Most AEW fans dont know one of the reasons that 2019-2021 AEW was good because Cody was there backstage with a headphone helping book the show.

AEW won the 2019 battle against NXT because novelty effect, and not being associated with McMahon. The product had some good moments, but NXT Black and gold wasn't worse. In my opinion, it was better than Dynamite.

The stories now are worse, that I agree with. Also, I would argue that AEW wasn't even that good when they started out. Vince contributed with his bad booking that made AEW look more special. It was an illusion. I'm currently watching AEW 2019 on MAX and the stories were better then than now, but the wrestling hasn't changed at all. There are some entertainment moments but the actual wrestling is still the same. AEW has not grown one bit. @@CozyHumanoid

Punk came in, Daniel Bryan joined, Adam Cole came over, they put on a very impressive show at All Out and they were starting to feature their key talent in a smart way. Moments like the AFI entrance and dog collar match, or his return promos on Collision when it launched... shaved head "Bret Hart/CMFTR" Punk, "Tell Me When Im Tellin Lies", "The King Is Back"... like, if THAT Punk went into a CMFTR vs Elite feud, then maybe his "nWo" comments wouldnt have aged so poorly.
The problem is AEW gives everyone the same freedom that Punk _earned_ over 30 years, so they allowed idiots to ruin that run.
I've enjoyed Punks recent WWE work, and I'm so glad he gets that closure and will get that HoF ring, but man, AEW really had the best version of CM Punk maybe ever, and chose _The Young Bucks_ over him.

I think maybe the best way to say it for me is... Tony Khan is learning the same hard lessons that are costing him tens of millions of dollars or more in business having leapfrogged the ladder and starting at the top that the guys that run small indie feds learn with talent that walk out on them or get fired and wind up costing them a couple dozen ticket sales for a few weeks' worth of shows.
These are lessons in management that he should've been learning at a much smaller scale. If he had started with a small indie promotion, or even with Ring of Honor, and got that experience first learning those tough lessons through making mistakes on a much smaller scale, you wouldn't be seeing as many high-profile mistakes as you are now in a much larger scale with a much bigger promotion.

I think that Cody leaving AEW. Is where AEW started going downhill. And then when CM Punk left AEW after the backstage situation with Jack Perry, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega. That was when a majority of us wrestling fan's started to stop watching AEW. But the primary thing's that are hurting AEW and it's future. Is Tony Khan, bad creative decisions, and the way he handles the wrestler's. Tony Khan treat's AEW like his own personal fantasy sports league. Instead of a wrestling company.

CM Punk's problems in AEW mostly had to do with the EVP's/Elite and the lockerroom in my opinion more so then TK. TK was in a spot where if you have issues between your EVP's and your most popular talent he couldn't make everyone happy and i think at the end of the day Tony is gonna side with the guys who were there from the beginning.

Got to love when Busted Open is a source of deep truths about our current wrestling situation- it’s hard to watch AEW drop the ball on several key things when it comes to giving talent what they need in a wrestling company. We’re starting to talk about this enough that I think AEW needs to find their own ‘Triple H’ (anyone who mastered wrestling management going into the future) to replace Tony Khan to have the same effect.

Imagine an AEW where their roster right now would be featuring CM Punk, Cody Rhodes, Edge, MJF, Sasha Banks, Jon Moxley, etc.

It all comes back to when Punk said they're just not in the same business as he is. They're not about selling out venues. They care about highlight reels and moments. Nothing wrong with that. No way they'll ever actually compete with the WWE. They are the alternative. Thats exactly what we want. They shouldn't even be compared at this point. That is why they are where they are. We've tried to compare the two. Its not like when WCW was battling WWE. This is situation is two different businesses

    • @Jeff_Pryce

The problem is that highlight reels and star ratings don’t make money. That’s evidenced by the ratings. AEW is the Dave Meltzer theory of wrestling put int real world application, and the numbers now show that it doesn’t work. It’s unsustainable and once they hit bottom, even Tony’s wallet won’t be able to save them.

Tony Khan is too nice and wants to be friends with everyone. It's made it hard for him to make the right decisions. Until he actually leads, AEW will keep missing out on opportunities. The fact that he didn't capitalize on CM Punk vs The Elite, in the ring, is one of the biggest ball drops in wrestling.

Bully and Dave are absolutely correct. I have always said that the dumbest thing that Tony ever did was letting punk go. The thing is, I don’t think that he understands or I don’t think that he cares, that he could have had this happen in his company because, he clearly does not care about attendance or ratings because he has enough money and a guaranteed television deal that he can do whatever he wants. The opinion of the public literally does not matter to this man, which is why he brings in people that the American public does not care about, And why, as Stephanie McMahon said earlier this week, having a match even a great match without a story, is pointless and she’s right. You have to care and Tony doesn’t do enough to make anyone care and what we saw on Monday night, made everyone care.
