삶, 절박함 아직 희망은 있고 모두 사람이었으니 -1집 앨범 수록곡 ‘옛 일기장’ 중
블루스 음악의 뿌리는 흑인 노예들이 절망과 희망을 노래에 녹여내던 18세기 목화농장으로 거슬러 올라간다. 블루스의 슬픈 역사만큼이나 치열하고 지난하게 음악을 해온 블루스 뮤지션이 여기 있다. 바로 강허달림. 그녀는 가난한 소작농의 육남매 중 막내로 태어나, 일찍이 대학 진학을 포기하고 상고를 졸업한 뒤 음악을 하기 위해 상경, 청소부부터 접시닦이까지 닥치는 대로 아르바이트를 하며 생계와 음악 공부를 병행한다. 그렇게 음악만을 향해 달려가던 그녀에게 기회가 찾아온다. 故김현식, 한영애, 이은미, 정경화 등 당대의 보컬리스트들을 배출한 우리나라 대표 블루스-록 밴드 ‘신촌블루스’의 보컬리스트로 발탁된 것. 더불어 한국 최고의 블루스 기타리스트 중 한 명으로 꼽히는 故채수영이 이끄는 ‘저스트 블루스’를 두루 거치며 그녀는 블루스 뮤지션으로 입지를 다진다.

블루스가 가진 한(恨)과 농밀한 감정표현을 능수능란하게 구사하는 강허달림의 보컬은 그녀에게 블루스 디바라는 수식어를 안겨준다. 2005년 솔로로 발표한 첫 싱글 앨범 「독백」을 통해 블루스 마니아층에 어필했고, 첫 정규 앨범 「기다림, 설레임」(2008)은 평단을 사로잡으며 ‘제6회 한국대중음악상’ 록 부문 올해의 음반/올해의 노래에 노미네이트된다. 1집이 막막한 삶과 사랑의 아픔을 절절한 보이스와 특유의 리듬감으로 노래하며 강허달림의 색깔을 드러낸 앨범이라면, 2집 앨범 「넌 나의 바다」(2012)는 다양한 장르의 노래를 자기 스타일로 해석해 보컬리스트로서의 가능성을 제시한 앨범이다. 노랫말 곳곳에서 풍기는 사람과 관계에 대한 그녀의 따뜻한 시선과 여유로워진 자세, 블루스를 넘어 편안하고 익숙한 팝의 영역을 아우르는 다채로움으로 대중과의 소통을 시도한다. 그 가운데 특유의 절규하지 않아도 귀에 꽂히며 잔잔하지만 여운을 남기는 강허달림의 블루지한 목소리는 블루스란 ‘기교’가 아닌 ‘정서’라는 점을 시사한다.

3년 만에 신작으로 리메이크 앨범 「Beyond the Blues」(2015)를 내놓은 강허달림. 여느 리메이크 앨범과 달리 그녀의 작품이 호평을 받는 것은 숨겨진 명곡들을 찾아내 자신만의 방식으로 생명을 부여했기 때문이다. 송창식/최백호/이정선/김두수 등 잘 알려진 거장들의 곡에 새로운 옷을 입혔고, 故채수영의 ‘이젠 한마디 해볼까’, 윤명운의 ‘어떤 하루’ 등 잘 알려지지 않았던 블루스 곡을 끄집어내 재해석했다. 때로는 소녀 같은 맑은 울림으로, 혹은 깊은 한을 삭이는 듯한 탁성으로 삶의 희극과 비극을 노래한다. 선배들의 삶이 서려있는 가사에 자신의 인생을 투영해 곱씹되 애써 멋 내지 않은 채 뱉어내는 그녀의 노래를 통해 절망과 희망, 고통과 환희가 교차한다. 그리고 그 사이 어디쯤의 여백에서 비로소 나의 곁에 누군가들의 안녕을 돌아보게 된다. 블루스 음악, 뮤지션과 나, 서로가 끈끈하게 엉겨드는 강허달림의 공연에 여러분을 초대한다.
