    Hey Cameron tell your Mom & Dad this was a terrific video and I learned a lot about making maple syrup! I'm really glad my friend Joe told me about your channel. It's so refreshing to see a family being outside "doing " and experiencing the goodness of natures bounties. Thanks for another great video!! ....Pete.

    Hello from Quebec, Canada ! I picked your channel from DaddyKirb and you hooked both my husband and me with your evaporator. We're boiling right now on our kitchen stove, but we'll be able to make a much bigger harvest when we'll have an evaporator. So, your design is welcomed. I subscribe ! Louise from Quebec

    I like your idea for the evaporator! I make a little syrup every year, but I always used the propane burner from a turkey fryer. I might have to build a wood fired one now!

    Nice video. I boil sap in the spring and in my experience, it's better to move your boiling sap from one pan to another and only fill one of your pans with cold sap. That way, you maintain your temperature in your "finishing pan". You will save energy and waste less time getting to your finishing temps. :)

    Awesome video! 2017 will be my 2nd year collecting sap and making syrup also from Wisconsin. Between Wausau and Antigo.
    Last year I made a block evaporator. It worked well for what we boiled last year. However this barrel method seems to do even better!
    Subscribed as well! I will be looking to make a few syrup collecting/making videos this year for my channel. It would be nice to have a fellow "TH-camr" from Wisconsin available for some guidance and criticism. Great channel!

    • @theweekendhomestead
      @theweekendhomestead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      andre correia I filter it with cheese cloth then let it cool, put in fridge for up to a week and then finish it. I don't go over a week because for some reason the pre-finish gets cloudy on us then

    35 gals down to 3+/- gals. I'll never grouse about the price of maple syrup again. Do you have enough birch trees to tap for birch syrup? It is suppose to be pretty good.
    Cameron, what a crack up.

    • @theweekendhomestead
      @theweekendhomestead  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bottling video will be coming soon, 35 gallons became 6 pints of finished syrup - total for the season was about 100 gallons of sap that became about 15 pints total

    • @theweekendhomestead
      @theweekendhomestead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rick Green BTW - We do have a load of birch trees on the property. We have thought to tap some of them next year and try birch sap.

    • @valross4886

    You are missing something! The smoke house. Fire it up, hang the hams and when you skim the maple syrup put the "stuff" on the fire and enjoy maple cured ham. Just a suggestion from a city boy who married a Vermont farmers daughter.

    Ok, I got to the point where it took him 6 try’s to light birchbark. That’s where I stopped the video to make a constructive comment.
    If you don’t want to look like an idiot, edit out the first 5 attempts at least. At best, learn how to use a lighter to easily ignite very flammable birchbark. It may help you survive some day. Best wishes!
