You have to be a certain kind of person to work with goats. They're challenging for a lot of reasons. They're wonderful creatures, but I think folks should think real hard before buying goats. I had some free goats that I ran with my sheep for a season, but I gave them to a friend who has an affinity for them, and barn space. I'd recommend hair sheep.

Southern ky 50 years ago several ppl ran sheep. then all lost interest when wool tanked etc. a few are getting back into the hair sheep now. would like to see more ppl involved here. great option for smallholders.

14:30 we have some yellow polywire that was bought in 85 when my grandpa started kinda rotationally grazing (not this intense) my dad has used it daily moves for 20 years. If I hadn’t have cut the stuff into a half dozen pieces when I was a stupid 12 year old... it wouldn’t of died just this year! But we don’t know the brand.. prolly sum cheap fleet farm stuff
Very helpful video for new sheep farmers! Appreciate you willingness to help us learn! I actually stopped feeding my sheep grain and only feed hay now because the ewes were just getting too crazy when it was time to feed. I've almost had ewes stomp on their babies to get to the grain quickly. Not worth it at all id rather just give them oatlage/ straw if I wanted to get some grain in their diet.
My daughter had a flock of sheep for her FFA project. She fed them grain when she first got them but ended up just feeding hay and mineral. They were so noisy and aggressive on grain, she used to call them her crack whores.
@@RedTop-yo4ds ROFL yea they get so crazy about grain. Its not even worth it during lambing season Id rather just feed them more hay haha. Corn is cheaper than hay in some places tho I think is why a lot of people feed it.

About those minerals. You said in another video they poop out about 80-85% of the minerals they consume, thereby remineralizing the soul.
At 80%, I assume that equals 4 years of mineral feeding that’s put back into the soil. Is there a saturation level in the soil that can be measured? I guess when the livestock stops consuming a mineral that that means the forage is providing them with enough but for how long would that re-mineralized soil provide that ideal level? Is feeding minerals ever going away?
And if commercial minerals are not available, what other methods are there to provide those minerals? (Assuming the soil is sufficiently amended already?
We used to have sheep grazing along our property and when the babies came along, it was hard not to think Mint Sauce!

At the end of your video there seems to be a small cattle panel type hoop structure off in the distance looking over the bed of your kubota. Was just wondering what that might be for?
The dog feeders did not have a roof. I wonder why? It would protect the feeder and the dog food from rain and snow and it would give a little shelter to the guard dogs under the most severe conditions. Are the dogs enough like a wolf that they don't need shelter at all? Also, with their drag, how can they keep out predators?

John Scarborough It is usually old conveyor belt. I don’t know if Free Choice Enterprises will sell just the belt or not. If you can find a factory that is replacing belt, that is the way to go. There may also be online sources selling used belt.
Don’t use just rubber, like a stall mat. It will deteriorate in a year. The conveyor belt has steel mesh layers. It will last forever.

Maybe create a "water moat" at the sides of the dog feeder, using one of those poultry waterers? (To keep ants out)

2-3 weeks is the average length for keeping the rubber drag on them.
Im going to implement this for my pup, always following me out of pasture...

@@WillieB06 Free Choice Enterprises sells two different thicknesses of rubber flap material to cover their mineral feeder. The thinnest one is what you want to use for sheep. The thicker cover works great for cattle.
Hi Greg in your opinion what degree slope would be unsafe for sheep to graze on? Just wondering because my wife and I just bought a large track of pasture and there in a nice all seasonal river that runs the length of the property but there is a steep incline to the river. Also would like to get your thoughts on cattle as well if it’s different than sheep. Thanks Greg.
The steeper the terrain, the better suited it is for sheep or goats. Cattle can graze those areas but are more likely to move soil if the ground is soft.

@Greg Judy Would you raise sheep for wool and sheep for meat differently? If you were breeding ewes, say, twice a year-ish would you still keep them outside to lamb and graze on mainly grass?
With twice per year lambing, one of your lambing periods will be in weather that is not conducive to lambing on pasture. This is why we target one healthy lambing period on grass just like nature does it with deer. When you target accelerated lambing (twice per year, now you are doing something that is not natural) You may need to put them in a barn and feed supplement because they lambed out of season and there is not any green grass to produce milk for their young lambs. We have been in this sheep business a good while, what we have found out is that nature always knows best!

Do you have 5 sheep per acre or do you have more? Do you lessen your flock before winter or a drought?
We sell off our yearly breeding stock every August.

i've seen some stuff where they bale graze out in Alberta once the snow gets too deep for the animals to dig through
Bale grazing is your best bet up there. In 4 feet of snow, animals will have trouble digging through that.

We get our mineral from FCE, Free Choice Enterprises. google it.
Brandon De Rijk With a mix, the animals can’t choose what they are lacking. They will eat an excess of some minerals trying to correct a deficiency for others. A mineral excess is worse than a deficiency because it will make other minerals unavailable.
Also, if you look at most bag mix's tags it will list iron oxide. Aka rust. I think the mineral companies get paid to get rid of it. Iron is known to block copper up take. It is also extra available if your soil does not have near perfect PH. Excessive iron causes anemia. The major parasites for sheep also cause anemia. Funny how every cattle or goat mineral mix that contains copper has a huge warning on it not to feed to sheep. If you must use a mix find a goat or cattle mix that contains copper and does not have the words iron or ferric on the label anywhere. Start with lower ppm and work your way up. Soil or dirt has plenty of iron In it. You only need it if you keep your sheep in a barn with a concrete floor year round.

@@seepingspringsfarm6017 I'm just an ordinary fifth-generation Californian, and I eat lamp chops frequently. :) Just wish I could find local grass-fed lamb, not from New Zealand. Nothing against New Zealand, but it's kinda far away and adds to the cost. I'd prefer sheep grown here in California, but just try to find some in your local grocery store. And our nearest regenerative farm is so far out in the boonies it's hard to get to.
