- In this video, I explain the difference between Color Grading and Look Development. Sometimes we think that Color Grading is all that our images need after shooting but building a Look it's an essential yet often overlooked step of the process.

@@JGphotoyt yeah lot of times i grade my photos in Da Vinci Resolve also. it turns out great! i use it a lot as cover for my video.

Great tutorial. As far as I know in the HSL saturation node the gamma affects the lower saturated areas and the gain affects the higher saturated areas and not the midtones and highlights.
Really really good video that WAY MORE people need to watch. I can't stand the "how to create *insert popular movie* look" videos where they onky grade one single shot using color correction tools and heavy qualitiers. Not only the result is never very good, the "look" falls apart as soon as you try to apply it on other shots. It's just misinformation and onky confuses beginners.
Great stuff personally I'm quite a bit beyond this simple grade but great stuff for people getting into color grading behind a film lut, I think this will help a lot of burgeoning colorists to help them understand the different rooms between the luts they use. Great work buddy!

I really love your approach to color grading (well...look development!). I've been working with Resolve for years now and you are one of the few on TH-cam that understand well the "film look".
By the way, which DTCL are you using? Is it the Hue Bezier Split-Tone DCTL? I would like to try it :)

This is all way over my pointy head, as I am still looking for the Go button my my camera and DaVinci, but I want to share my thoughts for other filmmakers who are in my spot and level of knowledge: I find advanced methods and theory will float in my head as I work and bits that I saw you cover here Jimmy comes down and touches my brain at the moment I need it.
I have trained adults for years, and we think differently as adults. We are most interested in finding things we know and applying new information for adults to digest. It's Why adults always pester instructors with "Why?"
They aren't like kids when you could say, "I told you so, that's why" and get away with it.😂

Yeah absolutely, you can easily export LUTs from Resolve to load them on a monitor. Normally for grading you would want to use 65 point LUTs but for on set monitoring 33 point LUTs are preferred as most monitors don’t support 65
@@jimmyonfilm the LUTs should be in 3d right? Should i dev look using tetra tool in fusion or normal node should be fine?
Also can the LUTs contain CST and color choice together?
@@ahappyreindeer3383 yes, they should be 3D. Starting from Resolve 18 you can export LUTs even when using dctls so it’s super handy and I would use the color page cause it’s way more neat than fusion. Yes the LUT would include CST. I don’t understand what you mean with color choices could you expand? :)

@@ahappyreindeer3383 yes, you can. You can pretty much create the look that you want, and if it’s emulating film and that’s the look you want than you can save it as a LUT. For example with tetra you can get pretty close at emulating film negative. If you’re talking about using film emulation plug ins in a node and then export a LUT, I’m not sure every plug in would allow that, but I might be wrong, maybe they all do hahah. As in term of color grading; I would consider a look LUT as broad strokes and I would go for keys or crazy adjustments cause it would limit the flexibility of the LUT
So look development is creating a grade that applies well over all your shots, and coloring is tweaking it afterwards?
Yess, but the tools to create a look could be more sophisticated then the color grading ones. For example in the look dev process one could use Tetra DCtL to define the rendition of skin tones (any color really) which is a way more sophisticated and less prone to breakage compared to using the HSL curves in Resolve. While in color grading process you would use simpler or more “sharp” tools to tweak the footage to make it fit the look the best possible way
why applying CST from LogC to Cineon on a 4-color gradient that is in rec709?
The color gradient is a 2D representation of a 3D cube it doesn’t have a color space. Just like a grey scale ramp. So Basically what I’m doing is comparing the smoothness of 2 transformations

Does your kodak 50d lut works with braw?
Yes, you just need to decode the Braw file into ArriWideGamut (color space) and ArriLogC (gamma) from the camera raw tab. Or use a color space transform. Overall it works very nicely with black magic footage
Why is your gamma 2.2 and not standard 2.4
Cause my monitor has a gamma of 2.2

Could you use the color warper + qualifier limited to highlight and do another node for shadows instead of the paid dctl? I understand the curves could do it too, but I always find those to be too sensitive and inaccurate
