Anders when I think of purist barmen, I think of you. I love that you keep the recipes traditional and don't stray into fads. Plus you appreciate a beautiful glass. My parents loved beautiful glasses and antique dishware and traveled the world collecting them. I am missing them this Christmas, but somehow seeing the Brandy Alexander glass reminded me of them. Cheers.
I was literally freezing today waiting for my bus, came home and made myself a Hot Toddy from your older video. And I made this specific recipe. Really tasty. Thanks Anders, cheers.
Have to try that! 😃 Growing up in Sweden, we used to drink “Hot Lumumba” when/after skiing. It’s basically just hot chocolate with Cognac (or sometimes dark rum), but man that was good! Great memories 😃❤️
I remember keeping bar up on Madeline Island years ago. I went out there before the ice was out and we would get a lot of requests for the Wisconsin take on the Brandy Alexander. The more seasoned of my esteemed colleagues absolutely loathed making them because of how much work and mess was required. I on the other hand, found the drink charming and enjoyed making them. Needless to say, I backed myself into a corner on that one!😂
All of these look delicious! Also, I would love a video talking about the different creme de cacaos and other "creme de..." liquers. Especially talking about different brands, budget vs fancier, etc.
I had a variation of the rum hot toddy during a vacation in Poland! It had apple rum instead of regular dark rum, black tea, cinnamon and cloves. Definitely the best hot cocktail I’ve ever had! Will be trying this one this weekend :)
One of my favorite “seasonal holiday drinks” is a bourbon flip, with bourbon that has been fatwashed in browned butter. And when your at it, making a more “complex” drink, use a rich, caramel sugar suryp (about 2/3 ounce) 👌🏻😍😋 It’s like drinking toffee/caramel/fudge candy, but still a nice bourbon drink. But one is usually enough 😁.
OH man I'm going to try that brandy alexander, sounds great. Here is an eggnog one I just came up with last week. 2oz rum chata, 1/2oz fireball whiskey, 2oz eggnog, into rocks glass and stir.
YES, the Brandy Alexander milkshake!!! Back in the day, after Christmas dinner, my dad would make these & allow us kids 1 each. (Maybe as a way to get us to finally wind down, lol?) Thanks for the memory-jog, @AndersErickson! ❤🍸🎄❤️
When making this many cocktails for 1 video, do you guys dump them out afterwards? Or hang out at the studio and finish them? Just thought of it when I saw all 5 lined up at the end.
@@AndersErickson That's what I guessed. What a great excuse to just hang out and enjoy some drinks. Another great video by the way. Keep up the good work!
So I tried the Coleen Bawn because it sounded interesting, and thanks to your episode on green chartreuse substitutes, I made it with Faccia Brutto…this is delightful! Thanks, Anders!
My son created a Drink that is VERY GOOD!! 2 oz of Bullet Rye, 1-1/2 OZ fresh Lemon Juice, 2 Tbls of Maple Syrup and 1/4 t of Good Cinnamon. Shaken with crushed ice and everything into the glass.
I made a variation of the Sentimental Gentleman this week that I call the "Sweet Gentleman" - same basic recipe, but switching out the walnut liqueur for chocolate liqueur (specifically Pataka Cacao Liqueur). For the scotch I used Glemorangie 10. Heartily recommended. Cheers!
flip drinks always tend to be a one and done whenever i fancy one, but they're such a delight made one for a menu at my work that kinda tastes like a christmassy porridge, involving scotch, allspice dram, oat syrup (1 part oat milk, 1 part sugar) and a whole egg, grated dark chocolate over the top
Great video as usual, may need to track down a few more bottles of liqueurs. Speaking of which, any chance you could do an intro to homemade liqueurs and infusions at some point?
Hi Anders, what a fantastic way to start the holiday season!!….A slow gin sour is a must have!….thank you for presenting such beautiful cocktails!👌👌👌👏👏👏 Happy Holidays🌲 , have a wonderful weekend😁 and CHEERS!🥃🍹🥃🍹
Thanks for including the Sentimental Gentleman in this one, Anders! It inspired me to make a riff & use up my current bottle of Scotch--I don't have walnut liqueur on my bar cart, but I thought Frangelico would be a fitting substitute. 🌰🥃
It’s not really a cocktail, but in the french alps we love green chaud during winter : just a hot chocolate with chartreuse, it’s amazing. But now I need to try a brandy Alexander
The hot iron poker thing has triggered me. I remember of a Kickstarter project talking about that, I've searched a bit and found something about caramelized beers and rums but still never tried. I think it would be a nice try in front of the fire. Can you make a little video about that?
Would love a video like this but geared towards how to make a “batch” for easy hosting without being stuck making drinks for an hour then everyone pandering you again when they want another. Is it possible to make a couple before hand and simply pour and garnish?
Man, i want to make all of these, which means i need Benedictine and sloe gin, which means i guess i can finish a Christmas list. Thanks Anders! Happy holidays to you and Az.
Try making the Brandy Alexander with Meletti Cioccolato instead of the Creme de Cacao. I made it with both chocolate liqueurs and the Meletti was the bigger hit. 🤤 🎉
Dude, you’re a boss. I made your Wassail for a holiday party along with some Fish House punch anc Smoking Bishop and the Wassail was unreal! I used a classic Munich Doppelbock as I live in Munich and it’s really a perfect beer style for the drink. Looking forward to trying a couple of these out.
Hi Anders, I think your Amazon affiliate link for your favorite mixing glass might be inaccurate. I purchased it and it felt huge compared to what you use in your videos. I bought the jigger, 1.3" ice molds and julep strainer you recommend as well. They all just felt off and tiny in comparison to the 24 ounce glass (I had to use so much ice to fill the container). I also couldn't pour it one handed for the life of me. I ordered the 18 ounce version and it looks and feels just right. Love your videos btw! I've put off starting a home bar for years and your videos gave me the push and it's been so much fun!
Can anybody back me up here. When I bartend I use a jigger for my cocktails but I free pour to the😅 pour line on drinks like a Seagram's 7&7 , Rum & Coke, Vodka & soda, etc. Some customers say I need to over pour for them and free pour. Honestly free pouring seems trailer trash to me. It seems like all the high-end bars in New York and anywhere never free pour.
Anyone have experience with using sugar substitutes in cocktails? I’m considering using a ‘brown sugar’ style Erythritol based sweetener for simple syrup. Any thoughts? Thanks.
The Sentimental Gent- a favorite...not having any walnut liqueur, I subbed in some praline liqueur and it was dynamite! Does that change the name? Do I need to name it and claim it? 😋
FYI, Colleen Bawn is an anglicisation of the Irish "Cailín Bán", meaning "fair" or "pure" (or, more literally, "white") girl. The Colleen Bawn the drink is almost certainly named after is Ellen Scanlan, who was notoriously murdered by her aristocratic husband shortly after their marriage.
Will definitely try these. My favorite drink this time of year is your recipe of the lions tail. Anders, what are some other drinks I can make with all spice dram?
Give my version of the Maria Pickford a try: 1.5 oz. (45 ml) Rum 1.5 oz. (45 ml) fresh pineapple juice 1/4 oz. (7.5 ml) homemade grenadine 1/4 oz. (7.5 ml) fresh lime juice 1/4 oz. (7.5 ml) Allspice Dram 1/2 bar spoon (2.5 ml) Maraschino Liqueur
Love your video's. Need to throw this recipe out there for Christmas: White Christmas: 2 oz Vodka .75 Peppermint Schnapps .75 Mozart White Chocolate Liquor Mix and stir over ice then strain into a martini glass rimmed with red granulated sugar. Keep up the great work Anders! And Merry Christmas!
The Colleen Bawn is a play by an Irishman which is probably an english version of the Irish An Cailín Bán which would directly translate to The White Girl, which makes sense given the drinks appearance. Other translation interpretations could be White Lady, Pale Girl/Lady, Fair Girl/Lady
Anders drops a video, all I’m thinking is I bought everything, I’m fully stocked, there’s no fancy ingredients that he can throw at me. First drink just casually requires half an ounce of a walnut liquor. 😂. Damnit dude!
Can someone explain to me the stirring with ice and then poring over ice? If you’re like most folks, who only have one type of ice, does it make a difference? Why not open poor?
Dilution is the reason mostly. Smaller ice has more surface area per cooling volume. Once you've stirred with ice it's pretty much served it's use to dilute and chill the drink. The new ice helps maintain drink temp, since its bigger and melts slower it will dilute the cocktail less.
I go back and forth between the big rocks and smaller cubes, too. Big rock certainly dilutes slower and is modern luxury… but you don’t get the jingle-jangle-clink they reminds you of your granddad. Depends on the mood! Cheers! 🥃
ANY sloe gin cocktail will be Christmassy to me. Here in merry old England, as a child I'd go picking sloes with my grandma every autumn so that she may prick them and steep them in Gordon's for a couple of months or so. Only in my teens at Christmas was I allowed to taste that cough-syrupy goodness. No shop-bought liqueur ever tasted as good as ours.
