If you want to learn more about how Inkscape works, I have a 50+ part video series where I explain all of the tools and features in Inkscape and demonstrate how they work. Here's the link if interested: logosbynick.com/inkscape/
Hey nick even though i did this years ago I wanted to go back and I realized that the Wood image in your description is now gone. Just so you know man..Ive been commenting and emailing for years so i doubt you will see this but just a heads up man. Thanks for all you di
I absolutely love your tutorials! I have learned so much in just a week of playing with Inkscape! I eve have people asking me to make logos for them! Thank you so much Nick!
I took a vector timber image, separated the multiple grain colours to different layers, and applied the carve effect to each layer. Came out looking great with a few minor adjustments. Exactly what I was looking for.

Basic workaround for Inkscape crashing on the HSB adjust is to avoid it altogether. The HSB adjust is to reduce the brightness of the wood image. There are several ways to end up with the same result but my simple solution was to create a rectangle over the wood image which darkened it: (Note - full credit to Nick. I was a complete beginner before these videos, so if this is helpful to anyone, credit to him) - 'Create rectangles and squares': Draw a rectangle, any size - 'Selection Tool'. Right click on the wood image and select 'Copy' - 'Selection Tool'. Select only your new rectangle - Top Menu 'Edit/Paste Size/Paste Size' [This will make the rectangle the exact size of the wood image] - 'Align and Distribute Menu'. Select both the rectangle and the wood image. Alight vertical and centre - 'Selection Tool'. Select only the new rectangle made. Remove any stroke. Fill with a dark colour and make opacity 50% [Colour I used was picked from the wood image, RGB 3c2510ff] - Select the rectangle and the wood image. Top Menu 'Object/Group' [Or Ctrl+G] - Continue with the tutorial As I say, there is probably loads of different ways to end up with the same thing, but this is what I used, it was easy and it worked.
If anyone wants to still do this and don't because you can't get the wood9 just take a screen shot of the wood and put it in a program like gimp and crop and use it in inkscape. I did and it worked well.
Nick - as others have said, your tutorials are excellent. On some of your tutorials I find myself watching and listening to what you are doing, but not understanding the reason why - thus I robotically copy what you are doing, but not understanding the logic behind the sequence of steps you take. If you could incorporate that a little more, us novices who enjoy this art as a hobby have a better chance of being able to apply it to other designs. But please take this as constructive - you produce brilliant tutorials and effects. Thanks for sharing. D
I agree wholeheartedly the why is so important to understand how to incorporate the techniques into my own ideas as opposed to just copying. That way when a problem occurs I can solve it instead of looking for another tutorial
Awesome video, as I do web sites and some logo design and getting into mobile UI and UX design this is a good way to start learning how to work around digital imaging software, but I'm for sure going to subscribe because you know exactly what you are doing, great video keep them coming.
Hi! Beautiful *Inkscape* Wood Carve Technique! I just spent almost 2 hours figuring how to "inset" carve some Letters into my Inkscape project. Wished I'd seen your tutorial first. But I jus' might "cheat" next time and use my legacy windows *Photoshop* 7 to "inside bevel" those very same letters in a fraction of even your time to possibly get the same effect. Then I could take the whole wood piece into Inkscape and Object Clip it into any shape I want from a circle plaque to a rectangle. But I'm gonna keep learning Inkscape, and really begin to enjoy a much smaller *File* *Size* than what Photoshop would have generated.
Hey Nick! Awesome... you make my life soooo much easier and exciting. Thank you. Could you get a video to show how you get that overlay of your logo in the Left Bottom Corner? you have a few variations, looks nice. cheers!
Nick, you are awesome..love you, respect you and admire you.. thank you so much.. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I've done this kinda stuff before, but took me way longer & my processor(brain) was heavily used..lol !! Cheers!!
When I select the text and choose Path- Object to Path, then Ungroup, then Path- Union. I don't get the little white dots around the text like you see at time 2:25. This screws up the rest of my work. What setting do I have off? This is a very simple tutorial. I have created much more complex graphics following your instructions. Thanks
This is SUCH a good tutorial. And I know it has been a while, but can anyone tell me what I am missing. I feel like I followed the steps exactly. But at 3:47, for some reason when I click Object, Click, Set ... it doesn't do what the tutorial does. Is there a setting or something that I am missing? Other than my error (I'm sure), this is hands down THE BEST tutorial and I'm very grateful. Thanks for your help.
@ 4:11 *Nick* : ...And we're gonna *play* with this a little bit. *wood09.png* : What are you going to do with me; I'm scared 😨 😉 BTW, Nice Video Man, Keep up the good work! 👍
New subscriber - as others have said - excellent tutorial and production. This is now my goto channel for learning Inkscape stuff. However II too am now having to look for a workaround due to the HSB step causing crash in Windows app (Win 7). Maybe I should try this on my under powered Linux machine and see how it works... kudos for the great work!
Great tutorial. I'm sure for what I was doing there's a simpler way with fewer duplications, but it'll take some fiddling for me to get there. But the effect looked good - tried mine on a sort of granite-like texture using text and a vector icon. Came out looking believable (I think).
i love this and well done for it you are talented!! im having a problem as im trying to follow your video and get so far and then i do the object-clip-set and my black box doesnt go do you know what im doing wrong??
Hello Nick. Nice to watch vedio. Really well explained just like profetional teacher. Not like upload vedio for earning. I have a question that after this vedio how can to generate an image in 3D object for engraving with GRBL CNC 3018. Do you have my required info or link share with me for better understanding. Thanks dear.
I know this tutorial is 5 year ago but in 2021 Version 1.02 isn't allowing to put -50 in the HSB Adjust step. Is there a reason for this? Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Love all the post!
I know this is an older video but it's great. Now I have a question. How can I take this 3 part graphic and do Perspective on it? When I try it wants to separate it. If I group it, Perspective doesn't work. Help!!
awesome tutorial again! although the wood image you used, the link doesnt seem to be working anymore... nonetheless used a different wood image and it came out okay. not as good as the above but still happy
Nick... Could you make a video taking this technique one step further? Is it possible to apply a texture to the carved area? The area in the word carved is dark brown with enough opacity to see wood grain but I'm looking to also apply a texture to the word Carved. I laser engrave on wood and your technique in this video to simulate the engraving is very close to what I need to do... I need to add/apply a texture of thin uniform cut marks to the word Carved. Appreciate the help! Your content is awesome! Thanks,Steve
I am new to inskape and your tutorials are really helpful. Does anyone know how to do the opposite with the text, make it look like it stands out from the wooden background?
When I click Path > Difference, (at or about the 3:00 mark) the text becomes transparent and the wood shows through. I duplicated the image, created a rectangle to cover it, clicked the selection tool, sent the rectangle down a layer, held shift while I selected the text, selected Path > Difference, and the blue text disappears completely. It's nowhere to be found. I'm guessing nobody else had this problem, but I can't figure out where things are going wrong.
I did it! Nick I did it!! ='D Thank you very much Nick. And I found out it can be save in PDF format without losing any feature from the original SVG format.
It's even easier to do this if you use the Drop Shadow filter on the text and set the mode the Inner Cutout, it gives you an inset drop shadow and removes the text
Is there a specific reason for the text being so dark? If you remove the darker text layer it comes much closer to an actual wood carving. Thanks for the tutorial though, loved the shadow trick!
I just watched this tutorial and tried to follow along. My results weren't as nice as yours since the link to the wood did not work. I also tried to use my new design in my software for printing projects and it didn't load correctly. I use Cricut Design Space with a cutting machine to print then cut objects I have designed. This tutorial was wonderful however I still have questions. Thank you.
Very awesome tutorial Nick! =D I wonder if it can be save in PDF format? In some cases when I save something with shadows, it won't show in PDF format :(
These videos are great nick! I just created my first logo under your virtual tutelage and it turned out great. One questions is that I noticed that you don't use layers (or at least in the videos I've seen). Why is that? I found myself going back and wishing I could make certain elements disappear with out deleting them and layers would have been perfect for that. Just curious.
+Serf Thank you. Layers are a great tool in many scenarios. I got into a habit of not using them though for the sake of time efficiency. For me it was always quicker to just make the subject(s) transparent and work with the move up/down function. I'll try to work that into a tutorial though.
Hey Nick, So strange. Every time i duplicate the background and go to extension, raster, hsb adjust and set brightness to -50.0 my inkscape automatically shuts off. strange right? any idea why? It only has happened when i do this. Ive been following all of your videos step y step and do my own and this never happened any other time.
+Athena Just download the font, open the zip folder (I'm assuming you're using Windows or Linux), then open the font file. It should be either .ttf or .otf I think. Once opened, there should be a button somewhere that says "Install"
I have a computer with good specs, but still Inkscape crashes at the very same moment when clicking the HSB Adjust. This happens everytime, even with smaller values than -50.0. Strange...

For people who are here after 2021 : When you go to the HSB adjust, don't input 0, 0, -50 instead input 0, 100, 50. It will definitely work 👍
Thanks 👍
