  • It's super hot and there appears to be no real relief from the heat unlike super wet last year. But I am super stoked about the gradual progress I am making on my "Big House" and the work has to go on.

    Ok you asked for it. the consistency of the mortar is fine. Water after it has set will make the concrete harder. Just one little tap of that loaded trowel and the mortar will stick to it pretty much even upside down. Makes it easier to spread on a vertical surface. that is why you see masons tapping their trowels all the time. Your waterfall is a thing of beauty, and the birds love it. It brings birds to a bird watcher. I am surprised at the variety. I think it is a true success.

    Later in your build, you might use plaster of paris in your new house. Its much lighter than concrete and can be chiseled and shaped. Plaster has outstanding water stopping qualities and will outlast anything around you. The Egyptians used plaster and some of their work is still in use. A local architect insists plaster of paris is lime plaster, so shop for it under both names. Your rough concrete would have turned better looking all by itself. I'd like to know if plaster is affordable, locally. Az or New Mexico is where i hope to move to.

    You are truly a gift to Mother Nature with your husbandry of the dwellers who share your spot of land. Pollinators, birds of all kinds, and who knows what lurks around the fountain in the wee hours of the night and early morning all appreciating your gift of life. I spent k-5 grades out there in the SW (Boulder City, NV) and, as a kid, the heat never phased me in the least. I revisited my old stomping grounds when I turned 70 (nine years ago) and the heat damned near knocked me to the ground! I used to run barefoot over asphalt roads where the repair spots were constantly melted and it was "hohum". When I visited there in 2014 I simply stuck to the road! Your stamina amazes me! Keep it up---this Old Timer really enjoys your endeavors and stick-to-it attitude. Thanks!

    I liked how you showed how easily the forms release without using a releasing agent in the desert. Most contractors would state that as an impossibility but they just don't experience moisture meter reads at 15 percent. You are making tremendous progress in the heat. Thankyou for hydrating the birds too! Your selection of music to accompany the birds at the water fall/pond is really soothing in this heat. Don't forget to take a dip now and then yourself! Awesome job!

      Joseph I get most of my water from rainwater harvesting my 200sq ft roof. I do have about 3 shipments of water per year to add to that. 1600 gallons each time @ $250.00 ea. Hope that helps.

    " I'm cry-y-y-ing, over you." cause I don't have any tips so, I decided to level out a bit of praise that might just hold you together , body and soul. "The Living Desert " was this Disney film that I saw as a kid that showed you all sorts of creatures that survive in the desert but such an array of birds, living and surviving under such conditions where you are living, is eye opening.

    When putting mortar on your foundation have a flat wide mortar trowel on your other second hand to catch the excess mortar when applying it. But, we are looking good on this build otherwise. Also, try to get a mortar pan with wheels so your back won't go out pulling that heavy weight. Or in a pinch make a four wheel dolly and put the mortar pan on top.👍👍👍👍👍

    Thanks Don for putting up a video its been a while. I guess we saw a little OCD there on the mortor thing. Yes it looks good even if no one will ever see it. I am the other way. Is it done will it hold the weight good off to the next thing. But my father was one that over built his homes he just had to do the extra extra things. 104 is hot for anyone time to sit in front of the AC. Good 2 C U again!

    This style foundation has the advantage of being easy to repair to get the house level after it settles. Usually just jack and shim.
    Depends on how stable the ground is as to how often it has to be shimmed.

    • @affordabledesertliving3487
      @affordabledesertliving3487  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Very constructive comment Fhuber. So appreciate that. The good thing is that this hard caliche soil is down only about 1 ft from the surface. Its so hard that anything placed on it that is high and dry like my land is usually doesnt settle much if at all. Thanks as always for watching.
