Jamie is a great guest host.
Thanks!
@@Jamie.Laszlo You are a very gifted entertainer. It is a delight to watch you!
I agree!!
Jamie Rules 🤘
Never heard of either band or album. Love those!
Once again thank you Martin for opening my eyes to another real good record I never heard before (listening now)...I shall now re-pay you with a record you never heard before that you will love......"coming soon"!
Martin's books are chock full of stuff that's rare, he's a Metal encyclopedia!
Greetings from France .. so glad to hear about Manilla Road .. and so proud to hear Martin mention the french label "Black Dragon Records" which was back in the days one of my favourite record compagny (still owned tons of vinyls from this label : Chastain/CJSS, Cherry Bombz, Candlemass ...)
Chastain and CJSS are awesome.
Always enjoy the Fun house, so great to hear Pete and Martin together on this feature.
I worked for some promoters in Chicago in the 70s. THE HOUNDS were under the wing of one of them. Saw the showcase gig at " Parkwest", a mid-size venue in the Lincoln Park area. They opened for a lot of shows these promoters did. I still have my backstage passes . The 2nd album , to quote the promoter's wife " shipped lead" ( as in sank like a stone).
Popoff and Pardo are at it again but outside the Funhouse with their homework assignments. Always great to have Jamie step into hosting/ Not familiar with either album but thanks, Jamie, for the Hounds link. Listening to them at the moment and would definitely buy a CD but really like a two-fer reissue such as Pete mentioned. Thanks to Martin for bringing the viewers attention to this band.
Just listened to the first Hounds album on YT thanks to Jamie's link below.. what a great album!
Thanks for the new find
Love it when Jamie is on the show.
He always delivers!
Wow, Creatures of the night versus Black Tiger tomorrow. I will be planted in front of the screen
I'm 44 years old and a massive rock/metal guy and have never listened to Manilla Road. That is going to change now thanks to you guys!
Check out their 1986 album The Deluge
Great show... it's funny it was Martin's reviews in the 80s book that turned my onto Manilla Road
What a pleasant surprise to see Manilla Road featured! I'm in the process of getting into them now. I highly recommend the song Necropolis to newcomers to the band - and I also recommend Visigoth's cover of that song. Really tremendous! I have to emphasize that Manilla are a band worth persisting with - the vocals can be a bit off putting at first but the music is really rewarding - like discovering a treasure trove only a select few know about.
Interesting take Martin! A unique band as Pete says. Cool you can't remember the album and now it's an "8" for you today.
I jammed in a punk band in the mid 80s with the original drummer from the Hounds (John Horvath)
Great episode! Definitely, want to check out both bands
Wow, just checked out The Hounds, that's some cool stuff.
Who would have thought that all those albums and bands fronted by barking, growling creatures would be analysed, dissected, talked about in depth with so much intelligence and love by music historians and journalists. Just love that! Cheers!
I'm with Martin, we do need a liner-notes website. Another idea I had is a website where you can just scroll through album covers. Nothing else, just flipping through album art like you are in a record store.
Both pretty good albums. It's the only Manilla Road that I own, actually. I have both of the Hounds albums. Good stuff and great reviews, guys. Also, every time Pete goes for his Deep Purple cup I think he's drinking a candle. Thanks for the video, guys!
Thanks for highlighting these two bands ! Love the Hounds - years ago Vin Scelsa on WNEW Fm played these two albums. Agree w Pete and Martin - eh on the covers -,moth. Working on my cool, Angel are great - I hear Dictators, Pavlovs Dog, Charlie, Artful Dodger, Cheap Trick.
Glad to see Manilla Road getting some coverage, I’ve just been getting into them recently and quickly became a big fan. Such a unique band! Too bad they didn’t really get their due while Mark was alive but better late than never, it seems like they have quite the following among underground metal fans these days. I hope to get some of their albums on vinyl one day, they’re pretty pricey unfortunately. Hopefully they’ll get re-pressed with all the demand that’s out there.
Never heard of Hounds but they sound cool too, I’ll check out some of their stuff.
All in all a super cool show, thanks guys! 🤘🤘
I've been meaning to give them a listen, heard a lot about them but have not heard a lot of their music
@@jasonjames6383 I never listened to them either until about 6 months ago but they quickly became one of my favourite bands! They never put out a bad album in my opinion but I think almost any album from either the ‘80s or the ‘00s would be a great place to start (maybe not “Metal” though, that and the debut are more in a Hard Rock style…still good but different).
@@erikberg5363 I've had a listen to Open The Gates since my comment, and it's a great album. Need to listen to a few more.
@@jasonjames6383 Awesome, glad you enjoyed it! Happy listening 🤘🤘
Now I want to check out that band Hounds too.
I review books professionally and have for almost ten years. I cannot possibly remember books that I have read as recently as five years ago.
Thanks to Martin’s suggestion and Pete’s review I just ordered Hounds - Puttin’ On The Dog. I went out an searched this title and listened to samples. It sounds great. I also have to admit, I know this album cover. I can recall seeing it on record shelves back in it’s day. Thanks guys! I cannot wait to get this in the mail.
Terrific episode per usual!
A good show Pete. The homework assignment was interesting and Jamie is an excellent host. I know nothing about either band never even heard of them. I'm going to have to relisten to the show again and re-read the messages and hope I can figure out the names to be able to listen to them. Pete and Martin ought to be in the co-captins more often.
Manilla Road - Open The Gates (1985)
Hounds - Puttin’ On The Dog (1979)
@@erikberg5363 thanks Eric do you like them
@@melaniethurber5117 No problem! I’m a big metalhead and really like Manilla Road, never heard of Hounds but I’ll check them out!
@@erikberg5363 I'm going to check them out also. I don't know if I'm a metal person or not. But got to listen to them. Thanks for telling me
What a great episode! I always enjoy it when Martin and Pete discuss music. But Jamie is a great host!
The Hounds truly one of my hidden favs used to play it to death on 8 track back in the day. Loved it. Picked up both this one and their other one on vinyl along the way. Good choice Martin 🤘
Great episode guys, gonna check out both albums. Funny, Pete is 10 months older than me, but I have yet to forget things, my memory is like a trap, I remember everything and that’s good and bad.
Hi Jamie hope you are well, another awesome show.
Jamie, that shirt is amazing!
Great stuff! Manilla road is such a great and underrated band even though I have only heard their 80s classic stuff. It's a band that a lot of metal fans somehow undermine (including myself) even if we love them. I think open the gates is a really good although crystal logic is my absolute favourite. I do have to check Martin's pick though as I had never heard of them until now.
Where can I find Hounds? It sounds right up my alley.
th-cam.com/video/V8-O5pwRf_4/w-d-xo.html
Go look in thrift stores & dollar bins in record stores. That's where I found my copies .They are both long out of print. There is a 2014 UK CD release of their first album Unleashed, which is all original songs and my favorite of the two. But the album Pete reviewed has the covers which is probably why it wasn't re-released on CD (or was very limited--according to discogs there is no legitimate release of it).
Thanks!
If it is the same band the Hounds opened many concerts here in Louisville in the late 70s. Fun show as always Jamie, Martin and Pete.
Manilla Road has one of the strongest discography in metal genre.
Crystal Logic is my favorite of theirs. Everyone needs to hear it, as it’s the perfect underground album.
I love this show. Jamie I've seen you guest host a couple times when Pete is doing his homework. You've always done a great job. That's a lot of cassette tapes behind you. Martin you had 11,000 albums at one time. I had a little more than 500, and thought I was doing good. What do I know? The Hounds album sounds like something I would like. I'm going to look it up. Good episode. Thanks guys.
Thanks. And those are CDs behind me.
Thought I had it, just reordered
Support the truckers! They are standing up for our families futures!
Canadiens!
Jamie is a star 🌟
Kudos to Martin! 👍 He didn't have to admit that he forgot the album. He could have easily said something like "Just like I wrote back then in my review." but he's honest and I like that. 😀👍
Can't wait for Pete's Tull review
Good grief Martin 18,000 cds and 5,000 vinyl thats incredible 👏
And on top of that, he mentioned some days ago thay he does not play them a lot, rather listen digital music service, if I am not mistaken
Pete - would love to see another show maybe based on long songs? With Martin “wouldn’t listen to that at any length” Popoff and Chris “hate all that jamming stuff” Allo maybe looking at long songs they hate? Maybe songs picked most likely things you like so comedy gold. Keep up the good work.
How about a manilla Road ranking?
I managed to find HOUNDS/Unleased on cd(cool album cover,cool chick)I enjoy it.Never heard the second one.Never heard any Manilla Road.Always enjoy you guys,no matter what the topic.Jamie is a good host, too.Good job,as usual.Of course I heard of Hounds,because of Martin🤘
I'm 71 and still remember half my name.
The Hounds album I loved as a bargain bin item. Sadly haven't been able to get it on cd. Great pick Martin.
all music given credits if not the actual linear notes
Jamie killed it. 👍
Lets Go Mets or the Polar Bear version....LFGM!
Did Martin say he owns 18,000?
Whew!
Great episode, btw.
Gonna join Jamie's new FB page.
GREAT😀👍👍
Jamie where is the link to your new Facebook page please ?
It keeps disappearing evey time I post it. But it's called Let's Get Physical.
I don't see the link for Laszlo's Facebook page.
I keep posting it and it keeps disappearing.
It's called Let's Get Physical. But even when I just mention the name my comment disappears. I dunno what's going on.
I found it and sent a request.
manilla road might have been a bigger band if they weren't called manilla road
Martin you would not buy because you have so many physical. but would you buy it if you didn't have a big collection.
