Probably the best instructional video on TH-cam. I have used this twice now for CK04 and MK series. Isn't it amazing how people go out their way to help each other. Faith is back in humanity :-)
Pouse, we can’t thank you enough for this tutorial, we are starting to renovate a small hamlet in Normandy, France and this Velux installation vid has been priceless, your explanations etc are second to none, thank you so much, loving your work. Yip and Paul from Channel 4’s ‘Help We Bought A Village’
Glad you found the video useful 👍 I'll confess, I've not watched 'Help we bought a village' yet, but I'll be sure to check it out. I wonder if the velux will feature on channel 4?! Best of luck with your village!
Always thought this was a daunting task. But with your clear instructions and real time explanations I followed and fitted as I went. (Watched the whole thing twice first). Few adjustments as I was using felt shingle tiles. But it all went smoothly. A huge thank you to you for your time and effort to film this.
Very useful and practical video. THANK YOU! Not always possible to follow the manuals. I twisted and turned regarding the use of the Velux underfelt collar as my windows are near the ridge and hip corner so will have to be inventive, but went for it at the end and will adapt as necessary. I installed two Colt Rotos around 30yrs ago and they need replacing. I'm 77yrs now and the wife didn't want me to do it. Luckily the roofer who was going to do the job in Dec (to be fair it was due to the horrendous amount of rain we had in November) wasn't able to do it. So this has given me the chance to make sure it will be done properly and save £1500 too. If you do stuff yourself you can always take a little extra time to do things 100% that the tradesman can't afford to do. So thank you for this. BTW, The JJRoofing videos are very good too.
It's the lessons learned from experience of previous installs that are so extra helpful. This is a big job and you don't want those sort of surprises halfway through. Great angles, nice explanations, very helpful. Appreciate it!
Well I have just sat here for an hour and watched this and it has just flown by. I did actually fit four of these two years ago into my conservatory roof conversion and whilst I followed your video installation, wish I had had access to it two years ago. Great video, and nice to see a comment from Big Pouse (think he was a little jealous!!)
i hav'nt fitted these for years!,so as a Carpenter i thought i would brush up on it,watched another couple of carpenters on here, not very well explained, also watched Velux tutorial, which was good, but yours was excellent, well done i enjoyed that.even thou was an hour,it flew by.keep up the good work, mark.
Thanks for the kind words Mark. It was a long one to film and edit but hopefully of some use! Thanks for watching and good luck with the velux installation.
Thank you for taking the time to so thoroughly explain all aspects of the installation and operation of the window, your tutorial has demystified a complex job. Take care and stay safe, cheers from Australia 🇦🇺👍🤗
Thanks for that Pal, it’s the disengagement of the spring that i really needed to see , i made the boo boo of opening it fully while taking it out of the box , i was able to take the window out of the frame and fit the frame but when it came to the top flashing i couldn’t fit it until the springs were disengaged . 👍
Pouse, thanks for taking time to do this video. Fitted my velux this weekend using your video as a reference point. Job went perfect. Can’t thank you enough, made my job easy, cheers Ben
Yeah great video mate. Hit the nail on the head perfectly regarding the snags you run into when fitting in situ.... Doing a fair amount of replacements at the moment on all roof types, using varying brands of window, and there is ALWAYS something that isn't as straight forward as the instructions attempt to make it look, so this video and similar ones are extremely helpful to tradesmen of all skill levels, so thanks alot!
Nice video, I had two windows installed, one worked properly, the other didn't hold. Thanks to your video I now have both windows operating and holding properly.... thanks
The amount of detail you went into is superb, thank you for your effort and ill be referring back to this video when it comes time for me to install my velux window.
This is the best education on installing a top hinged Velux that I have come across -even far ahead of the Velux demo -Well done my friend even though I have forgotten your name I would love to employ you many thanks for your tutorials .
Hi mate, I have been trying to find installation information like this, velux website has very basic and hard to follow instructions. I have 6 windows to fit and you have my friend have just made the whole process so much easier for me. Velux should pay you and use this detailed video on their website. Many thanks Keith
Hello Pouse (around the House), thank you very much for your instructional film. This is much clearer than the original from Velux, nice also for the wise advice when unpacking the window and and sharing with the window frame. I will wait a while for a day without rain before I do the job. Greetings from the Netherlands, Ernst
To use the centre pivot you just release the top handle and pull down? You use the bottom handle and push up for the top hung. Is that what you're doing?
Just wanted to say a very big thank you for this amazing video mate, it helped loads! We finally bought and installed a UK04 over the weekend. Glad I took my time to get the roof framing square, because we had the BDX insulation collar - If anyone buys this they should definitely add the full 60x45mm extra space as it becomes a very snug fit with little to no wiggle room to square the frame up. My neighbour gave me a hand with the installation, we kept this video on our phones to guide us through each step of the way! Not an easy job, but well worth the effort! Think I'll stick to installing Microsoft Windows from now on 😀 Thanks again mate!
Glad you found the video useful. My installation probably isn't perfect but no two roofs are the same, and after 4 years of being installed, all 3 of my velux windows haven't had so much as a trickle in all sorts of Welsh weather! I'll give you a shout my my computer need an upgrade! Thanks for watching 👍
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE well done mate! I did worry about it leaking but so far so good. We also live in Wales - ideal place to test them! 😂 might install the smaller size if I convert our old garage into a games room, definitely don't feel like struggling with the larger size again unless we have scaffolding up. Thanks again 😊
Hey. First want to Thank you for the detailed, well explained video. I Just installed a Windows Like this and while fitting the Windows into place, opened it completely to e'gage the springs. Both sides are ingaged but only one side can move. The other side wont pull the spring (but is e'gage in the mechanism. So when engaging the springs ( 2clicks) the Windows stays open a'd won't shut. Can you or some one help US out in a' y way What is going on and how to fix this? Thanks in advance!!
Great video far better then the cartoon instructions fitting a 2nd hand GGL m06 with EDL m06 flashing Had to buy new flashing kit for window as missing. So many bits... To a log cabin felt shingle roofs thanks for taking the time to make
Very good fit, but I think the bottom flashing is high. There is an opportunity to flow from there. I think another line of tiles is needed before the bottom flashing. Regards
Thanks for your video, very good explanations.Got a question for you please.Bought off eBay to new VELUX windows but got the slate flashing. Can I make it work for concrete tiles ? What's the difference?
It probably depends on your concrete tiles. If they're flat then maybe as the soakers will work. If they're shaped, then you may need the flexible flashing kit. Best to check on the velux website. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. 👍
I have the top and bottom plaster ingoes dropping down vertical at the bottom and horizontal at the top. So your bridle should be set further down and further up to help air circulation. And give more headroom and more manoeuvring space at the bottom. Just a small detail..
My loft has an RSJ running along the middle on each side of the slope. Am I stuffed for adding a window? Every video I see just had direct access to rafters and doesn't show getting around the RSJs. Thanks!
As long as your window is going above or below the RSJ (or possibly just your purlins if timber) and the space is big enough for you window then it's fine. You still need to double up you rafters on each side and double your timbers top and bottom if it's a big window. Hope that helps.
The 2x4s are for structural support to spread weight on the rafters, and the battens lift the window frame to the correct height for the flashing as per the instructions.
Really good video, im about to fit my first velux in a new small extension slate roof. I haven't felt and battened the roof yet, would you fit the velux frame before felting? Then felt around it neatly and fit the battens so the slates work with the height of the velux? Im thinking that it may be easier to do a good job on the felt around the window if the battens weren't in the way. Any input would be appreciated 👍
You can do it either way to be honest. If you feel it's easier to line it up by doing frame first then go for it but you need your battens to line up right with facias also to get your slate overhang right. Maybe batten up to velux height in roof, then fit your frame and carry on with battens? I'm not a professional just a DIYer so there may be better ways to this. Best of luck with it and thanks for watching!
Hi Pouse, great video as always. I'm in the middle of my loft extension and about to install the velux. I am unable to get the vertical trimmings from gable to roofline due to the position of the purlins and collar. Do you think it will be sufficient to do the verticals from collar to roofline? Thanks in advance.
I honestly couldn't say really as it depends on size of window, span of your rafters etc, but on a small window, if you brace a horizontal trimmer from one rafter to the next, then put a shorter timber vertically between the trimmers, that will probably work. When you say gable to roofline, i'm not entirely sure what you mean sorry.
Hello, nice video I have to change the left projection spring because it is faulty. I would like to change it without removing the sash. Does your spirit level method work? What is the size or model of your spirit level you put ? is this dangerous? of course the right spring will be engaged. Thank you.
I can't say whether this is safe as such because it could always be knocked out. My gut feeling is if one spring is on place you should be OK but I would suggest a length of timber propped from the floor would be more secure. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Nice video! I really enjoyed the good explanations and showing! Only downside is the audio. Some of the times I have a hard time hearing the speak, and in some clips it's very quieter where other clips are loud. Recommend you'd use a lavalier microphone (they come cheep these days) even with Bluetooth, and then leveling/evening out/normalizing the sounds throughout the videos in post.
just squaring my rafters at the moment i have got 8 reclaimed velux to install, this video is very helpful thanks a mill :-) any advise when using reclaimed velux. 6 are simpy for light 2 for opening
No advice really as I've only ever fitted new. But I would definitely do the extra bit's of roof membrane around the window as I did. I haven't had so much as a weep in my 3 windows in all sorts of terrible weather, and I had all the windows exposed on the inside through several storms while doing the loft, and I really didn't see a drop of damp around them. Now years later, still good. Best of luck 👍
Thanks for a really great tutorial on how to fit a velux window, I have a question, my window is 780mm x 980mm the rafters are spaced at 400mm centres, do I have to cut out 2 rafters? If so this means I would be more than 60mm margin as you mentioned.
You have to replace the cut rafters with another rafter at the right spacing to maintain the strength. When you strengthen the opening with horizontal timbers top and bottom you can then place a 'rafter between the horizontals at the opening you require to create your frame. Hope that helps. Best of luck.
Thank you for the video, put a velux in 20 years ago, this one is going on our roof , rosemary tiles no membrane 1925 house . Would you advocate running a metre around the window . Great upload 👍👍 From a dull plumber
Sorry, not sure what you mean, a metre of what, roof membrane? My understanding is that the flashing kit should work on it's own but I guess you could run a bit of membrane around it as I dis just to stop high winds pushing any water through. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I just insulated my roof with pir board and cut down to size to fit between window and rafters as per rest of roof. Look at my loft conversion playlist on my channel and watch insulating between rafters video. The roof is a mix of old and new. Hope that helps.
You drilled those holes into the slates too close to the waterline of the slates above. Also there should be a batten to support the top flashing to stop it sagging. Pretty good video
No different to this really, the only difficulty is getting on roof at start and getting first few slates out. You need to remove them from top down which will expose slates below to free them using a slate ripper and hammer. Prob best to buy a pack of new slates before you start as you will definitely crack a few. They're only about 80p each. But once you have a hole big enough to stick your body through, you can cut the felt and do the rest from inside as you saw me do. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and best of luck with it.
Thanks mate, just watched your slate replacement video and put a ripper in my basket. Must replace headers above our rear windows first so hopefully do the window before taking scaff down. Weather still crap here near Swansea so won't be at it for couple months. Thanks again!
No. Just through next batten (above flashing) as per other slates. Then slates over hang and sit tight to the flashing. Never nail through the exterior flashing. By using the right flashing (in this example a slate flasing) it is designed to fit with standard slate spacing with a batten gauge of approximately 25cm. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I just had a look to see what you mean and further to my previous comment, I nailed through slates above flashing which meant for those few slates the nails were higher up the roof to avoid nailing through the flashing. You can always add a piece of batten and nail to rafters if you want to fix your slates at a specific height. When your next row of slates goes on it will pull these slates down tight. Hope that helps.
Hi there, great video. Thanks for uploading Just wanted to ask. I have a really old loft windows that needs replacing. The gap for the window from inside is 61cm x 96cm. Velux doesn't have the exact size . Is it better to get a smaller size Velux windows like CK04 = 55cmx98cm or CK02 = 55cm x 78cm or bigger one like FK04 = 66 x 98cm. Any advise would be very much appreciated thanks.
Probably too late now sorry! But either is fine. Smaller window will require timbers adding to fill the gap, and some additional roof membrane and batten to cover the new gap but a larger will need some timbers cut out and strengthened. So pros and cons to both but the larger will give you more light. Hope that helps 👍
Probably the best instructional video on TH-cam. I have used this twice now for CK04 and MK series. Isn't it amazing how people go out their way to help each other. Faith is back in humanity :-)

You Sir are a Natural Born Teacher. A most excellent instructional video which you have clearly taken great pains to make. THANK YOU.

I have to change the left projection spring because it is faulty.
Thank you for your comeback. For more safety, a person will hold the sash with the spirit level to relieve. Is it 100cm spirit level ? Thanks

A superbly instructive video. Chware teg.
Glad you liked it.
Great video superb detail and handy hints will order the window now, thanks
Best of luck with it!
Brilliant thank you!
No problem, thanks for watching!
I have since bought a better camera and lavalier mic so hopefully some improvement for future videos. Thanks for the feedback.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Still nice video, though :) Thanks again for the upload
just squaring my rafters at the moment i have got 8 reclaimed velux to install, this video is very helpful thanks a mill :-) any advise when using reclaimed velux.
@@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE thank you for taking tbe time to respond so comprehensivly 🙂
Fantastic video mate helped me very much, you've got yourself a new subscriber keep up the good work!
Thanks for the sub and thanks for watching!
Amazing video, thanks for all the great advice and instructions.
Glad to help.
Excellent advice 😊
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video, put a velux in 20 years ago, this one is going on our roof , rosemary tiles no membrane 1925 house .
Would you advocate running a metre around the window .
Great upload 👍👍
From a dull plumber
Sorry, not sure what you mean, a metre of what, roof membrane? My understanding is that the flashing kit should work on it's own but I guess you could run a bit of membrane around it as I dis just to stop high winds pushing any water through. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
Best video so far but how did you do the insulation part? You obvioulsy have a new roof but you didn't use the bdx frame: you think it's useless?
I just insulated my roof with pir board and cut down to size to fit between window and rafters as per rest of roof. Look at my loft conversion playlist on my channel and watch insulating between rafters video. The roof is a mix of old and new. Hope that helps.
good instructional velux installation. better than velux material.
Thanks for the feedback.
You drilled those holes into the slates too close to the waterline of the slates above. Also there should be a batten to support the top flashing to stop it sagging. Pretty good video
Thanks for the info but it's all good years later. Not so much as a weep. Thanks for watching.
Excellent tutorial, cheers!
No problem.
Excellent video 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job on the video - thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I have a very urgent question about the installation of a window, could you help me, please?
Bit late with my reply but feel free to ask...
Fantastic video great content!
Thank you. Plenty more on my channel 👍
good concise to the point video - thankyou
No problem.
Very nice tutorial with all precious details. Thank You !
Thanks for the feedback.
Very nice, thank you 👌👍
No problem.
Super video mate! We have a composite slate too, are these easy to fit into an existing roof? Cheers
On video installing velux sky light you never showed fitting top slates Across flashing .do you nail slates through flashing .
Excellent very thorough
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Clear informative video. Much appreciated for this.
My pleasure.
Hi there, great video. Thanks for uploading
Just wanted to ask.
Made it look easy.
They are very user friendly windows to be fair. It's filming it that's difficult! Thanks for watching.
My goodness, where do I find a man like that 😮
On a roof! Thanks for watching.
