    I took a break from salmon fishing in 2012 and the difference from then to now is frightening something definitely needs to be done about it. Great to see you out on the river again though. Well done on getting two this season Ive only had sea trout so far.

    Thanks for the video, Ian. Always nice to be out and about, whether it is on the river, on the hill or through the woods.
    I agree that there is lots that can be done on virtually every river and also that the great unknown is what's going on at sea. Hatcheries have to help. The more fish in the river that can migrate, the more chance of some coming back.
    Little is being said about the impact of fish farms at the moment, very little about the number of seals.

    • @scottishoutdoorlife
      @scottishoutdoorlife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Colin it was nice to get out again. Agreed, the seals have a huge part to play, we just need to be doing everything we can at the moment to give them a helping hand. Hatcheries are key to supplement the populations until some of the mitigating factors are reduced.

      @@scottishoutdoorlife There seems to be either a reluctance for "government" (in whatever form) to get involved other than to say that conservation and clean rivers are good but not to get too involved. They are actively against hatcheries, which is a bit daft to me, against culling (unless it is deer and they want them eliminated) as everything will find its "natural balance" in the wild. Which we know it won't because of 101 factors we have no control over elsewhere. So, we need to control what we can control to give the fish and everything else in the river, the chance to catch up with the pace of change in an industrialised world.

    Had a week on the Earn in mid April. Not great conditions, but what was worrying is that in an entire week i never saw a fish... Not even a trout, plenty of flies hatching and the river looked great, but to not see anything was a fair bit concerning. A couple of guys were talking about a huge amount of seals off the coast and estuaries, but that doesn't explain the trout. Im hoping i was just unlucky

    • @scottishoutdoorlife
      @scottishoutdoorlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      There are more cormorants and gooseanders recorded on the Earn than on the Tay now proportionately to the size of the River. This won't be helping at all and would in part explain the low fish numbers in general on the river. What beat were you fishing?

    Hi Ian I agree 100% with what you are saying about the plight of or beloved salmon and sea trout. Every river should have its own hatchery and keep it in operation until a recovery of the population is seen. Once that has been achieved the hatchery could be mothballed until it is required again. I fish the Dee and it is exactly the same situation there, not catching fish but worse still not seeing any fish. Most anglers and especially ghillies are very disappointed with the situation

    • @scottishoutdoorlife
      @scottishoutdoorlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      Everyone constantly says that hatcheries don't work yet time and time again we're seeing rivers stop their hatcheries and fall off a cliff. Couldn't agree more there is a place for a hatchery if the River can't sustain itself.

    Ian, as all you said at start of video would be correct, but also sea temperature rises has serious consequences on migratory fish, the EMOC system is shifting in the northern hemisphere, and we can expect really bad years ahead. If we stand any chance of saving the species, hatcheries are a must on all rivers. Well proven on the river corrib in Galway but still has its challenges with the sea temperatures. As like the Scottish rivers the Irish Rivers are a mirror image with little or no spring run. We have had a message from the Irish Fisheries Board to be vigilant on reporting any pink salmon we catch, as their numbers have increased over the years, this is also connected to the changing sea currents. love the Videos by the way, especially when im resting, and let you do the wading.....Cheers.

    Good to see you out and about looked like a nice day to be on the water . It’s a simple answer to what has happened to our fisheries ,Humans . We’ve done just about everything we can to destroy what we have . We’ve overfished everything, we have contributed to global warming we continue to Pollute or oceans , rivers and ground with toxic chemicals and people just don’t care it’s always someone else’s problem . Half the governments don’t believe there is a problem the other half do so we are at a stalemate. We will continue to debate these issues until there is nothing left . I’m 74 years old and these issues have been going on my entire life , as much as we fisherman, hunters and outdoors people try to make ourselves heard no one is listening. I hate to say it but I do not see anything changing until there is no more food or drinkable water left in the world then people will ask what happened ? Heading out for a couple of days to do some fishing:-) Thanks for sharing

    Up here in Argyll the Awe is on dire straights. 2 fish so far all season I believe. This should be prime time. Used to have a hatchery years ago which got taken away because the fishery board decided that nature would find a way and interfering could genetically make the hatchery fish weaker.

    Only been salmon fishing for about 11 years and last year was my best to date this maybe due the lack of commercial fishing at sea during covid and angling pressures or maybe I'm getting slightly better at it haha, but I know one thing for sure commercial fishing at sea around the whole world is causing a major problem for every species of fish but as for the salmon they are taking away the feeding for them and even the species near the top of the food chain are struggling dolphins seals etc are feeding on bigger prey such as salmon so I think the knock-on effect of all that combined it's just too much for them of course the lack of feeding for them is a problem combined with the climate change I would say they are just about done unfortunately.
