    I love this car. Not that it struggled but if you had winters on this would have been a walk in the park.

    The CR-V is ultimately designed to excel on the road while being ADEQUATE off road. The AWD provides excellent rain traction as well as snow (but of course having winter tires is the best) while also doing some light off roading, very capable short of climbing boulders.

    People talk trash about these but you just have to be realistic, its meant to get good mileage be able to haul some stuff around and get you going up hills and such in the winter when its icy. I love my new to me 09 CRV, it was 19F here the other day with ice under the snow and I zipped right around some people who are kind of new here and made the mistake of stopping at the stop sign at the bottom of the hill by my house in their 2wd cars lol. If I want to go blasting back into the woods by my house that has a foot of snow to go shooting or whatever I have a 99 Yukon true 4WD I have some money into, a great truck for that with under 13 K in it. But dont expect the CRV to do that

Nd with that being said I have to torture my car to go on those dirt rocky roads nd Hills nd what not. (BAD IDEA) #1 the Honda civic is very low so it messes up the front grill. But I decided to get an Honda suv nd BOOOYYYY yea... Perfect. Great video. Lmao I mean I will not be going through as ruff terrain as this car but it's good to know that I can..... Never know. The only issue for me with the CRV and RAV4 are the reduced ground clearance. It is more aerodynamic yes but not a good idea to take it on rough roads... And the AWD system is just OK, not the best in town... Prettier and more comfortable than the Forester but not as good for off roading.

      check out a video called 2015 RAV4 in deep snow. AT traction control on. that's actually the name of it, and the username to it is Tony Nguyen. watch all the way to the end. he had TRAC control on and when he disabled it, it went like a real 4wd. my 2010 and my wife's 2013 RAV4'S both are excellent in the snow.

    I’m very impressed by this video. I just knew the CRV would get stuck! The fact that it kept going let’s me know that ALL auto makers are finally taking off road driving seriously enough to build their AWD systems to handle it.
    Great video!

    Bought the EX-L 2015 CR-V. We love it. Fortunately Northwest Washington had a super mild winter this year so we never even saw any snow this year to test out the awd north of Seattle. Thanks Dave. Your reviews helped to direct us to the vehicle of choice.

    This is a very informative video. With good tires, you CAN go offroad, and you CAN reach your destination. On this car, I was able to reach my home even despite the fact the road to the house was covered with a thick layer of uncleared snow. Love it.

    I drove the Forester and The CR-V before my decision. At the end I chose the CR-V because the value for the money. In my opinion, the Subaru brand it offers the best AWD system in the whole category.

  • @panayiotispalmiris1750
    @panayiotispalmiris1750 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sir at 2:09 and 2:25 why not turning economy mode off. I think you had a chance of passing that hill with ECON mode off. ECON mode on kills the engine performance. This is the answer to which of the two should be selected VSA on or VSA off which I asked previously: CRV has VSA traction control which acts like an automatic limited slip differential for the rear wheels too that is why the VSA off button in snow is not advisable since if one rear tyre looses traction then all torque goes to the wheel that is not touching the ground. However if VSA is on an independent rear wheel brake is applied to the wheel that has no traction in order to lock the spinning wheel and send the available torque to the other wheel.

    • @mawwalmazie
      @mawwalmazie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's the part of traction control instead of ECON mode. I personally used 2013 2.0 FWD CR-V, ECON mode smooths out on throttle-body (and other moving parts) which makes engine response slower but a smoother ride and the way that ECON mode was made for personal safety driving and behavior (not to mention economic driving). I rarely use it in the road as Automatic Transmission gear shifts needs engine response quicker (unless you have a V8) and going from 5th gear to 4th gear (and the rest of downshifts) while ECON mode is active requires the gas paddle to be pressed halfway deeper than the regular mode. ECON mode probably only active below halfway throttle, beyond that and it goes to normal mode thus gives you the juice that needed. The real problem on this video is choosing the right tires, snow and all terrain are basically different ones. The VSA actually prevents slip so that the tires don't spin at all, but also because of the CVT slip (moving belt inside), the car can't support itself when in the middle of hill-climb. Honda had great Earth-Dreams tech inside the new CR-V, but adding 3-4 miles per gallon for a CVT is just a big disappointment, a lot of engine refresh happens on Honda but those are only to compliment the new CVT to be mated with. In near future, they'll switch to DCT (rumored) on the Civic, otherwise we'll be staying on stick shift.

    • @mawwalmazie
      @mawwalmazie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also hear on the hill-climb that the engine are running roughly above 1600 RPM, which means torque comes from the engine but not yet distributed to the wheel.

    no wonder people said most stupid AWD belong to CRV.. technically speaking, CRV just Front WD

    • @panayiotispalmiris1750
      @panayiotispalmiris1750 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      azhan mz I will start from CRV AWD literature:
      "By using a limiter switch to prevent transmission of excessive torque to the rear wheels, the propeller shaft and differential unit can be lightweight and compact"
      "When the speed of the front wheels becomes even greater than the rear wheels, the torque limiter mechanism (relief valve) limits the hydraulic pressure that pushes the wet-type multi-plate clutch, and transmits only the necessary driving force to the rear wheels as needed by 4WD driving."
      Actually CRV is AWD but not for off road use. Its ground clearance in only 170mm though this can be increased to 200mm by installing aftermarket springs but alignment is needed. This would make it better off roader. The rear differential has a pressure relief valve which limits the rear wheel torque performance due to this limiter switch. IF you add shims under the spring of the pressure relief valve then the spring becomes more rigid and the system can engage more torque to the rear wheels. But this is modding and you loose the guarantee. We dont know what is the optimum shim thickness and thus this should be avoided. A 9mm shim, as reported by another member, gives more torque to the rear wheels than needed with rear wheel overspin. I guess this was tested with VSA off. Having said the above the AWD firmware update for the 2013 model (the 2014 and 2015 have it from the factory) has given additional torque capabilities to the rear wheels, and sorts most AWD problems. VSA acts like an automatic limited slip differential which is really good , same as having rear differential lockers. So I guess it is better to have VSA on at all times unless stuck. Also in stall situations it might helpful when having VSA off to press acceleration pedal and brake for a few seconds before removing the brake in order to engage all 4 wheels at the same time but only when VSA off is selected otherwise this will not work. The problem which remains to be sorted is the AWD manual lock mode possibility which could give additional rear wheel torque at low speeds by not allowing the AWD rear differentials pressure relief valve to open or by giving more pressure to the system which I think this is impossible with the hardware and safety limitations of the CRVs rear differential due to its lightweight and compact design. Maybe on the 2018 CRV model (5th gen), or which ever year is produced, the AWD differential limiter will be eliminated and a better Honda AWD system can be adopted, like the one used in Honda Pilot (two clutch independent tyre locked AWD differential system) or Hondas newest SH-AWD which has torque vectoring capabilities.

    • @MemphisMojo15s
      @MemphisMojo15s 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      the worst AWD system in any cross-over . I've watched videos and own 2 RAV4'S. 2010 And 2013, both perform as well as our neighbors Forester. we all 3 had the exact same tire on and put on within a couple of months of each other. nice big 20" snow fell and my wife busted the road open in her '13 RAV4, coming in from work. our neighbor couldn't drive as well as my wife and she had to get her husband to get their Forester in the driveway. trust me, I've seen it too many times that Honda CR-V just can't do what the RAV4's do, and with the right driver and tire the Forester will usually only do better than the RAV4. where a Subaru shines and everyone overlooks this is when your suspension is in a bind, or you have one side of your car on ice, the other on dry road...that's where the Symmetrical advantage kicks in. that's really about it. the Honda system barely kicks in and when it does it starts braking the spinning wheels too soon and very aggressively. I work with a lady that has a Subaru and her tires and her skill both sucked and she asked me why she couldn't go in 5" of snow.. tires first, then skill, then your choice of vehicle..that's a good order but they both go together nsync..

      Not trying to start a debate here but I own a 2016 Honda CR-V and have yet to get it stuck in snow or on roads that were completely covered in ice from freezing rain. I have quality ice bias winter tires installed and have tried to get stuck (on roads) with it, like stopping on a hill and starting again. Once again I'm not here to dispute the Rav 4's performance I'm just saying that in my opinion you can't get a Honda CR-V stuck in most conditions on the road. Regards...Dave

    lol i found it surprising that people actually consider the CRV doing well here, being that this is light offroad suitable for AWD and any Crossover would succeed here, the real test was like at 2:06 and 2:22 and the CRV Failed with light snow and a light incline. If any have watched other crossovers performing off road they would change their mind. The CRV has the worst AWD of all the crossovers.

    • @Jason99942

      If you had to buy a new suv right now - would you really want to take your chances with a Subaru Forester, considering all the god awful head gasket / excessive oil burning issues out there? This wasn't a one year model incident, this was multiple years and 1,000s' of vehicles were affected and these 1,000s of people were poorly treated by Subaru including wasting their time with oil consumption tests which were concluded to be 'normal'.
      I don't have a problem buying a Subaru - IF those horror stories and lack of Subaru support weren't so pervasive - but they are and frankly I'm disgusted with how they handled it.
      While every manufacturer has had issues - Subaru's response was just unacceptable or forgivable.
