I had the exact same thought, along with "why haven't we heard of him before?" Just heard Folk Suite no. 2 on the radio (wqxr)-- he's wonderful.

Check out Florence Price, Ulysses Kay, George Walker, William Dawson, Undine Smith Moore. That's a good start. These alone add up to a major black heritage in classical music. Happy listening.

There is so much to discover!
For me it´s a marvellous adventure to jump into the universe of African-American classical music ....specifically laying open the connections between Grant and some famous protagonists of the Harlem Renaissance (something that I will later present in a lecture in early 2025, in a cultural center near Frankfurt, in the small city of Eschborn...).

@@MichaelHeinz4 That is all very interesting. Will there be concerts around your lecture?

Just got to this one in my ongoing tour of your prior uploads. Never heard it before, but it certainly has Still's hallmarks. A wonderful piece that, like much of his music, should be heard with greater regularity. Thanks much.

Haunting and powerful. Thanks for posting, it's a puzzle to me that Still's music is not played more often.

Further my earlier comment, for whatever it is worth, rightly or wrongly, while Archaic Ritual has very attractive, appealing atmospherics, it also reminds me of many other sounds of the period, not least of which is Hadley? Thanks again for what to me is a new and interesting composer.

@CurzonRoad I say go where the music takes you! Thanks for listening.

I am really glad to hear this again as I was at the performance in Flagstaff and watched John conduct this with an assembled orchestra that had a fast learning curve to achieve what they did in such a short time. Listening to this again underlines the value of this work in my mind. When will a good commercial recording become available? It is a work of great quality an, like much of Still's work, unjustly neglected. I do not agree with the Hadley observation.

a lot of "classical" music written by Blacks, women, and other current Entitlement Groups has been and is being recorded simply because it was written by...a member of an EG. Not this. Still is a genuine Master of Music. See also George Walker's first two piano sonatas, which are available on CRI
