    I have been a weekend warrior, overlander, rock crawler since 1998 when I purchased my first vehicle. It was a '97 Jeep Cherokee Sport w/ the 4.0l I6 and AX15 manual transmission. I loved it and drove it over and through all kinds of terrain. I took it as far as Alaska and Mexico. At 150,000 hard mixed miles and because of its 5" lift and 33" tires it was starting to be expensive to maintain. With three kids, we have moved up to an 05" Tundra SR5 double cab. It is a little big, but the only problem I see with it is no factory rear locker even in the TRD. I have lifted it 2" in the front with bilstien 5100s and the rear 1.5" with add-a-leaf springs to increase payload. We have taken it to Alaska and all over Utah and the Four Corners area. We also pull a modified M416 trailer when we are on longer trips. It has been great for a family and will go anywhere I want or need to go.

      Jared,
      The 05 and 06 Tundra has possibly the best quality-to-cost ratio for any used truck. What a great rig to take you and your family on many more adventures!

    I have a 1996 Land Cruiser. It is my first car and oh my gosh i love it so much. Not the most powerful thing in the world but so stout and reliable. Solid axle is really what I was going for and this car delivers offroad with the lockers. Added a 2inch lift and some 33s (will be bigger soon) and it will go anywhere I point it. Also for being a 20 year old car its amazing how well it can cruise down the highway.

    What's that old saying...if you want to head into the bush get a Land Rover but if you want to make it out get a Toyota? :) Something like that. I have a 2016 4Runner Trail Edition. Wanted one since I was in high school. Finally got to have it 20 years later. Love it !!

    Tried life with 1990 s10 blazer. to small, lacked power and storage. Went to the other side with a 2004 Toyota Sequoia Limited. Big motor and lots of storage inside and out. Still deciding if i should do any lift. Primarily a daily with as many weekend trips as life allows. Thanks for sharing your experiences. They do help.

    I had a '06 DC Tacoma I had to give up to get my wife into something and I sure miss that truck. I would have to say it was the best all around truck I have ever owned. Big enough to tow some toys and haul gear but still small enough to get into some secluded places. I currently own a '12 Dodge Ram 3500 with the Cummins that its primary roll is used to pull our toy hauler and I find that the full size trucks are just to big and heavy for overlanding. I've really been eyeing the new Tacoma's, I really like the crawl control on them but unfortunately the crawl control feature only comes with the automatic and I've always been a manual kind of guy when it comes to off roading. I'm sure I'll be getting the auto when I decide to buy another Tacoma.

    Just recently picked up a TRD Pro 4Runner. I plan on leaving the suspension as is till it wears out, but it'll be a weekend warrior and daily. I already love it. I'm hoping to pick up great advice from this series. If y'all don't do a video on it, would I be able to talk to someone about picking good lines? I know how to pick racing lines from when I raced for several years, but I want my truck to last me forever and picking good trail lines will certainly help that

    another thing to look for in an overland vehicle would also be bolt on options like bumpers, rock sliders, lift kits, and many other things. you could buy a vehicle and there will be very little things available for that make and model. i chose a 2000 jeep cherokee xj because i knew they are very common and you can buy anything for them so that also comes into play also. Great video tho

    Great video. I have a question though. Is it a good idea to add a gas tank to a vehicle like a 4runner for greater range or just bring some cans of gas? The thing about adding a gas tank makes me worried about going boom. I am looking at the Tacoma and 4runner to be my overland vehicle. My second question is how important do you think it is for me to put a steal bumper on front and back? I am going to get a really good beefy winch for my vehicle as well. Any advice on what kinda winch to buy? Brand? Style?

    Oh Hey Jeff!
    I just purchased a brand new Tundra. Unfortunately for me, the off road community hasn't really adopted it because the Tacoma and 4 Runner are the preferred toys.
    I've just started building it and I am very heavily considering and Icon suspension because that is what you guys used on your new 4 runners.
    I do a lot of highway travel around the US with my wife. When off road, I stick mostly to trails and I've never taken it rock crawling... Which suspension would you use? If it's Icon, (I wouldn't consider anything below a stage 4) which stage would you use?

    • @ExpeditionOverland
      @ExpeditionOverland  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danan, Congrats on the new Tundra!
      What a great platform for overlanding. I think you are spot on with the ICON stage 4. That setup will greatly improve your overall handling on all surfaces and you can add UCA's, heavier springs, ect. to match the progression of your build and driving style over time. Keep us posted on your build and thanks for watching!

    If I was rich I'd probably get a 4x4 RV van.But as it is everything is still in the dream stage.As it is to start with we may have to settle for a small travel trailer and try to get just abit off the beaten path occasionally. Hopefully before we get to much older.First though I guess I will need to trade my Dodge in for a Truck that the wife can actually get into.

    Hey Jeff,, cant decide between a 2007 LC 100 series vs 2008 LC 200 for the life of me..
    The goal is to go over landing across the Americas.
    The wants are:
    - it should be highly configurable (too many electronics and gadgets on the 200 worry me)
    - I should be able to do bush repairs
    - Must have enough power to take me into the 2030's :)
    Any advice ? What would you personally pick?

    • @ExpeditionOverland
      @ExpeditionOverland  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me start by saying that my experience with the Jeep Cherokee is somewhat limited. From my understanding the inline 6 engine is pretty good. If needed, beef up the suspension, linkage, axels, ect. to accommodate your driving stile and you'll be good to go.
      A concern to me would be making sure you keep that unibody structure true, which of course all depends on how you drive it. Otherwise I think most issues are maintenance related and simply require a little upkeep. I have friends who love the Jeep XJ and it takes them anywhere they want to go.
      Here are a few links you might want to check out.

      I think there are two factors. First would be the size. Some full size trucks are too wide for some trails or they sink into the terrain due to the weight. one example of the weight is on Expedition Overland's South America Expedition where they were wheeling around the beach and one of their heavier rigs just dug into the sand.
      I think the other is fuel consumption. Heavier the weight, usually more thirsty the rigs are...so I think those are pretty much the two reasons.

In Australia the more popular rigs are the 79/100/200 Toyotas, and the GU Patrol, along with some Jeep and some Pajero

    • @CatBend
      @CatBend 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Much depends on how many people and how much gear you carry. The HD pickup is capable of bigger loads but sacrifices maneuverability, clearance, economy and everyday practicality. Too big for some trails and a pain to park in the city. The Cummins is a powerful engine but tends to foul when unloaded and is expensive to maintain. I see many full-size pickups with families and pop-up truck campers or travel trailers but rarely on difficult trails.

    • @Youfailallday
      @Youfailallday 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And honestly to get a suspension setup that is capable and comfortable for something like a full-size diesel is going to be super pricey. Coming from a 2008 crew cab Cummins 2500 to a 17 TRD off road it’s a world of difference on trails. Even with stock suspension on the taco. Trying to wheel something big through tight skinny trials just isn’t practical

  • @lumpskie

    I'm still running a 1st gen Taco. My trips are a week or less and the pickup bed can carry all of my gear easily. I've been totally happy with it for 1 or 2 people. For a family though, I think a 4 door is required.

    Thank you for this video! My wife and I are planning a 6-12 month trip around North America with our 11yo daughter and two dogs. We have a fair bit of experience traveling (about 15,000 miles of extended bike touring, and another 2,000 miles of extended hiking between us) but not a whole lot of experience with vehicular travel, let alone vehicular overlanding. We don't need something for rock-crawling but we want something we won't be too worried about taking to Alaska, Baja, into the backcountry in Escalante, stuff like that. We're currently weighing a Sportsmobile (Ford E350) vs. a 4Runner/Adventure Trailer (ish) setup. The Sportsmobile is appealing because it's just 1 "thing" and it gives us some interior living space, but the 4Runner/Adventure Trailer is appealing because it's probably a fair bit less money, and we can leave the trailer to do day trips.
    Y'all clearly know what's up -- any thoughts? I know there's no "right" answer here.

    All four springs were so shot that when I put a 3" lift kit on it it raised 4 1/2". 31x10.5 AT's get me round trip to Death Valley area (1600mi) twice a year and running around there each trip (500+/-mi). I had a CVT RTT, but won't do that again. I might go with a Smittybilt 2783. Looked at one at KOH back in February and I liked the quality of it.
    (I carry so much crap I had to buy a trailer.)

    09 4Runner, Bought her from my boss for next to nothing. I took her out west this summer and had a blast, I did dual batteries and built a kitchen in the back with a fridge and an inverter for my laptop and camera gear. Also can run the keurig if I want. I got a second hand 9500 lb winch and built a bracket that bolts to the frame. I still have the factory bumpers. i added a lightbar and an ARB kakadu Tent. Still have stock suspension, but it is very capable as is. I did Imogene pass and the Alpine Loop as well as a few trails in Moab with little trouble. It's still a daily, but a mild lift is in the future. Bought her at 100K and 2 years later, has 176. I go everywhere in her and will keep her for as long as I can. Its the perfect size for me, drives great and I love the fact there is a huge aftermarket for the 4Runners. She has the Bullet proof 1gr-fe and is not bad to work on and has great towing capacity for the rare times I go "Glaping" and borrow my parents' camper. I did upgrade to a great set of all terrain tires and she does have a few battle scars, but that is what I bought her for.

    Hey there Jeff,
    My wife and I are debating to change our caravan to a four wheel drive vehicle with an roof tent in order to get to more remote spots.
    We searched the www but could not find an answer to a question we are coming up with every time we are thinking of a roof tent.
    What do you do if you have to pack up in rain or bad weather in general?
    Will everything inside the tent will get soaking wet?
    How the tent does takes it if it is packed up wet?
    How long can it stay this way?
    This is one of the points we are hitting every time we are discussing this.
    Can you do a “Hey Jeff” about this topic and / or roof tents in general?
    Thank you in advance!
    And keep on exploring and making great videos about it.
    Best Regards form Germany!

    2014 FJ Cruiser - lifted 3", 33" tires and ARB bull bar and Warn winch. Built out for overlanding with front and rear fuse blocks to run an ARB fridge, CB, Ham, and keep everything else charged. Just got it in July after trading in my previous overlanding rig a Lexus LX470 which was also kitted out.

    A used 5th Gen 4Runner @ around 20k is the obvious sweet spot for America. Get one with less than 100k, you'll grow tired of it before it grows tired. Plus the typical 80 series head gasket repair is expensive. It's is much too old and very rarely well maintained. Off- roading and Overland travel are distinctly different, you need reliable transportation, not some lifted gas guzzler with warm A/C! This might surprise Jeff, but the current 4Runner is only available in Canada and USA , it's not even offered in Mexico! The older Nissan Frontier/Navara based pickups were similar across all of the Americas though!

    2005 Mitsubishi Montero/Pajero Limited (not Montero Sport which is a completely different vehicle). Prior to this a 1996 Montero SR.
    Monteros are extremely underrated. They have the toughest construction , reliability to rival Toyota and some of the best road manners in the business for those long long trips. In the US they aren't well known and have a bad aftermarket following because of Mitsubishi's abysmal marketing but your find them overlanding all over the world from Australia , Africa and South America. Their biggest weakness is the lack of articulation because of the IFS but unless your building a rock crawler you'll still be unstoppable. Where else can you find a mid size 7 passenger SUV that fits 33s stock (without rubbing) , has factory lockers , is reliable with bulletproff drivetrain and half the price of a 80 series?
    Check em out guys!

    Top of my list - 80 or 100 Series Land Cruiser still affordable super capable and reliable. I drove a 95 FJ80 for 9 years as a DD and wheeled it offroad all over the Southeast the most versatile and capable offroad vehicle right off the lot. You also can't go wrong with the any model 4-Runner or Tacoma. I'm currently building a 2013 DBLCB TRD Tacoma and after a 3400 mile trip out to Colorado with our club it did extremely well its not my 80 by any stretch but certainly as capable, reliable and very comfortable on or off the pavement. Can't wait for the series keep up the good work :)

    A 1991 Jeep Cherokee I bought for $1,000. I've put about $400 into it to get things up to par (new radiator, water pump, thermostat, battery, and muffler), but I did all the work myself saving a ton of $$$. The in-line 6 cy is a beast, and has no issues. The truck is stock. I'll upgrade the suspension to a 3" lift, and throw some 31" tires on it. That will be about the extent of the work. Maybe if/when I get something a bit newer will I spend the big $$$ to upgrade and pimp it out.

    Great tip on downsizing, You really don't need that much to have a great time out in nature. Explorers in Africa use a minimalist approach when traveling the bush but have the advantage of a more fuel efficient diesel engine that we cant get here.

    Hey Jeff.. I am looking at building an Overlander.
    1. I want to drive around the world, Portugal, Russia, Mongolia and north to south in the americas.
    2. I want to sleep and cook inside, but i dont want to do rock crawling but i do know (from experience) some roads can get rough..
    3. I am looking at the LR Defender 130 or a smaller Toyota Tacoma.
    4. I am on a budget..
    My Question, Is it better to go with a older vehicle and build it the way i want, (Axels and Electronics) or buy a new vehicle and a camper?
    Best Regards, Jeff

    I have my "dream" vehicle for overlanding now. It's a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Hard Rock edition, 4 door. I had a 2012 2 door Rubicon but it just wasn't quite enough space for me and my dog. Plus the 4 door has a much larger gas tank. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 2 door, it was so nimble and maneuverable...but it just didn't quite have enough room inside it for all the crap I wanted to take on longer trips. And it seems all the aftermarket mods are made for the 4 doors these days. I have a few additions to make yet, but by next spring I'll be ready for anything.

    I have a 2003 Lexus GX470 that has been our family vehicle and I have done some off roading and camping with it. It has worked very well for us. I have thought of getting a 4Runner but the TRD Pro does not come in a v8. My concern with my current rig is its age, I don’t want to put a bunch of money into mods and then also be addressing failures that come with age. I do need seating for 4, some room for dogs & gear. It still runs great! Rock crawling isn’t something I would likely pursue. With all that in mind, do you think I should stick with what I have or is there another vehicle you think I should consider?

Rain, snow or shine we are out there having a blast. Only thing I miss is 4-wheel drive, but I have bigger tires and if I drive careful it's pretty amazing where this van can go.

    I picked up an '06 Land Rover LR3 (for a pretty good deal) with the intents of doing family vacations and some weekend (shorter overlanding trips with). Really love the versatility of the vehicle...added some larger tires and lifting rods for the air suspension...still a little leary of the durability of the air system but I could always swap to a coil system if needed. Anyone else using the LR3/LR4 for this stuff or is it just the D2 and defender? So far for the few trips into the hills it will be a great family trail rig and seems very capable (for better then anything I would do with it). I should probably add some sliders and maybe some front and rear bumpers - other than that it seems decent and well suited for this type of use...I also tow a smaller camping trailer so I didn't go the route of a tacoma/4runner although I really like those vehicles as well...any thoughts or suggestions are more than welcome as I'm just dipping my toes into the overlanding arena.
