    SR-71 footage: pilot Terry Papass and reconnaissance system officer John Menzi. Seeing them in SR-71 cockpit is incredible. That aircraft was unlike any other in the world: part aircraft, part spaceship. A truly amazing aircraft and amazing men on bord.

    Credit is given to Mr. Northrop for helping to end the cold war. I've heard that same attribution given to the U.S. Navy's construction of a 600 ship fleet, including, nuclear subs, and 10 nuclear carriers.
    This is quite an old video, as it apparently predates the selection of the F-22 over the F-23, which occurred in 1991

I imagine you’re probably talking about the HO229. 🙄 The USAAF and a fair number of other countries were also designing and flying flying wing aircraft in the 40’s. The USAAF had several examples and variations by the time they captured or even knew about the 229. Care to take a guess who designed those flying wings? 🙄🙄

    The biggest problem with the A-12 and SR-71 is that they had serious leaks until they reached speed. This was because they had to be designed for high speed, which friction will often cause expansion of metal materials.... so they made an aircraft that would leak until it reached operation speeds. This was one of my favorite aircraft growing up as a child but it makes sense as to why the program had to end.

    Narrator sounds just like the usual 70's Cold War voice with a modern B-2 in the video, seems odd. Obviously the SR-71 is not a bomb pooper, but that's an idea. Imagine a mach 4 bomber that doesn't look like a bone and actually works near the deck at mach 4 with stealth (good luck keeping the anti-radar radiation absorbing paint on it though).

    A lot of incorrect information such as the use of titanium in the SR-71. Only the leading edges and other high temperature areas were titanium the rest was composites and alloys. The altitude is wrong as is the speed, altitude was 85,069 feet and speed 2,193.2 MPH. The MIG-25 holds the absolute altitude record of 123,520 feet. The blackbird does hold the sustained altitude record and speed record but the info in this film is not quite correct.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had to check your claim. That is a very interesting, but inaccurate metric.
      The base unladen weight of the B-2 is 160,000 pounds. Multiple that by 16 ounces per pounds and the current price of gold at $1489 per ounce yields $3.8 billion. The unit cost of the B-2 is $787 million and its amortized cost is $2.1 billion. So, the B-2 costs more than half its weight in gold (outrageous, but not 3X)

      Not quite as simple as that.
      The YF-12, assuming that's what you were referring to, had a completely different airframe, and a completely different electronics fit, including a powerful radar and four weapons bays. The SR-71 just didn't have the space for those, or the right electronics to make them work.

      I didn't mean to give the impression that I had served as a member of any armed forces - I haven't ever served in any military.
      I was happy that some of the things I know were useful to you in expanding your own knowledge about these awesome, flying beasts. It's always cool to find out new things about stuff that excites you and I was pleased to have been able to help - that's what I was trying to say.
      I do think it's very important that those who put themselves at risk, or even make the ultimate sacrifice to keep the rest of us safe are honoured appropriately and a big part of that is never trying to take any of their glory for one's self, even by accident.
      It's something that's at the front of my mind right now. A lot of people don't really seem to have noticed, but we're fast approaching one *_hundred_* years since the end of The First World War.
      I work in a shop and right now we're all trying to figure out the best and most respectful way to mark the eleventh of November.

    The SR-71 was supposed to be the RS-71 for reconoesis or how ever you spell that word lol and speed! The F-117 don’t make no sense being it’s not a Fighter plane but a stealth bomber! Although E for electronic. But I’ve seen at a Blue Angeles show growing up in Gulf Breeze Florida were the #1pilot lived in my nieborhood was the B1B-lancer which flew by over the speed of sound which is a beautiful aircraft over the beach on Pensacola Beach Florida.The F-117E makes since because it’s flown off of the electronic’s because it’s very unstable. The pilot can’t fly it without the electronics. I thought the F-16 fighting Falcon was hard to fly being my uncle retired as a general flying the F-16 and A-10 which he flew in desert storm!

      Texas Ray -im guessing u mean a b2.well that was the original modlel,I believe it was called 449 or 446 and it was Jack Northrop,s original design.thw first 2 protypes were flying wings,the first was propeller driven,the second jet powered.also they had vertical stabilizing fins.but at the time there wasn't the advanced flight control computers that there are today. So they were very hard to fly!.they were so unstable that the air force scrapped the flying wings program altogether,and had all Northrop flying wings destroyed.of course computers and technology improved and the need for a stealth aircraft to get into enemy airspace without being detected was deemed top priority.the government called for 7 aircraft designers to design the first stealth aircraft.and the b2,f117,and yf22 (raptor) were born.and now the f35!!!.but who knows what crazy stuff they are working on now,and which u may see a prototype flying around(just like u and the original flying wings design!!!

    The Soviets have a pretty good areal industry, but with the US industrial power combined with German advances, lead to the US having a priority in stealthy infiltrating Soviet airspace, while the Soviet's job was to detect them.
    No wonder Russia's SAM systems are monsters to jets

      Ken.
      This documentary was originally released as a VHS cassette. It was later released as a DVD but that was simply a straight transfer from the video.
      Essentially this documentary is over 20 years old (from memory) and this TH-cam video might just be a transfer from a video or DVD.
      The sound wasn’t brilliant on the original, and has just got worse by being copied.

    I was going to watch this till I realized that the person posting the video doesn't know what they are talking about. Calling the SR-71 a stealth bomber is like calling the F-15 Eagle a cargo plane.

      yeah but it has to be very sensitive that it also picks up every object in the sky so it's really hard to distinguish between billion dollar warplanes from clouds and birds. Stealth died in 1999.

    So the US has a great need to be able to violate the airspace of other nations at will in case we might want to topple their government or something?
    Could it be that the arms industry has something to do with this video?

    The F-117 doesn't have the high speed cruise of the B-2??? The F-117 has a higher cruising speed than the B-2! What are you guys smoking there? Your so-called facts are all screwed up! Just show the videos and stop trying to act smart.

      Monster LMA None of those planes are computer designed to make every angle on the plane the least radar reflective, these are old airplanes. Black paint does not mean stealth. Sorry for late reply

      really?...show me where the SR-71 was shot down by an enemy missile?....or the B1-B for that matter?...and both have been in hostile air space.

    • @slickstrings
      @slickstrings 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stealth is not PURELY about radar reflection. Stealth encompasses all aspects of detect-ability. Heat signature, sound, visual. Black paint, night missions. Also, you might see that the b1b has a very blended body. Obvious edges and joints are big radar reflectors.
      Its engine air inlets are also shaped to prevent radar reflecting off the engine face.
      Basically, it is a bomber with many stealth aspects in the design. and does have a small radar cross section for its size as a result.

    SR-71 doesn't use ramjets.
    Again, do some research!!!!

    • @fjalics
      @fjalics 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did not say it was a ramjet. They described it as a hybrid that acts like a turbofan at low speeds, and a ramjet at high speeds.

    • @robertwalker8964
      @robertwalker8964 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the SR-71 uses a duel purpose type of engine that's why the moveable spikes at the front of the engines at lower speed the engines operate like any other turbine jet but when the speed increases the spikes move an the engines become ramjets better try again
