    Ummm....after Hector killed Max, Don Eladio tells Gus - "The only reason you are alive and he is not is because I know who you are. But understand, you are not in Chile anymore". So there was something in the past that saved Gus, not because Don Eladio needed him in the future for anything....

    • @prankd8101
      @prankd8101 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +134

      That makes sense. I kinda think that his name isn’t even gus due to this quote from eladio and the fact that Hank couldn’t pull his name up in the records for chile

      There’s a fan theory that he was a high ranking officer working for the Chilean government in the past. Killing him would not be a smart move.

      Also explains why someone even as skilled and experienced as Mike can’t find out Gus’ real identity. This fan theory is what I personally believe in but it could be just be one of those “left to interpretation” scenarios.

    Uh.. i could tell by body language and guses never ending rage that it was his boyfriend/life partner that was killed. I never needed other clues.. knew it the second i saw it.. I'm sure most people did. When he later says "a man provides for his family"... he meant everything he was doing was a means of providing revenge for the love of his life..

      It's amazing Josh that so many people don't spot that Gus lost his life partner. It's like an IQ test. It was blatantly clear they were a couple
      And Gus, the sheer long term vindictiveness from a ruthless man against Hector - is definite proof of the relationship status " If only I could cause you the pain you've caused me " - James Franco

      @FantasyVisuals I totally agree.. as a matter of fact, before it was confirmed in better call Saul, I got in 2 separate arguments on threads about it. Both said "you gay guys always think others are gay"... and not that it matters.. I'm not gay . I'm just observant as many people are. I explained that it was extremely obvious they were a couple. And that homophobic rants don't make it less of a fact. Myself and others figured it out INSTANTLY. I know in my heart that people who were denying it online.. there were many discussions about it.. were denying out of some weird political reason. But LONG before better call saul.. those who can read a situation knew at the very moment his partner was shot.

      @@joshythehand2960I think you're right, but the whole body language thing is a bit silly. It would be pretty easy think that Max was something of a brother to Gus, although obviously it's more than that, it wouldn't be ridiculous for people to come to other conclusions. It's just a scene from a TV show, someone's opinion on it isn't necessarily emblematic of something bigger.

    • @gogetavsvegito
      @gogetavsvegito 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@joshythehand2960I wouldn’t say it’s too obvious at first. Gus was somewhat of a philanthropist who put people through school, we see that with Max, Gale, and the Doctors who would save his life later on. They all mention that it was Gus who put them through school, so to me I assumed he was somewhat of a Robin Hood helping out the less fortunate who took max under his wing, just as Walter did to Jesse. Losing a protege is like losing a son.

  • @saberserpent1134
    @saberserpent1134 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +86

    Between the "Santiago Incident" and his connections to Peter Schuler, it's fairly easy to infer that he held a military position of some authority.
    Either way, shooting Max was a stupid, short-sighted decision, creating a long-term enemy over a slight that could have been settled by taking a beating or offering to cut a finger to prove loyalty.
    That would have been more than enough for the slight of "slinging drugs to gangsters who sell other drugs".
    I did think it was odd he let Eladio fall into the pool.. almost like he didn't even want to touch him, regardless of the hatred.

    I've always interpetrated in a more simple explanation. Don Eladio had to make an example out of them, they've insulted him. He track their background, as everyone in that position would do. He knew by a fact, somehow, that Gus was really a criminal and was there to make business. On the other hand, he probably had not been able to do the same with Max. So killed the one he didn't knew anything about it, and could easily being a cop, an infiltrated.
    It is how this business works: zero tolerance to "outsiders". You just don't talk about business with a boss and walks free without having minimun "credibility".
    That's where the "i know who you are" came front. it was just a way to say: "I choose you to live because you are who you say you are".

      When Eladio asked Gus why he should be kept around when only one of them cooked the meth, I think he was floating the idea of being willing to keep them both, if they had actually come up with a good comeback, something like what Mike Ehrmantrout did when he came to demand the 50 000 bucks from Hector and said he was just going to kill him if he didn't get the 50k.
      He didn't kill Gus obviously because of his background. But if Gus wasn't so significant, I think he would've either killed them both or just kept Max because he was the chemist.

    I noticed the smouldering sexual tension between the two characters but never realised that they had been lovers.
    Hetcor Salamancer is definitely a sausage jockey, anyone can spot that .. it highlights the amazing scriptwriting throughout the entire episode.
    However, close scrutiny will reveal that many of Frings men are bummers ... Mike Ermantrouts and Tyrus Hodge are both gay ... note secretive winks, a shy smile here and there from Tyrus, and the longing stares.
    It's no secret Walter White was to be openly bisexual but Bryan Cranston was violently opposed to the planned graphic sex scenes between himself and Aaron Paul.

    In my interpretation, Eladio does not care about the quality of his product unless it can make him more money. So when they talk about how cocain doesn't suite the way of the world, it's almost a direct insult to his product and by extension his business.
    So when Max starts his speech about Gus being a business genius... Its almost as if Eladio sees Max as Gus's product.
    It's (in my opinion) the equivalent of seeing a kid with a cooler toy than you, so you're either jealous of the toy and get a better one, or you smash their toy to make the kid cry. He wanted Gus to feel hurt for insulting his business, and thus, made the only person he trusted "broken product".

    Cuz Gus was more useful than Max

  • @originoflogos
    @originoflogos 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The cartel had Max killed and not Gus because Gus was involved in the Pinochet regime in Chile. How can we glean this?
    1. Gus is a highly intelligent and ordered and sturdy man to a severe degree-one could say he’s stiff in his constantly straight posture and methodological tendencies to everything. This kind of behavior and demeanor would be needed for a man involved in a totalitarian regime.
    2. Hector dismissively calls Gus the “generalissimo” when talking on the phone to either Bolsa or Eladio. This connects to the scene in which Hector kills Max and Eladio tells Gus they spared him because they knew who he was in Chile. This is a way to show dominance to a literal war criminal and that Gus’s talents should be avoided when dealing with the Cartel.
    3. Hank interrogates Gus about his missing identity as a Chilean citizen. It’s obvious Gus had his documentation as a general in the Pinochet regime destroyed. His surgical attention to covering his tracks proves this.
    Yes, Gus was undoubtedly involved in the Pinochet regime. And I’m glad the writers left in clues for us to decipher this because it’s more unnerving to leave it up to people who are actually paying attention to connect the dots!
