    When I was 13 my grandfather started teaching me to run equipment,he had a old cat 12f knuckle buster and a old champion the cat was for finishing rock but he had me on the champion on our farm making watermelon beds and drain ditches there was no seat had to stand up so ever since then to this day I still stand running a grader I'm 49 now, and run a 12H cat just about the best machine cat ever made,

    If it's been drownded it'll never go BUT we'll see. The thing on the blower is the emergency stop and it WILL stop it no matter what. It shuts the air off to the blower. A 4-71 is 4 cylinders and 71 cubic inches displacement per hole. A 53 has 53 inches displacement per hole and is a smaller engine BUT they used to put a turbo on them and make dandy truck engines, usually 2 1/2 ton and van bodies. A 6-71 has six cylinders and aV-8 and a V-12 and so on until you get into double blocks and a bunch of pistons. HUGE deals for generators. They also make a 92series with 92 inches per hole and a 110-6 cylkinder and on up to train engines (EMD)'s GBWYall and that old 12 grader is a GOOD one!

      It’s nice to see another Detroit fan. You start getting into the 16v-653 sieries or the newer 20v-710 sieries beasts music to my ears modular mechanical works of art so much power at 800 rpm on governor load. So nice I could watch the top deck on one of those those all day every day

    • @lewiemcneely9143
      @lewiemcneely9143 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tracktorred7570 I always have been and all the EMD experience was around Norfolk Southern swapping cars at the local paper mill. I ran D8H's and 7E's with the lo speed motors and it was a heart throb all day long. The Brits had a locomotive engine that made a K's worth of horses at 900 revs with 4 cylinders. I thought that was NEAT to the excess. Napier Deltic was the maker I think. Worth watching..

    The latch on the intake was the emergency kill flap for runaway prevention.

      At the wastewater plant we had tanker trucks to haul the sludge off with Detroit 2 stoke sixes with that emergency cutoff, the regular drivers knew to just turn the ignition switch off to shut it down. The people who were supposed to be smart always used the kill button to turn it off then turn the ignition switch off. If I had to move one and it would crank for about 5 to 10 seconds without starting I knew I had to go open the hood to reset the flapper catch. Then it would start almost instantly.

    Another thing I forgot about was our old mixer had a 671 Detroit in it with a 12" exhaust that rusted in half flush with the hood and right in front of the steering wheel open cab I lived in fear of running that dam thing it was like a top fuel dragster motor in your ear all day even with ear muffs and ear plugs I still have all my family's old equipment and that mixer and still use it all I just spent the money for a muffler 🤣

    That’s in case it tries or succeeds on running away, usually it’s from the rack being stuck in the full throttle position. But any way it, closes a flap or butterfly to starve it for air.

    Detroit engine numbers were number of cylinders and the engine displacement. 453 is 4 cylinder, 53 cubic inches per cylinder. Also, those engines are very prone to the fuel rack sticking in the "wide open" position. Be very careful in your "will it starts?"

    I love these old start videos but in reference to your comment about people asking you the questions at the end of the day people need to understand that the operating cost of old steel exceeds the cost of a new machine and it’s increased productivity real fast. If it still operates maybe someone can use it on their own property or for parts for a restoration but they usually won’t effectively make you money anymore.

    • @jakealter5504
      @jakealter5504 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the availability of parts. My dad has a few old machines and they still make the majority of the parts for them. His oldest work machine is a 1974 Case 580B Backhoe and the only part on the machine that they don’t make anymore (aside from the engine which can still be rebuilt) is the battery cover, they still make the other parts

    • @michaelholderegger645

      There are still tens of thousands of old Cat 12s out there still making people money, and just like the one in this video that they used to pull the other one, those old cats always fire up and go, and they still make the parts for them.

    (what is that ? ) Its the same on all the older detroit`s , its the emergency stop trigger , its especially important if you turn the engine over backwards , it will run forwards and backwards , you dont want it to run backwards ever , immediately pull the emergency stop . You may have stuck injectors and pistons , you may also have 1 or more bent rods by now , and if you get it cranking it may run away if it starts because of stuck rack an injectors possible > make sure the emergency stop works its full travel easily .

    4-71 engines have 71 cubic inches per cylinder. I assume 4-53 engines have 53 cubic inches per cylinder. I worked on 71 series engines but not 53 series. The thing you pointed to early in the video is the air shutoff to kill the engine.

    Was that the trip for the "flapper" you were pointing at? The flap that closes off the air to the blower, more commonly called emergency stop. In the old trucks if you pulled the emergency stop you had to get out open the hood to reset it. I know it's easy when you're looking at them in person to tell the difference between the 53 series and the 71 series, but watching on TH-cam about the only way I can tell it is when you show the air box covers. The 71 has those big covers one for each cylinder and the 53 series doesn't.

    Hank, you're getting quite a bit of audio distortion. Are those mics feeding direct to the camera? Maybe there is some setting on the camera that will let you reduce the input level. You can probably reduce the volume in editing but that will not fix the clipped signal from over-driving the input. The mics are a definite improvement but they do need a little tweaking. P.S. -- I don't think a Crescent wrench will fix this problem! LOL

    Hank the next time you buy a box of Little Debbie cakes look at who owns the company. That little lever is an emergency kill to shut down the engine on the old Detroit engines. It stops the intake air flow. The old Detroit engines would sometime try to run away. My Grandfather used to run trucks with Detroit engines back when he hauled "our" Little Debbie cakes. 😱 😏😁🙌🎂🍩🍮🍥🍣👈😂😂. Yeah I have a 1980 GMC General with an 8V71 turbocharged Detroit engine and 13 spend transmission that was my Dad's. All the running gear is still great. It needs body work. I just haven't had time. May have told you before that my Dad owned and operated trucks from time he was 22 until 82 yrs old. He's 86 now and just enjoying his retirement. He says that age is simply just a number. Keep pushing your videos brother. We really enjoy watching them. Dad loves them too.

      That’s cool. Never knew that’s who owned it. You’re in like Flynn if you’re in that family. 👍
