Lenovo's (specifically the non-IBM carryovers. Like the yogas not so much the ThinkPads.) are the number one PC that the 3 repair shops I go to see most frequently. Worse than Apple.
Genuinely kinda surprising that they've kept the thinkpad brand up as much as they have considering their other products. I mean, modern thinkpads certainly aren't as good as the x60 or x200 anymore, but they're still pretty good.
I know that you don't like fanboys, but I would like to compliment you for this video and your channel in general. No bs, tons of knowledge, straight to the point. Just awesome. P.s. it is pretty relaxing to see you solder these boards.
I am not at all interested in the "exact" work you do. Apple makes horrible products with detestable business practices, I would never buy their garbage. But, the calm, reasoned, logical way you go about fixing things is some of the greatest content on the Internet as a whole. We need more people who know how to think like you. Thank you for these videos!
Awesome work - this is amazing to watch, check Louis's eyes and the focus on the task..its like watching the terminator when he is hunting his target - full speed ahead with no messin!
Another short & to the point video on power failure type problems. Nice work Louis. 👍 I’m the Retired Repair Tech that is getting update lessons from you on the tools & techniques used with modern surface mount components. Eg. I had to work without schematics on many repairs 😀 Cheers Trevor in Perth West Australia
You are clearly quite practiced at that surface-mount shit. I hate working on that stuff, because I always screw it up. Although, to be fair, if I had the tools you have, I might be better at it. You have some very sweet tools there!
As someone who has just gotten into IT/Electronics Repair shop here in OC SoCal and specializes in Windows PCs despite the shop being primarily an Apple device repair shop (Meaning I'm the go to tech for windows/linux desktop, laptop, and tablet repair. I do still have some responsibilities to learn how to repair Mac devices such as Ipads, Macbooks, Apple Watches, and/or iPhones and holy hell Apple uses to much unneeded adhesive for their devices and it always damages some other component if the device isn't removed properly. And why does apple use like 100 tiny bolts/nuts/screws for their macbook keyboards chassis. Meanwhile replacing the keyboard on a Lenovo Y520 is extremely simple and doesn't require like 100 screws for a single component.
I've been enjoying watching channel for a few weeks. I enjoy seeing your troubleshooting as well as listening to the range of topics you discuss. I dont own Apple Products and I dont repair Apple products. Basically, I dont touch Apple products. I have a question for you regarding your inventory. Im curious to know if you are able to readily purchase and stock new SMT components or if the main source of your repair parts come from donor boards. I am also curious to know what type of SMT parts you see fail the most. Thanks in advance, Keep up the very good, impressive work.
While this short video was great at getting to the point and really focusing on the nitty gritty, I do miss your off-topic banter from the longer videos. It's part of your channel's charm for me. :]
randy scott Plugin in the charger when coming back from the party, so the laptop can recharge while you sleep off the booze or enjoy your latest romantic encounter. Anyway the same shaky plugging mistake can happen from excess coffee.
Hey Louis so I have a 2011 MacBook Pro that slows down unless connected to a charger and yesterday it doesn’t turn on or chime. Do you have a video I can watch to learn how to fix it.
I have a nicely done non-Apple replacement battery in a 2007 MacBook. It charges alright, but the charge indicator is wrong, the Coconut Battery app shows crazy maximum capacity values like 33.172 mAh. There's also no low-battery warning and the MacBook just shuts down hard. Sometimes after calibrating the battery and resetting the SMC, it works fine for an hour or so, only to fall back into the same problem again. I'm guessing there is nothing I can do to correct that battery behavior, or is there something?
Hey Loui, speaking of charging, I could use some of your expertise on what is with all this "fast charging" hype? I think that it doesn't really exist and that they just make the device id the cable and if it is not original it just charges slow on purpose. What do you think?
The fast charge cables push more voltage and amperage with communication with the phone to know when the battery can handle the increase in voltage and amperage, to ensure it doesn't explode. It also only works within certain percentages. If your phone only fast charges up to 75%, take a fast charge cable, time how long it takes to go from 75% to 100, then compare that to a non-fast charge cable, and it should be really similar.
ebrahim alfardan Derating the charging current because of cable manufacturer is a different issue to fast charging. Yes, fast charging is a thing. Yes, you can fast charge with cheap Chinese cables. All of my $2-8 cables fast charge my phone. The circuitry just needs to know that the wires are up to the task of charging at a higher voltage/current. Since chargers use CC/CV circuitry, the voltage is what makes it a fast charger, not so much the current. The charger will charge at a Constant Current/Variable Voltage up until it's almost full. (Say 3A/10V.) And the voltage will drop until it reaches a state where the charger switches to constant voltage, and will drop the current while keeping the voltage steady. You can charge as fast as the wires will allow. (For the most part. The battery can take way more current them kids being supplied.) If you buy a shitty Chinese cable with 32 ga. wires, it won't charge as fast as a good cable with 22 ga. wires.
Andrew Delashaw And sometimes some kind of ID mechanism is needed to detect if the cable maker claims the cable is up to the higher load, though this has no reason to be proprietary, it just needs to check that the vendor is deliberately saying it's not an older weaker product. For example on a non-apple USB "charger" shorting the middle two pins instead of not is the official way to signal a 1A versus an older 0.5A port, and the USB standards now has similar official methods up to more than 60W. Some of those require the extra wiring in USB3 cables, to avoid perfectly legit USB 1.1 cables catching fire.
This morning @ the 'Genius Bar', at an upstate location (way upstate), I was informed Apple couldn't put a new drive in what they termed "my legacy machine"-a 2011 MacDaddy 15 inch. I retorted " So Apple is telling me to go to Rossman?" not expecting them to get it but, they all busted out with stifled laughs and nods while my guy gave me a fist bump. Apparently you have quite a following with the rank and file.
Wasn't there supposed to be some more components on the board? Say... at 1:29 , four componnents to the left from C6990 ? Two places vacant, one of the size of the capacitor, and one smaller, below.
Hey Louis, I just really wanted to thank you for taking the time and sharing all of your knowledge in videos so we all can learn to fix Apple products. I repair motherboards and phones but I used to say "fuck Apple, I'll never work on their shit" Thanks to you, I can start making more money so I can buy some nicer tools and start a business. I REALLY enjoy your videos and you do an excellent job explaining step by step how to service Apple's products. I honestly want to share my gratitude for all of your hard work and effort doing this, and I appreciate it more than words can express. Thank you Louis!!!!! Keep up the amazing work! You may not think so, but you are a great person with a good heart and have an excellent set of morals that have really inspired me to do better.
No, they have a bunch of failing motherboards and are pretty terrible as well. Any company that suggests that you belong to a cult is not a company I would spend money with
The good old teaching/guide videos. The first reason why i joined. It's good to do a jump back on old memories And remember how needlessly stupid and complex apple one wire circuit is compared to any other fucking laptop
Mr. Louis, im commenting for a sorta tech question I bought an international friend a $600 laptop, for school and because whenever we tried to play games they would get constant blue screens. They are from Philippines, which i guess would be considered a 3rd world country? either way i tried to send an import of a win7 laptop twice, would never work out in shipping even though everything would point to proper trasnport. So i was left with the option of buying them a laptop from a local store by sending money which was a tough move on me. But they managed to buy a 7th gen intel Vivobook win10 laptop. it freezes, it hangs, it crashed once in the first week but hasnt for a month. Ive tried my best to find solutions remotely, but usually everything i can find software wise is related to win10. It seems win10 is notorious for all the problems weve experienced My question to you i guess would be, at what point is win10 just being a really bad, buggy and slow OS and at what point is it not the OS's fault but a bad faulty machine.
Serious respect! That repair shows the level of artistry and expertise you have. I wish your shop was as close as the useless Apple repair place near me. You won't consider moving to China will you? If you want to be taken seriously in business over here you *must* use Apple unfortunately...
I run a teaching business - tutoring for middle / high school students. All of the teachers here are instructed to use Apple because Apple products are so much bett---HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA... No. Seriously the way it works in China is that Apple is considered an ultra premium brand, like driving a Mercedes. So if you want to show wealth and success you have to use the latest and greatest. You wouldn't hire a stock broker who drives a Volvo and its the same mentality here. Example: the second the "gold" colored MacBook 12 came out we bought them because it showed that we were all successful. The fathers of the kids didn't care but the mothers do and they control the purse strings. They all "oh and ah" over the latest Iphone this and Mac Pro that and coo when they see that everyone sports the latest and greatest. Everything has to be in the latest exclusive color too of course. Before we had this policy I remember dressing to the 9's during a sales meeting, unveiling a Thinkpad and watching a parent wrinkle her nose at the sight (yes it was clean and new). That was 150,000 RMB ($24,000) walking out the door. Its impossible to know how often this episode repeated itself but our conversion rates are much better now. That specific example has not repeated itself since but myself and all my staff now must lead double lives - 2 phones - one for show and one for use - two computers, same story. Its depressing we still have to shovel money down Apple's maw but over here its a cost of doing business and we all jokingly refer to it as the "Apple tax".
Im just wondering how do they make it so that the quality is so shitty. I have an old netbook. Probable 6-7 years old and it even fell on the stairs and it still works and charges and didnt get randomly corroded. (last time i cleaned it i didnt notice anything off) And on top of everything its a no name chinese brand. It was litterally the cheapest thing that could run windows and had a display
Well I’ve been clumsy too with my macbooks over the years, and they still worked fine. They’ve been very durable in my experience, and a lot of apple customers have also had good experience with them to other brands, that’s part of the reason why they have been successful, despite the shitty practices. They are overpriced though.
Apple's deception to label a Mac a PC is ridiculous. If a Mac can run Windows, wouldn't that make it a PC regardless of whether a repair is initiated on the main board?
5:09 - God dammit, I hate when you solder on a new chip and new capacitors and the computer uninstalls Mac OS and installs Windows. I also hate when Apple has lobbyists tell the most ridiculous shit imaginable to lawmakers who aren't tech savvy enough to realize how much bullshit it is.

But did we get fan spin?
The Rossmann version of "Can it run Crysis"
Benjamin Hale you mean the apple* version
Well it's about apple but I seriously doubt they would want to be associated with their products having serious flaws and failures.
Doing it again ... turning a mac into a PC ... my gosh this is unbearable to watch !
An expeditious and efficient editing. Do not waste time with banalities, it's more efficient. Great video.
Really like this format, thank you for taking the time to edit it!
Ooh this
Is great can I send you my Mac too fix this exact problem on my MacBook because I don’t have the tools that you have.
I'm digging the jump cut style. Awesome vid.
Nevermind I changed my vote to the jumpcuts. It's outstanding editing.
2 points on the AG joke...

bloosh100 it's the laptop, not the os. Windows 10 is smooth af on my Xps 13 8th gen
