That’s very kind Paul, I did have a couple of days off half way through. It wasn’t so bad in retrospect but it’s always daunting doing a job for the first time. Had a moment after fitting back together where the air con wouldn’t work and I couldn’t remember for sure if I had reconnected the evaporator temp sensor (completely inaccessible with matrix fitted), fortunately I’d just missed the wiring harness behind the radio 🥲 now I just need to figure out why the heating isn’t working, hoping the flap motors just need calibrating 🤞
Tolly, I've watched a number of your jobs but this one is truly insane. I have a 2004 V70 (136,000miles, bought it in 2006). If I had to pay a mechanic to replace the heater core it would probably cost me more than the trade-in value of the car. Over the 16 years I've had it, I probably put in 3 times what it's worth in maintenance, parts and upgrades. Would I scrap it? NO. It would be like shooting an old horse.
I haven’t kept track of the spend on this car but I’d safely assume at least 5 times the cost of the car if we put a price on the labour I have put into it for free. Your V70 should last you forever if you’ve had it that long and are still at what is basically low mileage. I bought mine on 232k miles 7 years ago and it just keeps going!
Tolly, have been waiting for someone brave enough to do this job and record it so that I can step down to the Evap Temp Sensor and replace. Have just got down to the brace bar. Hopefully, by removing the heavy white cable channel so can access it and remove without more dismantling. You have also solved the age old question of where the hell is the sensor located. Brilliant. Sent you some $$s in appreciation. You are an excellent soul. Thank you.
Very glad to help and well done with the job. That’s very kind of you, I’m just happy to see people saving themselves money. Hope everything went well for you.
I did the same job on an ex police, 2002 t5 with 150000 miles on the clock. same dashboard, same leaky heater matrix, the Haynes manual said to do exactly the same as you, I just cut the part of the dashboard that was in the way, and with a little persuasion i managed to remove the old unit, repaired it, and reinstalled the matrix, once the glove box was put back you couldn't see the gap I created unless you were upside down in the passenger seat, (being a volvo it's an unlikely position to ever be in, even in the worst accident).
I had considered cutting the dash however it didn’t look like the matrix could possibly squeeze past the motor housing? Did it cause damage to the matrix?
@@IAMASPANNER I managed to get it out without any damage, I found the leak was where the aluminium core pipes joined the plastic tank, I carefully pulled it apart and used araldite to reassemble, it went back in fairly easily, it worked fine. Proper bodge job I know, but if I'd have had to take the full dash out, I'd have sent it to the scrappers.

You really doing a fantastic job, and put it on U tube, that no body actually doing .its a hard job for you, Thank you very much that you share it to us.
Very BRAVE and adventurous of you to tackle this job! Isn't it a crime that auto manufacturers place components like the heater core (and a/c evaporator) in places so inaccessible. You'd think that they would design them so that they could be replaced without disassembling the car! I have a 2001 V70 (left hand drive) in British Columbia, Canada and I have done many things to the car, but not this. I have to perform a vacuum test of the A/C system and will be changing the condenser and compressor soon and I very much hope that the evaporator isn't leaking. That said, when I bought the new compressor, I ordered an evaporator just in case. Fingers crossed that I won't have to take out the dashboard! Your video is ground-breaking and valuable. I've subscribed!
Well done! Massive job. It’s rare to find something on this era of Volvo that is so difficult to do. You’ll get to 500,000 miles in a warm and toasty car.👍
Great video man! On my v70 2006 the steering wheel is on the left and I had to replace the heater core as well. But I could pull it out from the driver side without any issues.
I wondered why you went through the trouble of removing the whole dash, don't you know that's not needed at all? Then I realized it's a RHD car :) On a LHD car you just need to disconnect the steering shaft coupler and remove the brake pedal switch and then you can 'just' slide the core in and out. Definitely still a very fiddly job and very awkward position to work in. Hardest part was getting the pipes to seat properly so the clips can get back in.... they just wouldn't budge until I realised that a bit of grease on the o-rings could help. Made all the difference!
Yes I couldn’t believe the difference was so severe. They could’ve made the dashboard that slight bit different and there’d be space to remove it. Glad you got sorted with yours!
@@IAMASPANNER I guess since Sweden drives on the right side of the road, using LHD,they were like: let's get revenge on all the RHD countries for making us design a different version! Jk. Mate, what a job. I have the same vehicle with nearly 400K and i want to see mine get to 500K + also - i wouldn't have a clue if my heater matrix went bang.
Congrats, is your engine all original still? I have low oil pressure when starting, I’m just putting the car back together after replacing the oil pump. I’m hoping it’s not the bottom end with too much clearance in the bearings or something.
@@IAMASPANNER The head was removed at 373K miles due to a burnt out valve which was replaced along with a couple of lifters - other than that it's all original - the pistons were still all in good shape along with the bores and still doesn't burn any oil. @@TT-it6cr that’s good to know. Trying to service the car more frequently now every 5k preferably. I didn’t treat it that well for a few years but am trying to make up for it now. Really hope it will make 500k on this block although I’m getting very tempted to tear it down and take a look at everything. Just done 2,000 miles in a week, Germany and back then London, it hasn’t missed a beat as always.
@@IAMASPANNER Has the 6 speed box made much of a difference? I would really like to do that conversion, it really needs it. Although it returns pretty impressive mpg as it is. Cornwall to home - 428 miles, to half a tank.

I've got some rattling on the front left going on over rough surfaces I need to investigate. I must admit I don't think I could do the heater matrix job. I would just get one of those dashboard heaters that plug in the 12v socket and hope it's good enough to clear the screen.

Sorry for the different terminology, but I'm from the United States. What you refer to as a "heater matrix," we simply call a heater core. From the looks of it, I thought that you were definitely going to change out the a/c evaporator as well.
Reinstalling the dashboard on LHD United States models is not as easy as it would seem. For example, in my 2004 XC70, the lower center portion of the dashboard kept getting hung up on the shift knob lever assembly. Additionally, the lower portion of the dashboard is also difficult to realign with the primary and second row air conditioning tubes on the bottom.
I was sweating while seeing the video, what an insane job. I have a '08 S60 and fortunately is LHD. Why the heater started to bleed? Corrosion? Wrong or low quality antifreeze?
You may be interested to know that my local garage mechanic changed my V70 leaking heater matrix the other week in a few hours without removing the dash board. Hope this helps someone who may have the same problem.
Out of curiosity (and because the matrix on my UK xc70 is blocked) could you not just cut out the section of dashboard in that lower corner of the glovebox aperture to facilitate the matrix removal? I know that it would never look factory again, but with some ingenuity the cut-out section could be re-fitted and would barely be noticeable once the glovebox is back in.. or is there something else in the way?
Yes I believe you could do that but I think you still have to bend the matrix about to get it out/in so I decided removing the whole lot was the only option.
