It was about a twenty-six year old man who was becoming the boss of a man half his age. I was twenty when it came out. The audience was built around teenagers, and they hated it. My friends and I were the same age. We loved it so much. Check out that movie as well. It is amazing.

This is one of the greatest travel movies ever. Until you go abroad, you never fully understand this culture. Bob and Charlotte never even introduce themselves to each other. That's what makes traveling so exhilarating. You meet these strangers and the next day you're exploring the city together and opening up about intimate feelings and aspects of your life that you can't even share with your closest friends and family. You develop such a close bond with this person and yet you know that when the trip is over, chances are you will never see each other again. It's truly indescribable. But I think that's part of the addiction to travel. It's not just seeing places and having these activities. It's the people that you meet The people who make you feel comfortable and give you that space to self-reflect.

I lived in Japan for a while. I've walked among most of the places featured in this film. I first watched this movie years before moving to Japan while hopped up on medications after having my wisdom teeth taken out. For those who have seen this movie, and felt the effects of percocet, you could maybe begin to imagine the combined effects. I can't remember for sure, but I think I may have cried while watching this movie that first time without any good reason. I know I felt like it. Now, after having lived in a Japan and being strangely distanced from that experience by time, yet missing it intensely, this movie still makes me cry, but for very different reasons. For those who have not lived in Japan, this film may have a difficult narrative and tone to follow, but for those who have, it is so spot on that it evokes gut-wrenchingly authentic reactions. @@paperboxes I never thought the portrayals were problematic at all, but I can see why people feel that way. To me, the characters are treated with warmth. I met a lot of people who were very similar to many characters in the film when I was in Japan. I think they are the type of people that visitors to Tokyo come across early in their stays, especially if they don't speak Japanese. Of course the crazier characters stand out, but there were also more normal people in the movie, like the old ladies doing ikebana and the mellow people at the party.

I think this movie is a bit more specific than just a "living abroad in Japan" setting, it's specifically about Tokyo, the metropolis, the urban ocean and being an outsider inside it. I have been studying in Sapporo, up north in Hokkaido, and while it's not a small town (2 million residents), the sea and the mountains are near, the people are open and lovely, and the culture is caring in that northern way I recognize from my home country of Finland. Although, I had enough of a grasp of Japanese to carry out daily conversations and talk with locals, which has made my life here much easier to adjust to. Were I only able to speak English, it would probably feel a lot more like Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson.

it is sort of surreal the journey the film takes me on. i saw it when it came out and i was just entering my 30s, i had spent like the last 15 years of my life going out to clubs and concerts and parties and trying to gall in love and i could so totally relate to the loneliness and isolation she was feeling in that completely foreign world.
i just watched it again but now i am 51 and totally understand can relate to being on the other side. there is this young beautiful women and she is attractive, but some sort of fatherly side comes out in you. you want to help her you want her to be happy, you dont want to be a corruption, you dont want to damage her. you have been through these things yourself and and you have hurt others and others have hurt you, you dont want to be responsible for that and you just want to protect her. you want to be able to tell her the things she needs to hear to give her the great intangible advice she needs, the advice no one had for you. and it is all just a moment in time that can never last or be reproduced. its one of those fleeting experiences you remember for ever and always look back on and hope they are still out there somewhere and that they are happy, and that gives you some amount of comfort in your own otherwise unhappiness.

This movie gave me a sense of HOPE. Way back then. It made me feel hopeful that maybe it wasn't just me that didn't fit in where i was living- of course i always wanted to run off with an older man just like bill murray-smart, funny- wiser than me.
I know this feeling of isolation the movie displays, far too well. And no one can understand what it does to the psyche to be trapped in a place for entire lifetimes where no matter what i do people really do not like me- at the grocery store an angry older woman decked head to toe in college gear literally grabbed a grocery cart and physically hit me very hard with it. She hurt me. I almost fell down. I was just trying to buy food-you know for survival-food to eat. She did it to me on purpose. I have had surgeries-multiple serious surgeries and that woman rammed me exactly where one of my tumors had been. This is what they do to me where i live-on purpose. It's not the first time. They have no shame in their cruelty. What's ridiculous is that I too went to that same University. I went there for a very long time. Diligently. For many years I survived on $1 a day. Eating a carton of white rice so delicious and filling. Sometimes I ate my white rice in the women's lounge-doing my homework-where unbeknownst to me I guess I was being "monitored"-that means spied on. And for much of my life I have been treated like a Prisoner-all while trying to simply have a life. So these people with their head to toe gear and their false ideas that I must hate the University and I have to literally be physically assaulted-reminded-just how much they hate me-well, they have done their damage. Especially the spitting and grotesque refusal to simply wear a MASK. The spitting is truly stomach turning. Back then there was still a chance though-that I could meet a smarter man-a man who knew how to take control. Protect me from these crazed people. Now-there is me and my Lhasa. My Golden Bear. And he reminds me of this movie-he reminds me we may be alone and ostracized, but we have laughter still. I dreamt of this movie last night. I was in a different country and this very sweet Japanese woman was handing me back a bunch of my mom's gemstones. With both her hands. They had fallen and she handed them to me-it made me cry because her gesture of kindness is such a foreign feeling to me now. Kindness. Caring. Gentleness. The Soundtrack to this movie was playing in my dream. And maybe I had gotten away with a guy like Bill Murray. At least for a moment, life was far better. And I wasn't being assaulted and spit at. Or called names.

It seems like you ran into a bunch of horrible narcissists. That's terrible, what the psychos did to you. You deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. That is probably what your dream of the Japanese woman handing you your mom's gemstones was trying to convey to you. I've been in similar situations myself. Maybe Lost In Translation was made for people like us with sensitive hearts, and who appreciate real beauty, as portrayed in this film. God bless you. :)

Yasmin I hear you..."you are protected " you need no protection of no man...This is a man's world...and you have a beutifull light seen by very low vibration people who will hate you for be " a being of light" in a temporary physical form. This energy makes you shine in the dark and therefore be seen. Raise your heard high they may break your body but will never touch your soul. If you look for male's protection you will only get heart broken. I have not watched the movie but from this trailer I can see a young woman, who could be his daughter perpetuating the " idea that women needs man protection " a lost child that actually in reality will only find exploitation. We all need to be safe and protected from warm and abuse...This world started the transition towards humam enlightenment but the battle has not yet began...you are strong trhu gentleness and kindness be yourself beautiful being... ❤️

This movie hits a very emotional spot for me. Took a tour around Perú with my brother after graduating from college, and the group we were in with the youngest bedsides us was around 40 years old... we initially thought it would be boring...
But oh my, as a 24 year old around these sweet, pure, and adventurous souls made me extremely happy and at peace, there was a connection that I never expected
The day we had to part ways, I broke down crying, I just didn't want to leave them, I spent all night crying, not knowing what to make of it....
But I believe I have made friends for eternity, wherever they are, I hope they keep being that cheerful, warm, and lively group ❤
    Hasta la vista baby 😢

Bill Murray is just perfect in this movie. how he conveys the feeling and idea of what men is going through is just genius. Scarlet Johanson is good also. but Murray gets 10/10 here. i mean, his face expressions - face may look calm, but when you look deeper.. you get it. i just hope i never get in situation like this, knowing he didint do anything shameless here, but just to have this feeling, im afraid.
