Hawaii lawmakers banned safe consumer grade novelty fireworks like firecrackers sparklers and fountains. The ban, however, did not lessen the demand for fireworks. Instead, many people started purchasing fireworks from the black market, which specializes in dangerous, professional-grade pyrotechnics. If the goal was to increase public safety the Hawaii lawmakers utterly failed.
Sounds to me like the Hawaiian people who choose to break the laws are the failures. They are criminals breaking the law….they are the failures. What a stupid comment. Lawmakers failed because people are criminal minded? Utter stupidity. 🙄
Cured it with my brain? You obviously don't have one. Every story about this incident you make the same comment. You think playing illegal fireworks is an appropriate response to disagreeing with banning fountains and sparklers. Even if I take away your fireworks people with brains do not turn to something illegal. You really need to make noise on NYEve, see your two hands? Clap loudly. Use your brain like your user name suggests.
No one will ever turn in those who are purchasing, or setting off illegals in fear of retaliation. They can make all the laws they want, but how can it be enforced if HPD is short staffed, and if a neighbor sends in the video of their neighbor setting off illegal fireworks, they will be scared of retaliation once those guilty parties see what angle those videos are taken from. This is going to be one hard law to enforce.
The person who blame was the one purchased so many illegal fireworks must take all responsibility , did they know the safety, stored so many at house same as carrying a bomb. People must learn from lesson.

Hey Josh as our governor. When something like this happens…you are part of the problem by your inabilities to curb this problem. Do you understand !
It's not that the cops don't want to do anything it's very hard to catch the people doing it you have to be very sure that it's the exact person setting it off, most time there is a group so it's harder than you think.
Here’s a legendary Hawaii fireworks tale. A favorite story from long, long ago, so everyone already retired or expired.. HPD cruiser pulled up in front of the Makiki Fire House. Driver got out, Opens the trunk and asks who’d like some fireworks. Guys on duty come out, check’m out and tell the new guy to come look at what they got inside. 5-0 winds up telling FD that next time, he gonna buy from them.
@kawikadee9670 Every new years eve/day at 12 midnight for the past 20 years or so one cop car always drives by around the neighborhood as if to say we see you breaking the law but we not going do nothing. My neighbor lights the fire work when the cop car passing by and if I can clearly see who lit it you think the cop couldn't see who lit it when they pass right by them. It's like some people think cops are blind when in reality they just turning a blind eye because they most likely told to stand down from the higher ups.
Government must ban the sale of fireworks to individuals because setting off fireworks can be dangerous and harmful to people, animals, and the environment. We have selfish, inconsiderate and stupid parents with their equally selfish, inconsiderate and stupid children who let off fireworks near our houses a few times a year when it is allowed by our incompetent and stupid government. This always made the rest of us neighbors feel very anxious and worried because the fireworks could lend on our houses and burn our houses down. 🤬
As the local guy neighbor says casually 'everyone goes to everyone's houses, we all know each other' ?? Seems to be missing the ENTIRE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION THAT EXISTS - WHICH IS MURDER BY IGNORANCE AND FIREWORKS!!! WHAT HAS BEEN MADE A FACT; IS A 14 YR OLD DECIDED TO light a cake aerial inside of that carport and none of the adults acted responsibly enough to stop him!! Why the hell did they have that much arsenal sitting with children present in an open carport at a residence? Let's BAN THIS HORROR FOREVER. THE CULTURAL EXCUSE IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE ON EVERY LEVEL. Not everything is attributed to "culture" - much of it is total MAYHEM, excused away as tradition? If I hear our Governor say 'culturally traditional' as it relates to fireworks one more time, I'll scream. His media advisors need to ban that from his speeches from here on out!!! NO GOVERNOR, MURDEROUS MAYHEM IS NOT A CULTURAL TRADITION. The owners of that home must be held accountable! THE ENTIRE COST IN LIFE AND STATE AND COUNTY WAS TOTALLY PREVENTABLE. NOT TO MENTION THE TRAUMA AND PAIN!!!!
We witnessed a neighbor set off a huge one on the street no where near any holiday and we called the cops. It was late at night and woke up my new born baby. The cops said we had to meet them outside and physically walk them to the house we saw the guys walk out of and point them out to the cops or they weren’t coming. I made my husband do it and they never popped one on our street again. They didn’t get in trouble officially but I guess they know even in the dark the neighborhood watch is there and are not f-ing around.
police wont get involved as neighbors are afraid to call, or dont want to squeal on their neighbors. Also people feel it is okay to do it, because it has been going on for so long, that people think they have a right to endanger their neighbors.
Wait.... Let's rethink this, before it becomes a felony for these illegal fireworks.... As stated, they are investigating who lit it, who the fireworks belongs to, and following chargers to come.... BUT, What if we make these illegal fireworks LEGAL for purchase, with proper identification and an address of where it will be discharged at. If this type of incident occurs, they legally agree to be incarcerated for said charge. Make the purchaser thinks twice of this heavy responsibility of LIFE & Neighbor.....If said purchaser does accept responsibility, the safety this person will take to make sure they do NOT get incarcerated for a felony of illegal possession of explosives or even manslaughter like this case will be of the highest protocols..... The county can even create the guidelines for permit holders to stay compliant throughout the process.....(Even create a new department and staff for this idea!!) Imagine the tax monies off of the sale of permits to purchasers. A WIN WIN across the board,NOW with extra revenues in the County and State coffer....❤
@@sevenblessed2543 It was not a freak accident. They were detonating illegal explosives which caused physical, financial and emotional harm. They damaged people, homes and cars. There is zero excuse when illegal explosives are detonated by the public and therefore they are liable for EVERYTHING.
Are you saying the entire block is getting sued? By who? Has it ever occured to you that the house that exploded did not light that cake of aerials that shot into their garage?! Many innocent people were hurt from it. Sue the people smuggling these fireworks into the State!! Obviously they are above the law due to greed !! Stop voting in people who defund the police!!
Someone I know on Oahu says that the person that usually tries to sell black market fireworks didn't call them this year. They also said that there are cops that are selling the fireworks. There's definitely a sense that Hawaii residents will continue to indulge in fireworks - illegal or not - because "it is part of tradition."

Dang kinda wish the news would give this families house some privacy as they recover from this incident already. They put the families entire house on blast with multiple videos as they are trying to repair. They are literally filming in front of the house as they are trying to clean. It's sickening. Give them privacy as they heal from this unfortunate accident.
@RyanHonoluluHawaii Nah this is a unexpected freak accident. Fireworks are dangerous absolutely and people can be wiser and safer when dealing with them to avoid situations like this. Fireworks go a long way in hawaii and are ingrained in local culture. These older communities run tight, and everyone probably knows one another and partakes in enjoying the aerials together. At this time, when people are all hurting together and trying to recover together, picking up the rubble, it just feels wrong for me personally watching the news film that for coverage. It would be cool if they had a little more privacy, but that's just how I feel. I wish everyone in this event peace and healing during this difficult time.

They come in by plane or ship..
The same way they get everything else. Ships.
Some make their own, black market, or smuggled in.
