2005 Ford Focus ZX4 Transmission Doesn't Go Into Gear

- I went out to lunch and when it was time to go back to work my car would not go into gear.
I tried putting it into reverse and drive but it wouldn't do anything.
I called a couple people and they helped guide me in the right direction.
My car was in a safe place so I left it there and had a coworker come pick me up so I could finish my work day. No need to loose money on something like this.
The rod that connects the transmission to the shifter has a plastic bushing that broke. By now a car this old will have plastic pieces that will have become brittle. Frustrating but no need to lose your cool. I've scoured the internet to find the information you need!!
If the bushing isn't whats broken after you take everything off you should take the car to a transmission specialist. That's one area I do not want to experience a problem.

Electrical tape or duct tape would of help to keep in toolbox.
They need to stop makin moving parts out of plastic
I said the same thing!! Until I realized it’s done on purpose. If they stop using plastic parts they don’t make money on new cars.

I got mad at my PRNLD and started pulling on it till parts of it broke 😅 I went to the junk yard and pulled one out of another focus to replace it after this video since I had the console off. Looked like new. 😁

Wow, your video and ALL these comments are giving me hope! I am going to order the part and try this on my partners car. We cannot afford a new transmission, which is what Jiffy Lube said it needed. They are wanting like 3500 for that. The car has the EXACT same issue as yours, everything works fine and all of a sudden the gears are not "catching". I will keep you updated!!
Please do keep me updated bc car places do this often. I just find it to be such a scam. Obviously if it doesn’t work then you’ll need a new transmission. Hoping that is not the case for you.

girl you just saved my life. I went into the console and not only was the bushing gone but there were already zip ties rigged up like you did--but the one right on the gear had snapped which is why it was stuck. I've been driving it with the zip ties for 4 years?! Whoever sold me this car and didn't bother to fix it right, thanks a lot...

I’m very disappointed that car manufacturers can make crappy parts, and get away with it. I guess consumer safety doesn’t matter to any of the “big 3.”

I don’t know if this is my issue or but my car started slowing down while driving and now it’s not moving while I’m gears so could this be my issue?

WOW - I experienced this issue just a few days ago and ran through all of the possible problems until I discovered that it was the same one you highlighted in your video. Thanks to you and the "bushing tool" replacement I was able to fix the car easily. It should be noted that I went to all of the various national auto parts store looking for the bushing only to find that none of them carried the right one so I ordered one and presto it worked. Thanks again!
Glad it worked out. Silliest thing to break on a car and render it immobile. Older models require online searches. Auto stores don’t make money from carrying old car parts go figure.

This was my exact problem. My brake lights were fine, so didn't seem to be the fuses, but I was able to press in the button to change gear when I pressed the brake, so other tutorials didn't cover my problem, but this one did! I took off the center console, and saw the broken plastic. I'm ordering the replacement. Thank you so much for this video, was able to figure out the problem same day, so now we will only be out of a car for as long as it takes for the replacement to get here.

You will have to look up the part online. Auto parts stores do not carry it because of the year.
