    There are 2 versions of this obscure classic. There exists the 138-minute original version as edited by Ken Russell. Then there is the 109-minute edited version as edited by the studio that was released commercially in 1971. The 1987 re-release by M-G-M/United Artists Classics restored the 26 minutes that had been trimmed for the original theatrical release from director Russell's initial 138-minute cut. This longer version includes two songs, "It's Nicer in Nice" and "The You-Don't-Want-To-Play-With-Me Blues", as well as the seven-minute Grecian bacchanal party fantasy.

    russell said it would be one of the greatest musicals of all time, and it was (regardless of who agrees).

    Could you find something more Kitsch than 'The Boyfriend', a Ken Russell movie?
    Wonderful, Lovely, Delicious!

    One of Ken's very best, brilliant and endearing. So glad it was restored. Amazing orchestrations (Richard Rodney Bennett).

    Un des films les plus fascinants sui soient.
    Miraculeux , hors normes , insaisissable....Un traite du reve bien plus troublant que tous les Matrix et Inception du monde.....

    I'd love to see this. All the clips I've seen have a slightly deranged energy, as you might expect of a musical made by the same guy who directed "the devils"

      I've noticed that before, too ... it's Antonia Ellis and she's one of the leads ... she's plays Maisie opposite Tommy Tune - they have some very competitive, physical dance routines so it's not surprising she got a little roughed up during the shooting

    It's too bad the fantasy orchestra starts out sounding so terrible. (The most common criticism of this delightful, underrated movie is that there's not enough stylistic difference between the fantasy sequences and the actual show.) The overrated "Chicago" movie not only ripped off this movie's concept (the musical numbers happening in the characters' heads) but even the living radiator cap at the end of this number.

    • @BernardProfitendieu
      @BernardProfitendieu 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      hunny, this movie didn't invent the dream musical sequence ... your comment about the orchestra sounded terrible is clueless, too
