so perhaps Ms Lipman shouldn't be so quick to condemn Helen Mirren for playing a Jewish character. After all, ACTING is portraying someone you aren't!

I am Jewish my wife is Irish. My mother in law is a well known Irish Actress who resurrected a Martin Sherman play ""Rose"" the story of a Holocaust survivor. She toured single handed with this play for 10 years all over Ireland the UK South Africa and Australia. This was no mean feat for a Lady in her 70''s. She discovered that Maureen Lipman was going to p lay this role and thought it would be nice to send her her notes and wish her best wishes with her performance. She did not even have the courtesy to write back and thank her. After hearing this I hope that the fact that she was not Jewish was not a factor. She played to many Jewish audiences in small theatres and all her feed back was one of delight and thanks for such a sensitive portrayal of the character.

Maybe that’s why there’s so many Israel haters there in Ireland.. lol

It’s called acting, it is literally pretending to be something or someone you are not. It is something that has been round for thousands of years. The concept of having to be the the exact identity of the character you are playing is preposterous. Only gay actors can play gay roles, only Jewish actors to play Jewish roles, how are they ever supposed to make fantasy movies, there are no such things as elves or orcs so I’m not sure how they’re going to make any more Lord of the Rings movies, and I can’t imagine where they’re going to find a real xenomorphs to make and future Alien movies.

But the point is, that it works both ways. Would a white actor play Nelson Mandela? No, because that would be insulting to his family and country.
Historical productions need to look as real as possible. Would it be sensible to have a black lady in the role of our Queen? She's white end of. Common sense should prevail when casting. Crap like James Bond can have anybody in the role because it's sheer fantasy.

A black Anne Boleyn for example is just a bizarre muddling of history if your producing a film about that historic period, it prevents the full immersion of the viewer & leans more towards a fantasy genre.

Apart from Ann Boleyn, we've had a black Achilles and a black Mrs Cratchitt as well as a myriad of black actors and actresses in period dramas playing parts where black individuals could never have been in Britain, let alone anything else. It is getting worse with black actors now appearing as shop keepers, local aristocracy and Police in the 1950s (and earlier) when this was a rarity (for shopkeepers) and non-existent for the other professions. Problem is that "diversity/Gay Lobby" etc. want it every which way but loose.

Unless I'm wrong, isn't an actor's job to take on a role regardless of what that role is that's the whole point of acting surely. If it's coming to the point where people cannot do their job and act out a character, then the film and movie industry needs to close down or, the actors who won't act in certain roles or who have apologised for roles taken previously, need to get a new job.

It would be fine if a Black person plays a White or White plays Black character if the make up looks like the character. What next, a Black Queen of England or a White Martin Luther King? Maybe a White Gandhi or a Chinese JFK. Absolutely ridiculous. Society has seriously lost the plot.

Ingrid Bergman played Golda Meir in the film "A woman called Golda" that was in 1982, I can't remember anyone making a fuss then. Yes, acting is acting, you don't have to have been a priest to play a priest, an-ex doctor to play a doctor, etc... etc.. However, where I do draw the line is not respecting the ethnicity of a historical character, and would find it extremely indelicate for a white actor to play the role of Nelson Mandela or Martin Luther King. And why I did not buy into a fictional mini series about Anne Boleyn being played by a black actress. I know that Laurence Olivier played Othello way back in the 60s and he blackened his face because in Shakespeare's play Othello, Othello is a military commander of Moorish race, therefore not white-skinned. So what would be the point of Othello being played by a white actor who does nothing to change his physical appearance? Today, there are so many excellent Black actors out there who would do a fantastic Othello, and at least their skin colour would be right.
