This was helpful! I have a two-year-old Phalaenopsis which I bought the day after Mother’s Day when it was only five dollars. I thought the aerial roots would die if they were forced to grow in a pot, butYou’ve given me the courage to get this orchid reported. Thank you so much!
You can watch this to see how they grow under the cares of Mother Nature: th-cam.com/video/5XkfqGkASSE/w-d-xo.html , or google “Phalaenopsis in situ”. We can find that all the orchid roots are attaching on tree trunks. Only in certain exceptional circumstances, orchid roots grow into the air. For Phalaenopsis growing in pot, too many aerial roots outside the pot implies immature watering skill. Yes, aerial roots are there for a purpose, in this case, the roots in pot were dysfunctional, the orchids had to send out its roots into the air to search for moisture. I would have left the aerial roots alone, but then, that’s me. That’s how they grow naturally in the forests. There’s a TH-cam channel called Evelyn Perfect and she only uses air to grow her orchids!
Hi, Y Liberal, Thank you for watching my channel for a while. You’ve missed some videos here. Please watch this video first th-cam.com/video/5XkfqGkASSE/w-d-xo.html. There are also some other videos about Phalaenopsis raised by mother nature in my channel if you’re interested in. They all do not have aerial roots. Sending out roots into the air is not the way Phalaenopsis growing naturally in the forests. If you leave the roots outside the pot, what will you do when the roots in the pots are aging and dying out after a few years? I won’t say that growing Phalaenopsis without any potting media is impossible. However, it’s difficult to provide water and fertilizers. Maybe you’ve seen some people keep Phalaenopsis alive without potting media. However, the orchids in the channel you named are deteriorating. We can see from the smaller and smaller new leaves and fewer flower counts.
I don't understand all the negative comments. The grower uses media that is very good for his growing environment (outdoor in Taiwan, high humidity, lots of sun, lots of rain). All phalaenopsis I bought imported from Taiwan are grown in moss. There are no problems with them. Most Taiwanese orchid nurseries grow phalaenopsis in moss. They grow and bloom very well. In the forest, orchid roots attach themselves onto tree bark. They're not hanging on the tree. I would not like to have aerial roots as they cannot take up nutrients or water.
If the orchid is kept outside without roof, potting the orchid in sphagnum moss is not a good choice. Because the rains will disturb our watering schedule, make the sphagnum moss wet too long and cause diseases. Orchid nurseries grow orchids from very young plants to blooming orchids in packed sphagnum moss. When people bring them home, some people just blamed on sphagnum moss or the sphagnum moss is too tight. It's interesting, doesn't it? Those people just don't admit that the orchids were dying from their inappropriate cares.
It depends on how fast the orhcid consums water retained in the potting media. When the potting media retain too much water, we can add some inorganic meterials that do not or less absorb water, like styrofoam and gravel. It's difficult to give an exactly number of how big a pot is too big. Gerneral speaking, 1/3 of leaf span in width is usually good to 𝙋𝙝𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙚𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨 orchids.
I soak my moss before potting so that it wraps around the roots easier - holding together while putting the plant into a new pot. It's wet through and the plant can soak up what it needs evenly. Seems to work well for my plants
Most people repot with moist sphagnum moss. The advantages are just like what you have said. As long as we can water the orchid properly to avoid the infections on the open wounds, it doesn't matter that the potting media are moist or dry. Do you notice that I repot the orchid right away after cutting off some dead roots? That's the reason why I use dry sphagnum moss. I expect the open wounds can be dry and sealed before watering. If I use moist sphagnum moss, I'd hang the orchid to wait the woulds dry and sealed before repotting.
