I did that once. The mimic was the house, but also the items in the house were baby mimics. So the hat rack in the room, a chandelier in the hall, or even a dresser is a mimic that will attack the group. Even finding a long dinning table with plates an food on it, and the group finds the plates an utensils attacking them as they try to eat or stay in the room too long, before the table also attacks body slamming targets. The idea was of a village calling for investigations into a abandoned manor that groups would go missing in, but finding no sign of why they went missing like bodies or such in the manor.

You forgot that the "good" mimics will actually trade for alcohol in the old game.
Other than that, the quickest way to make a group paranoid is to get jumped by a mimic. A chest a mimic...or is it? Just kidding it's actually that boulder right next to the chest. Points for pulling off a house mimic, because that just gets the players to burn down every single house they come across.

In our campaign we had our team befriend a greater mimic because we could see that it was a mimic based on it imitating a statue of one of our more self-centered party member's busts (yes bust. He got one carved of himself the pompous bastard) and it imitated a bust completely different party member.
The bust was of our skeleton, whom carved one of himself before his undeath and we just prepared a bunch of spells and attacks before the mimic just went "hey wait a second, we can talk this out" in common.
His name is Vinny and he often acts as home defense in exchange for free rent and food. He's one of our most prominent side characters

My DND meet a mimic in a dungeon. They were rather smart when dealing with it. They tested the chest first. Then lured it into another room in front of a sleeping guard monster. So if the boss called it they run right into it. It did take out one of the smaller boss for them. Then they saw it again at a gift shop working as a security guard who ate anyone who tried to rob the shop.

One of the 'greater mimics' I have in a current game pretends to be a covered wagon. Unlike other Mimics, it has learned patience... it doesn't just stick the first thing to come along, and waits till your all alone. It even mastered its form well enough so it can function as a wagon, if your silly enough not to question why a perfectly good wagon is sitting abandoned at the crossroads.
I hope to keep up the charade for a few weeks, long enough for players to forget they even have a wagon.

Made a one-shot story in my main campaign where the party was on their way to some ruins and came across "The Wayfarer's Inn". It was a travelling inn that would set up in remote areas and house all sorts of people, from villains to heroes, some monster/beast folk, etc. . .
The inn as you have no doubt already guessed was in fact a greater mimic, one who's insides were filled with other lesser mimics for the furniture, and shape shifters for the staff.
The inn was neutral territory run by a very powerful wizard whom was killed by one of the patrons. So the party is tasked to find and expose the killer before the inns residents decide to just eat everyone.
The whole thing is this (IMO) awesome mix of Clue, Monster house, and Hotel California.
The party loved it for how out there the one-shot was, and they got to keep one of the mimics as a pet/travelling chest. :D

Most interesting mimic I've ever heard about was the Luggage from Discworld.
Pratchett said he was inspired by a woman with a suitcase on wheels. But when you read about it luring a hero with gold and later swallowing people whole, you know what he was thinking.
Also the best mods I ever used for the Elder Scrolls had a Luggage.

    • @McDonaldWilliamT
      @McDonaldWilliamT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Eeeeh. The Luggage isn't really what I would call a Mimic however. It's a magical construct made from wood taken from a sapient tree. While it can manifest teeth, hundreds of tiny feet to move around, and occasionally a tongue. It can't really shift it's physical form to anything other than a large wooden chest. That and the aforementioned teeth and occasional tongue are heavily implied to still be made of wood in some way. It also has some rather interesting other abilities, like its internal space is probably some kind of pocket dimension, any clothing placed inside of it usually come back cleaned, dried and pressed ECT.

I once played a campaign where a litch hid in the center of a forest and created a curse around his base that drew in mimics, that’s not the worst part though. The hundreds of mimics would get increasingly more powerful the closer they got to the fortress . By powerful I mean they could imitate more things. The mimics on edge of the Forrest could only imitate logs and rocks while the mimics closer to the litch’s fortress could imitate things like packs of wolves or the grass or even party members.
There was one really great moment where we spotted a bear roaming around and hid in the bushes while we watched it. A deer ran past the bear and it’s side split open to reveal a mouth that promptly ate the deer. The party was so paranoid that we killed most large animals on site if we where suspicious of them from that point onward.

One of my favorite dungeon ideas that I wish to run one day is the Mimic Queen dungeon. An influx of Mimics are being found on the outskirts of a large town the adventurers visit. Once the cave has been found, they delve in to find areas with mimics, ropers, and a goblin colony who wear knives on their feet and head to protect themselves. The goblins will also have magic items that should be disproportionately useful for such a small tribe.
Getting to the center of the dungeon, the adventurers find a ritual site. Dead bodies litter then ground and in the center is a dais with a massive stone and iron cage hanging above ready to engulf the whole ritual. On the dais are Mimic “eggs.” Young mimics too small to pass as anything more than a shoe. Once the party gets close, unsurprisingly, the dais turns into a fairly large mimic. It would seem the people wanted to try to capture and breed mimics for some purpose. As the battle rages, two adventurers get grabbed by the tendrils. As they’re pulled in, there is a loud impact, like 2 dozen hammers slamming against a wall. The party looks up and the giant cage drops, crushing the mimic dais and it’s brood, revealing itself as the true Mimic Queen. The bars invert to long, stone covered tentacles, the cage roof splits into a massive maw, and, on its back, dozens upon dozens of mimic eggs.
Have fun with this idea and, done right, your players will never trust a chair, bed, door, or table ever again.

unknown organism I’m planning on running a mimic queen one shot in a little bit where they enter a dungeon that is mainly just one long path with very few branches. As they get deeper they find better and better loot but also acid starts dripping from walls and stuff like that. Eventually they reach the end only to awaken the whole dungeon and for pretty much all of the loot they got during the dungeon to burst out into small mimics. The end of the dungeon is a time based escape from the dungeon which is now on around a 45 degree angle from where it was originally so everything is difficult terrain and they are getting forced out by a massive stomach acid wave and a small army of mimics only to have to slip out the entrance before it closes and they are swallowed.

Used a mimic once on a group that were poking around a portion of a derelict underground highway. They had been beaten over the head by hobgoblins, and found a cart deserted at a waypoint. Used it to carry their supplies, loot from the hobgoblins, a prisoner they had taken, and the wounded rogue. They didn’t find the prisoner or the rogue after they came back from clearing out a partial cave in.
The rogue was very good and didn’t give anything away until the group finally realized the cart was about 20% larger than before

You left out my favorite ambush monster: the Cloaker. It is somewhere between a mimic and darkmantle. When Active it appears like a flying furry manta ray. When resting it looks like a heavy fur-lined [or sometimes soft leather] cloak with the barbel/horns of the ray forming the clasps. The base form waits in wardrobes and treasure hordes for adventurers to put it on. It then strikes, enveloping them like a cocoon.
In ravenloft there is a species that can form a symbiotic relationship, It feeds by healing its host's wounds, glowing brightly in the process.

Mimics also exist in FFXIV. In these procedurally generated dungeons called "deep dungeons" if you try to open one and don't kill it in time, it shrinks your hp pool by a percentage and leaves a nasty damage over time effect on you that lasts for 9 minutes. Nasty little things.

As a DM, my favorite homebrewed dungeon was a labyrinth of nothing but mimics and mimic-like monsters created by a crazed archmage who transplanted his mind/soul into a humanoid mimic. I called it the Living Labyrinth, and I took no small amount of sadistic glee when my group of veteran players had a hard time due to walking in blind. And for those who are wondering, they didn't bother to investigate the well-known, but highly deadly dungeon in the town about a day's travel away from said dungeon, where they had spent several days stocking up on weapons, armor, and other provisions, even after offering up several opportunities to do so.

I heard a theory that all the weird object Pokemon are like mimics. They're learning to hunt humans and figured out what stuff we like to be around, so they've learned how to take that stuff's form and wait until a human comes by and lets their guard down.
Laugh all you want, but I heard about a guy from Alola who got eaten by ice cream.

We had a player that got cursed to turn into a mimic, ended up tricking some Kobolds to think that he had always been there, even when moving and attacking the other Kobolds, they just thought it was a normal chest that sometimes ate them. They even got some cool buffs for eating certain things (Like before, they had eaten a rat and got a nat 20 on con so if they ate a rat, they healed slightly), and if they were able to convince themselves something was a rat (Required a roll) they could get the same benefit.

Oh God I'm going to steal that statue idea. Just imagine: the homeless population begins to slowly dwindle in a major city but the guards turn a blind eye because of a lack of bodies and, hey, less homeless in the streets. That is until people's pets, a few guards, and even a few runaway children disappear. Thus the party gets begged to solve their disappearences, leading eventually to a massive stone statue garden depicting heroes from ages past each carved by a mysterious artisan hundreds of years ago. What is quickly revealed is a mimic had replaced one about a hundred years ago and ever so slowly grew until it comprised the entire stone garden...
    GOD that'd be RAD

I like to homebrew stuff, and just yesterday I homebrewed a pet mimic.
It is smarter than most, so I gave it 7 Int and the ability to understand common. It also had a serious addiction to candies, so it got a lot of cavities and had to have his teeth removed, poor guy. He also gained a bit of weight, so he has a skate board to try and encourage exercise. Hasn't been working, but at least he's a bit faster.
