  • Rei Tsuruya might be the hottest prospect in MMA. He also has one of the coolest (weirdest?) grappling games. Watch this to see how he kills people from the over hook.

      One of those things that has been a thing in freestyle for decades yet is slow to make it over to MMA for whatever reason. Think the same thing will eventually happen with heel hooks/ashi entries

      @@biscobisco1882 for sure, mma meta is fascinating for that reason. From so many outsiders there’s really obvious stuff like “why isn’t everyone doing this” but it’s so trend based in mma. Cage wrestling being maybe the only unique thing to mma?

      @@nelsonkuna I think another MMA specific grappling trend is the preference for flattened out half guard over passing to side control or mount. Seems like the risk reward of attempting to pass and opening up to scramble is really hindered by ground and pound

      @@biscobisco1882 its because its so much to learn when it coems to mma. You need a solid fundamental base in your base art before you even try to have nuance in that one art. Imagine also having to shore up your holes and then put together a gameplan for your fight and still have to learn and do strength training, endurance training, putting it all together, separating it to sharpen your skills, putting it all together again, separating it and sharpening your skills, then putting it all together snd sharpening your skills in MMA itself. Contrary to what people think, mma guys do compete in specific sports like amateur boxing, kickboxing and bjj tourneys before doing amateur mma.
      How tf do the all rounders even do it?!?!

    I think overhooks are badly underrated you can elbow over the top, it's better for uchi Matas and you take away their arm for striking

    • @EssenceOfTrance
      @EssenceOfTrance 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not experienced with Uchi Matas but I have been practicing them. For a noob like me, it seems like an underhook is better cause you can lift them at the armpit and the leg. Why is an overhook better?

    1:35 is NOT an uchi mata but instead a hip throw. Rei's leg does not elevate anything in that whole sequence, watch it again

    Great analysis, I’m don’t know a lot about grappling but it seems to me that judo is very underutilized in MMA and that seems like a reason overhooks getting unpopular

    • @AveryBlueRemix
      @AveryBlueRemix 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Probably because over/under doesnt happen in space very often. Most the time people end up on the fence and it turns into fence grappling with small time windows for judo play

    • @Sam-ht4og
      @Sam-ht4og 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AveryBlueRemix Great point, I only trained judo for short periods but I think there is place for overhook for elbows and throws but you need control opponents wrist with other hand to keep underhook away and create enough space for strikes/trips
      Few people who utilized this is Peter Yan and being able to punish opponents for trying to smother was huge part of his pressure game

    I find when I’m up against the cage and have an overhook I’m way more likely to be able to break the opponents posture and get my chest over their neck which opens up a lot of attacks and means even if I get taken down I’m in a dominant position and close to the back.
