- It's super hot and there appears to be no real relief from the heat unlike super wet last year. But I am super stoked about the gradual progress I am making on my "Big House" and the work has to go on.

Wow Don. I can't believe the stamina that you have! You are amazing. And, it is such a huge pleasure seeing all those birds at your pond! Thrilling for you! 👍👍
Thanks so much Cuz Shirley! Yeah no end to birds here for sure!
God bless you Don for giving the birds a place to drink you sure know a lot about birds
Thats so encouraging. Thanks Tim! Yep there are no end to amazing birds here. One of the reasons I moved here.
My hats off to you Don, that's a lot of work out in that heat! You motivated me to get off my arse! Thanks!
That so tickled me to hear that. Thanks for watching!
Ok you asked for it. the consistency of the mortar is fine. Water after it has set will make the concrete harder. Just one little tap of that loaded trowel and the mortar will stick to it pretty much even upside down. Makes it easier to spread on a vertical surface. that is why you see masons tapping their trowels all the time. Your waterfall is a thing of beauty, and the birds love it. It brings birds to a bird watcher. I am surprised at the variety. I think it is a true success.
Good tips Richard. Definitely got me thinking about my concrete construction methodology. Thanks for watching.
Glad you are able to
tolerate the heat, drink water and take care of yourself. Looks like your doing a good job.
Thanks Jan! Appreciate you watching!
You amaze me. I wish I had half your energy and gumption! Kudos to you for having the guts to build your own home. I am looking forward to the finished product.
Thanks so much gypsy. You are young and should have the energy no problem to build your own home. Just need the financial resources and the time!
Glad to see you again Don! I'm glad you're ok was wondering where you were. I hope all goes well. Stay hydrated.
Thanks so much for watching Johnny and all of your well wishes. Yup drinking water is all 2nd nature here in the desert.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 😊👍
Later in your build, you might use plaster of paris in your new house. Its much lighter than concrete and can be chiseled and shaped. Plaster has outstanding water stopping qualities and will outlast anything around you. The Egyptians used plaster and some of their work is still in use. A local architect insists plaster of paris is lime plaster, so shop for it under both names. Your rough concrete would have turned better looking all by itself. I'd like to know if plaster is affordable, locally. Az or New Mexico is where i hope to move to.
Thanks for watching and the info Willard!
You are truly a gift to Mother Nature with your husbandry of the dwellers who share your spot of land. Pollinators, birds of all kinds, and who knows what lurks around the fountain in the wee hours of the night and early morning all appreciating your gift of life. I spent k-5 grades out there in the SW (Boulder City, NV) and, as a kid, the heat never phased me in the least. I revisited my old stomping grounds when I turned 70 (nine years ago) and the heat damned near knocked me to the ground! I used to run barefoot over asphalt roads where the repair spots were constantly melted and it was "hohum". When I visited there in 2014 I simply stuck to the road! Your stamina amazes me! Keep it up---this Old Timer really enjoys your endeavors and stick-to-it attitude. Thanks!
"fazed"---I had a drift off to Star Trek there for a moment. . . .
Thanks so very much for all of that encouragement and sharing your adventures from years ago. Cheers.
Congratulations on getting that tooth done, you must feel good about that and it looks nice. Thanks for making that water fountain in the desert for all those lovely birds! Foundation looking good!
Thanks ever so much for coming by and checking things out PM. How kind to comment on the ol senior smile. Yes its so much nicer to smile now without the bar fight look LOL. The fountain is a constant source of facination since I never know what type or species of patron will show up at any given moment.
Looking great Don, you look super healthy. Thanks for the bird videos, very enjoyable.
Lovely to see you coming by and watching! Glad you enjoyed the vid.
Going to be a beautiful house, so satisfying to watch it take shape from the beginning. Such a peaceful place to work, as well, and thanks for sharing the birds. I love that part as much as the building stuff!
Wow such heartening comments Cheryl. Yes its one amazing adventure and I feel so privledged to enjoy this part of my life.
Wow! Looking great! I really enjoy the DIY aspect of your videos, but I am slowly becoming more and more interested in the bird segments.
Frank to me birds are living singing artwork. To ignore birds to me would be like a famous painter lining the streets with their paintings and I just swiftly walk by and dont even look at them. Hope that analogy makes sense. So appreciate you watching the vids!
SO happy to see you Don! I was wondering how your were managing the heat. Glad you were able to escape it for a bit and also happy to see how your foundation is coming along. Very impressive. Take care and yes, 104 is no place for you to be out working, so take those heat breaks 😀 good news on getting the tooth work done too--and I think you have a hidden talent on that singing🥰 and thanks for showcasing those beautiful birds 👋👋👋
Thanks as always for being so faithful to watch these vids Martha! So appreciate your lovely comments and for being here.
I'm impressed with your positive outlook, especially with the heat!
How kind. Thanks very much!
Hey Don! Great to see you are still there. I must thank you for showing and identifying all the wonderful birds. That fountain is a great contribution to the land. Keep hydrated and take good care of yourself. Bless you!
Thanks Steve! Yes indeed the most fun/interesting structure in my yard. So great to never know who is going to come to drink also.
I can’t explain the joy I felt seeing you had posted. Good to see your smiling face Don. Thank you for the jokes, birds and showing us your progress.
wow what a beautiful comment. Just lovely. Thank you!
Appreciate you sharing, enjoyed the bird watching. Had no idea the amount of different species that are in the desert areas. Good job on the peers!
One of the dreams I have always had for this property is airbnb for birders. The birds here never disappoint!
Don, You're a great influence to a lot of people and an inspiration. Stay young... Stay healthy... and continue to be you. Thanks for the video! From veteran Charlie.
Thanks so much Charlie. Lovely words of encouragement.
The best thing you did early on was the waterfall/pond. You get to enjoy it every day. I am amazed at the variety of wildlife you have to enjoy.
Its interesting Marilyn. Associates of mine heavily criticized the waterfall pond as an extra thing that wasnt a good choice to build at the time. I am constantly looking out the window at all of the beautiful patrons that come to drink at it.
Hey Don checking in! I see you are doing well. Your pond sure was the best idea ever for the birds and wild life. Such a nice variety of bird visitors.❤ Till next time. Take care.
Thanks as always for coming by Sylvia!
I cant wait to see your house!. I loved the bird footage. Stay hydrated and best wishes!
Glad you enjoyed the bird footage! Yep exciting stuff building a house!
Congrats on your new toothy smile!! Nice to see that us seniors can get some replacable parts :))
Thanks Rags! I love my dental work that was super affordable in Mexico.
Good to see you, Don. Be careful in that heat.
Thanks James. I will take it easy for sure.
Hey Don! Great work in adverse weather! Thanks for showcasing God's creations in displaying so many beautiful birds. Impressive!
Thanks ever so much for watching. Lots more vids coming!
You are doing a great job !!!!
Can't wait to see the floor start!!!!
How exciting, Don!
By all means, STAY HYDRATED!
Thanks so much Joanne! Excited to keep building here thats for sure!
Wow Don the bones of the house is looking great! And of course seeing Roadie and the other birds is a treat. It's great to know that you are guiding as well, I hope to book a trip in November! Keep up the great work!
Thanks very much John for all of the encouraging comments.
Pillars look great Don I know you are happy with the progression. Six months from now l bet you will be in your big house.
Loved all the birds too! Cheers!
Wow Nannygoat I love how you think on this one! Glad you enjoyed the birds. Arent they amazing?
I'm so grateful I was able to visit and get to know you and all your fabulous birds. Can't wait to monitor your progress. Wish I was there to help. Really ambitious undertaking and so impressive that you doing it all yourself.
Hi Jim. It was absolutely one of the most fun things I had done in a long while joining you on the bird excursion we undertook. The birds definitely didnt disappoint! Thanks for all of your encouragement!
Really enjoyed all the birds! I’ve never seen a scaled quail before. Thanks for showing us your work!
Thanks so much for watching. Yes! Scalies are real characters and I love having them here in my yard.
It looks great to me. I don't know anything about construction :) thank you for the nice and relaxing view of all the beautiful birds.
Your so welcome Juana. So glad you enjoyed the beauty of my colorful visitors.
Looking great, the birds were beautiful.🐦👍
Thanks so much. Its so fun living with such amazing birdlife.
Thankyou so much for adding the names to the bird footage. We get most of those birds you've shown in my area of Phoenix but I've never seen a Scaled Quail here in Phx yet. Beautiful! I enjoy your posts & funnies... Keep up the good work!❤
Thanks so much. Yes Scaled Quail love open grassy areas with mesquite. I think Phoenix might be a bit too urban for them. Not sure, just a guess.
Nice work Don. That heat is a killer. I especially loved the birds and the beautiful music. Really really enjoyed seeing such a variety of birds. I’ll bet they are thankful for the drink. ❤❤❤
So delighted you enjoyed all the birds Pam! The Pond is my favorite part of my yard as you know.
Sure glad to see you pulled through your appendicitis episode okay and are back to work! I'm a retired construction worker from the desert and know about working in the heat. Take extra care, my friend. Sure enjoy seeing the birds. We did a fair amount of bird watching during my years on the road, but now that we're in a fixed location and have cats we had to stop feeding birds due to the cats.
Thanks for watching! Yes very kind and responsible of you to not draw birds to cats for sure.
Thank you for showing all the different BIRDS that come to your water fountain!!
Your so welcome. Arent they amazing?
Loved the bird tutorial!! The progress you have made is awesome. Understand the heat...... and the very little rain. Sending good vibes and thoughts!
Thanks so much and so delighted you enjoyed the bird clips!
I liked how you showed how easily the forms release without using a releasing agent in the desert. Most contractors would state that as an impossibility but they just don't experience moisture meter reads at 15 percent. You are making tremendous progress in the heat. Thankyou for hydrating the birds too! Your selection of music to accompany the birds at the water fall/pond is really soothing in this heat. Don't forget to take a dip now and then yourself! Awesome job!
LOL thats not why we spray forms, it is so the cement wont soak to them, the purpose is So the form can easily be reused
I currently have re-used the forms easily. They just peeled off super slick cause its so crazy dry here.
Glad you enjoyed the birds and music Sheridan! Yep sooner or later I will need to find another pool. That is until I can build my own right?
Good to see you again!! Congratulations! those concrete blocks look good with the re-surface, great progress, but please be careful in that heat. Love all the birds coming around for a drink and appreciate the identification, too!
So appreciate all of these lovely comments about bird I.D. Definitely love filming birds here.
It’s great to see your progress, Don!
Thanks so much Helene. Appreciate you watching!
Great to see you looking so great! Congratulations on the progress.
Thanks so much for all of the encouragement Lana!
Sub’d….the birds are grateful….so sweet 👀🇺🇸🕊
Thanks so very much for the sub! Stay tuned for lots more adventures.
Doing a great job, remember steady as she goes will get it done. Especially with that heat!
Great advice. Taking it easy a bit now but will get back to more serious work soon!
Hey Don, always enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work.
I enjoyed the birds and that you provided the names of them all. That was great. Interesting video, but be careful working out in that heat! Hope you are drinking lots of water and not pushing too hard.
Hi Deb. Its always difficult to rein myself in as I am one of those gung ho focused people. That said I am indeed doing excellent and drinking lots of fluids.
First thing I want to say is " I am glad you are OK" you must quit doing this to your loyal viewers. Wondering what if anything happened to you. Next thing is I live in Central Texas and we have been experiencing a normal Texas summer. 100 plus for over thirty days lol. Your foundation blocks are looking awesome. At 76 I don't think I would have worried about the looks of the blocks lol. Cannot wait until you start the build. God Bless you in all you do.
Thanks a ton for faithfully watching all of these videos Rodney. So great to have you here. Yep sometimes with all of the busyness I dont get to put up as many videos as I should.
I’m glad that you defined that it is 104F and not 104C.
LOL yes no question! 104C would definitely not work for me!
Glad to see you take such care sharing your progress and life! Congrats on the foundation!
Thank you so much Matt!
Great looking smile. Matches your personality
Wow what a lovely comment. Thank you Catherine!
I feel ya on the heat, stay hydrated my friend😃❤️💪🦅
Yup chugging liquid all day these days. Thanks for watching.
Great job, Don. This summer has been particularly brutal. It's nice to see you making progress. Videos like yours always give me the extra motivation to get up and continue the projects I've started. I hope the extreme thunderstorms we got in Tucson didn't reach you. All the best!
Nope. No serious thunderstorms here at all. Hoping badly for more rain though.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Here's to hoping!
Glad to see your still posting.. That almost hurt watching you do the mortar. Glad your almost done with it.
Yep mortar is now officially done!
Well Don ,it`s good to see you back again looking well and making great progress with your new structure . As always you have done a great job on the support pillars .That was some very nice bird footage.I`m really looking forward to your next installment. ATB
So delighted to see your comment Graeme and to know that you are still following me after all of this time. So encouraging mate.
Mate , i`m here for the long hall.I truly look forward to all of your endeavours.
WOW this heat is hanging on. to long. I hope you and your birds are doing okay. Take care of yourself and keep hydrated and take breaks when you can.
Hi Jan. Yep taking great care of the ol senior physique. Thanks for commenting and being such a faithful subscriber.
Once on a job doing a foundation when it was cold mornings, i was pushin a wheelbarro several hundred feet. After lunch it was warm and sun shining. I had shorts with me and put them on. My calves and shins were sunburned then i think we had to repair that spot cause a bobcat hit it.
Safety is important for sure.
Good to see you! The vision is taking shape! Drink water!😊
Thank you Sue! So amazing to see the adventure unfold. Super thankful here.
Nice to see you are doing good. Pillars look good. Will be fun seeing your home go together. Thanks much.
I am so enjoying this building adventure. Thanks for watching Lee!
To help eliminate rock pockets in concrete....
Concrete should be vibrated
And tap the outside of the forms with a hammer
Super great tip. Thanks Jim!
The birds are so amazing.
No question. Some gorgeous stuff here!
Loved seeing all the different birds. How are your trees doing? Exciting to see that much foundation work done. Drink plenty of water even if you are heat tolerate. Best wishes.
Great advice Wanda. Sipping on a huge glass of ice and orange juice as we speak. Trees are doing great overall. Will post a video update on them soon.
Yeah finished columns! Naaahhh!
My 16x40 structure over my barn is awesome! You will love the expanded space!! Go get'm tiger! Goodonyas!
Thanks for the encouragement mate.
Don, I really admire your application of mortar to the pillars. I. Thought that the pillars were Called footings. You are an inspiration! I really have to get up off this couch!!!
Thanks so much for the encouragement Buck! I am still working on the proper construction lingo for so many things. Some call them piers, pilons, pillars... footings. Some day I will learn exactly what they are called.
New subscriber here . Thanks, I’ve learned so much ! I’m 57 and I’m considering purchasing land in AZ. Don’t see myself working past 60 . Trying to catch up on your videos and didn’t see where you get your water from ? Thanks again you’re very inspiring !
Joseph I get most of my water from rainwater harvesting my 200sq ft roof. I do have about 3 shipments of water per year to add to that. 1600 gallons each time @ $250.00 ea. Hope that helps.
" I'm cry-y-y-ing, over you." cause I don't have any tips so, I decided to level out a bit of praise that might just hold you together , body and soul. "The Living Desert " was this Disney film that I saw as a kid that showed you all sorts of creatures that survive in the desert but such an array of birds, living and surviving under such conditions where you are living, is eye opening.
Yep lots of wildlife here for sure.
Sir you are one amazing fellow. Wow I am so impressed. Wishing you joy and some cooler days. Many hugs.
Thanks so much GrandmaBugsPlace! Such an encouraging comment!
Excellent! Great work.
Lake Havasu 🌞 Az
Many thanks for the encouragment!
Great job, I love your new design because it will give a level square foundation. 😊
Thanks very much Dora for watching. Yep delighted with the design so far.
Oh my gosh....birds are so happy and thankful
Yes they love to chug H2o on a hot day!
Great to see you Don! Moved to Las Vegas recently and triple digits have been everyday~ Be Safe Friend and HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE!
Awesome video!
Thanks so very much for watching! Yep Vegas is warm for sure. Hydrate it is!
Hi Don, just checking in…miss you…hope all is well, and you are surviving some of this crazy weather. Hope it hasn’t delayed your progress on the house. ❤Cathy, Surprise,AZ
Hi Cathy! Thanks for checking in. Yes the yeah the heat has delayed things a bit. But I had an important video production to complete! Now available for everyone to view!
Great video. Lots of hard work being done
Thanks so much for your kind encouragement Moro!
That looks amazing 👍. Like the finishing touch to the sides. Excitedly waiting for the next phase ! Please take care in all that heat🔥

Thanks so very much Dee! Appreciate all of the encouragment.

Great job on those pillars! Looking good
Thanks so much tworebels! More update vids coming soon!
Nice job can't wait to watch the rest of the build ......stay cool buddy
Thanks so much and stay tuned!
Hey!! Ooh those Orioles sure are pretty. I had one at my house here in Vail, AZ. Haven't seen it since the one sighting.
Yes I love Scotts Orioles! Just a unique desert species.
When putting mortar on your foundation have a flat wide mortar trowel on your other second hand to catch the excess mortar when applying it. But, we are looking good on this build otherwise. Also, try to get a mortar pan with wheels so your back won't go out pulling that heavy weight. Or in a pinch make a four wheel dolly and put the mortar pan on top.👍👍👍👍👍
David this is golden. A mortar pan with wheels I will definitely look into that one!
Love your little fountain. Pretty birds.
Thanks so much martna!
Don your such an artiste!!
I do my best and love art type projects for sure.
Happy birds and Happy birder
Yes indeed!
Can't wait for your next video
Delighted to hear Gavin! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Don for putting up a video its been a while. I guess we saw a little OCD there on the mortor thing. Yes it looks good even if no one will ever see it. I am the other way. Is it done will it hold the weight good off to the next thing. But my father was one that over built his homes he just had to do the extra extra things. 104 is hot for anyone time to sit in front of the AC. Good 2 C U again!
Thanks so much for watching this storagemann!
Your singing probably drives away wildlife 😅, greetings from Lethbridge AB.
Wow Gordie. Now I get it. Clouds of birds lifted off like a hitchcock movie with just a few bars of the song being uttered. Now it all makes total sense! Oh and greetings from a fellow maritimer (N.B.)
Looking forward to your next update. Hope you’re doing well.
Doing great here! More build vids to come!
Hey cousin! This looks like great progress. It worries me a bit though that you don't wear a dust mask when dumping that concrete mix. All the dust in the air is not good for your lungs...😬
Thanks for your love and concern for me Judy! I hope you and Gords home is still coming along nicely.
The birds and pond are so soothing. I live very close to 3 golf courses and a water reservoir directly behind my house. I get all kinds of birds including crane and mallard ducks even tiny finch completely covering my trees. Very kind of you to give them a place to chill.
water is definitely the key to enjoying bird life of all kinds for sure. Thanks for watching.
This style foundation has the advantage of being easy to repair to get the house level after it settles. Usually just jack and shim.
Depends on how stable the ground is as to how often it has to be shimmed.
Very constructive comment Fhuber. So appreciate that. The good thing is that this hard caliche soil is down only about 1 ft from the surface. Its so hard that anything placed on it that is high and dry like my land is usually doesnt settle much if at all. Thanks as always for watching.
The mortar the merrier.
Oh Donnnnn the birds!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!
Yeah Bec I am so fortunate to live in such a bird rich area! I mean this area is famous globally for its hummers and other stuff! So delighted you enjoyed the bird part.
Nice to see you going strong out there.
Thanks! Appreciate you watching the adventure.
Hi Don. Glad to see another video glimpse into your homestead efforts.
Thanks for watching Mike. Lots more to come.
Good to see it advancing
Thanks for your encouragment John!
Be careful in that heat Young Man! God bless!
Thanks so much for your encouragement. God Bless you as well!

It is good to see you back.
Its great to see you watching whats going on here Daniel. Thanks.
@@affordabledesertliving3487 Just so you will know, I am 79 years old and am a very handy person. I have built many things. I have not commented on the many things that you have done. You are doing the work and you are learning. That is so great.
Keep it going my friend.
Thanks for your encouragement Oscar!
Hey son next time tap the forms sides vigirasly it will work air pockets out looking good don if u put hay bials under your floor on perimeter it will help with temp in house you can stucko hay for fire proofing..
Super suggestion Charles! Thanks!
You do what do sit down and do things gympie Queensland Australia 😊
Yup sitting down is better for sure for "mature" folks working on stuff.
Good job, Don! Stay cool.
Thanks Tim. I will.
Congratulations on that new “Burt Reynolds “ ( thanks to modern dentistry) smile. Foundation looks sharp and thanks for watering the birds, Don. Cheers!
