    FYI, these are not 'adverts'. In the UK these are termed as 'Public Information Films'. ALL are hard hitting. They are about public safety, be it in or outside of the home. They are aimed at adults and are to raise awareness of 'safety' situations. I think I am correct in saying they would be shown after the '9pm watershed', when it is reasonable to expect young children to be in bed and not see these films, they are for adults.

    • @AnimeManiac1987
      @AnimeManiac1987 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      you would think that these would be shown after the watershed but that is not true. prime time was the most effective time and several was shown throughout the day, in full view of kids. I know because I saw all of these and worse as a kid and many have traumatised me and influenced my adult life

    • @Iluvantir
      @Iluvantir ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@AnimeManiac1987 Not to sound unfeeling, but good. The messages stuck with you. I was a child during the 80s, and these "short films" are tame compared to things I used to watch. I remember a fair number that were specifically aimed for children to see and understand: green-cross code for crossing roads, many others as well. They stick with you. But no, it's not trauma. It frightens you, but it's far from trauma. The idea that it's "traumatic" for you is a result of the current day nonsense and "safe-space" bull: certain things are meant to illicit the fear response: fight or flight. That is a good thing. Fear saves lives. Fear is a friend so long as you know what to do when you feel Fear.
      Trauma is what the police, ambulance service, fire service, armed service experience. Watching a close friend, a brother in arms, die horribly: that's trauma. Trauma is watching your loved one die choaking to death because you never "found the time" to learn simple first aid techniques. That's trauma. Trauma is knowing you could have done something to help but ended up being useless.
      Trauma is not "I saw a scary advert on TV in-between watching my cartoons."
      The bad use of language strips words of their power. I ask that you learn to NOT do that. Instead: be glad the adverts you did see have stuck with you. They might help save your life or your loved ones.

    They serve their purpose. A couple of them were relatively tame and likely chosen to balance it out a bit. For a people that do 'subtle' as well as the Brits, they can be blunt and to the point when required. Be interesting to see how they change to reach the newer generations.

    • @Iluvantir
      @Iluvantir ปีที่แล้ว

      We're subtle when we need to be, and blunt when we need to be. This current generation? We're blunt with them. When it comes to "life and death", we call a spade a spade, and be damned anyone's "safe-space".
      If it is "national-life or death" like in the War? That's where our subtle understatement comes up: if something is beyond a single person's ability to control, we just get on with things and subtly reference how "shite" the world currently is. "Bad night last night, wasn't it Jeff?" = "Oh yeah. Rained terrible as we were putting out that house fire from those bombs."
      But when it IS under YOUR ability to control or help or deal with? We get in your face and simply say it. Hurt feelings? Don't give a shit - if your feelings being bruised means you've changed your smoke alarm battery and thus saved your 5 year old's life... we're happy hurting your feelings.

Enough to do CPR etc. It's well worth learning first aid, and maybe even becoming a volunteer. As a volunteer you do learn quite a bit more than the basic first aid, and can go on to do ambulance (ETA/EMT) training as well. Buit whether you are at a big sports or music event or a small church or village fete, school or town bonfire night, it's always very rewarding. To give a little context , on our tv adverts have to be in distinct breaks , either in intervals in or between programmes and can't interrupt them . These are a mix of Public information messages and Charity adverts . There is also a 9 pm. "Watershed " after which more adult content is allowed . The PI. films are even shown occasionally on the BBC between programmes .
    I think our news and Political programmes do cover World events in more depth . The silent ad was probably due to copyright on the song . With the NHS whilst there is a choice to have chemo , the option is always there without financial consideration . The one thing they have in common is they are effective at making their point , and do prompt contributions or volunteers .

      @stephaniefitzpatrick3912 ปีที่แล้ว

      Okay the idea of asking permission to a DEAD person to help save their life actually tickles me beyond words. Always ask for consent if they are able to communicate and understand the situation for sure. Life or death scenarios like delivering cpr is different.
      While it is not common in Europe the idea of being sued for attempting to save somebody's life is still a fear that many have.
      Any judge worth their weight will put life over limb and generally appreciate the nuisance of you trying to help. Caused minor injuries while trying to perform cpr? Still better than them being dead.
      More people die from a lack of intervention of first aid than are sued for their troubles. Perhaps it is the suing culture in America that contributes but in Europe it's considered absurd. In fact, some countries consider you liable if you see someone in a life threatening position and DON'T report it or try to administer aid.
      And personally, at the end of the day, while I'm sure being sued is very stressful I think the stress of watching somebody die while I do nothing is worse. Being able to prevent a death but not acting out of fear of legal repercussions would be harder for me to live with.
      Also would most likely to help a friend or family than a stranger who would in theory be less likely to sue too. It's a useful skill you hope to never have to use!

    One of my best friends was a Barnardo child, back in the early fifties. He was adopted eventually by our church organist at our village in Suffolk. I’ve seen them all and more here in the U.K., If they touch you in any way they’ve done their job, As dark as the subjects are light needs to be shone on these subjects, It affected you so now you’ll be checking your smoke alarm regularly and that advert did it’s job by causing that reaction in you, The others appealed to your sense of empathy which again is their job done well, These kind of adverts have been around for years here check out the ones from the 70’s as public information films they are eye openers too and still kind of relevant today, Great reaction from you and genuine reaction too, Have a great and safe day.

    It’s not the same watching these one after another in a compilation, you’ve gotta imagine you’re watching something you’re enjoying and then it goes to the adverts and there’s a chocolate bar and then a beer advert and then “BANG” Sarah’s Story completely against the grain, they don’t quite have the same impact when they all set the tone together as a top 10. Mind you this video is impacting it’s just they are powerful individual adverts in amongst “product/selling” adverts.
    Rainbows, unicorns, magical flowers, DEATH, beer, clothing…..
    I think they bring to life the reality just long enough you can’t ignore it.

    We don’t have kids (entirely by choice) but that clock change day hit so hard. So every clock change day my husband changes all the clocks AND tests the smoke alarms.
    Every year the clock goes back (autumn/fall) he not only tests them, but they also get fresh batteries because Winter is when a lot more fires happen; fires & candles are used more, decorations go up for Halloween & Christmas, you have more people around in the house, you’re cooking loads more... accidents happen... Christmas trees get knocked over by pets, new electronics come into the home...
    BUT don’t just press the button to test, my husband checks the button, but also checks their reaction to actual smoke. He takes a fire proof bowl around the house with a small piece of burning wood, he wafts the smoke towards the sensors to check they all react.
    ALSO if you have any real fires in your home, get your fireplaces, flues and chimneys checked regularly!
    If you’re not sure how often, check your local fire service website, if they don’t have info there, call them (NOT on the 999/911 line) your chimney is full of soot, SOOT IS FLAMMABLE! a chimney fire grows in the dark, it grows faster than you realise or can smoulder all day and combust in the night.
    Trust me your insurance cannot everything back to rights, your insurance cannot replace loved ones, beloved pets, it cannot replace photographs & important paperwork, grandpa’s old guitar, grandma’s wedding dress...
    But ALWAYS REMEMBER! The best way to survive a house fire is to NEVER HAVE A HOUSE FIRE! Be Vigilant, be Careful and teach your kids the same!

    We need to bring these kinds of educational shorts/PSAs back! I was scared of railway tracks, electricity pylons and substations, quarry pools, messing with matches, fireworks and I crossed the road carefully. Till I was an adult! We did however still throw ourselves off the local castle walls playing 'Dead Man's Fall' because the TV hadn't been warned us about that, specifically! So it's possible I guess, that we wouldn't have survived our crazy, outdoor, free range and irresponsible, childhoods without them.
    Also, Emma Thompson (Elena and Maria) did an excellent job of raising awareness of the real lives that too many young women are still forced into today. Young women who had simply wanted to travel, work and learn. Led to two houses very close to me at the time being raided and shut down. People knew prostitution was happening there, but not that those young women we saw going in on the daily were likely not there voluntarily. It made us take action. Ten young Eastern European women were rescued as a result. Thank you Emma!

All the celebrities were covering their eyes in the pictures to suggest how society was wilfully blind to what was going on. I remember footballer Alan Shearer and the Spice Girls were involved. St John's Ambulance: they train people in first aid. You get a qualification for X amount of time per cert, showing you can give first aid in different situations. Different training for different things. I was registered with them for 5 years in a prior place of work and was one of the First Aid Responders there. They cover everything from simple cuts and scraps to nasty shit like the second vid. Air-ways, pulse, CPR, you name it. Doesn't make you a paramedic or anything... but it can mean the difference between watching someone die or not.

    I grew up in a fire station. My dad was in charge of every fire station in a 1000 km² area.he was on call 24/7 and had to go to any accident requiring a cut out. We went everywhere in his emergency response vehicle (shopping parties, family events ECT) i grew up seeing my dad covered in blood and guts. Went to my first cut out at about 10 years of age. When dad got a call we just had to go and sit in the back of the car and read a book.
    The firemen often said that repeat hoons, petrol heads should be ordered by the courts to attend half a dozen serious accidents and get up close and personal to the scene. To hear the screaming and crying of severely injured, scared and sometimes dying patients (especially kids) My dad was a very calm, competent, respected leader and was in charge of EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE at the scene. He was more than willing to get his hands dirty if necessary to save lives and to ensure the safety of those involved in the rescue. He attended hundreds of serious accidents but still got a little shook up seeing kids hurt or killed. He used to say screaming was in someway good because at least you knew they were alive. I challenge anyone to see what he did and still think reckless driving is perfectly safe and fine. Sometimes we all need a little wake up call.

    No, they are comparing numbers. Cancer has one of the highest mortality rates, they are saying almost as many die from things such as choking each year and not enough people know the Heimlich maneuver, instead having to wait for an ambulance! It was part of their ad campaign to highlight their free first aid courses. They also had one for drownings, and there was another but can’t remember now what it was. Basically they were all things that with training from the St John’s ambulance you could save a life!

    Not even two minutes in and I remember the first advert. Its bit inaccurate now, least for Scotland anyway as a new act came into force last year (I think) on February requiring all houses to have linked smoke alarms and a heat sensor for the kitchen. Said "smart alarms" have a lithium battery who's lifespan is around 10 years. This was in response to the Grenfell Tower incident.
    Please remember to test your alarms and change the battery if it's not built in. Perhaps even change your smoke alarms to the current standard being used.
