That's why he put sand in this spot...sand + loamy soil makes for easier scraping and it probably holds more scent. You can get 50# play sand for a couple bucks at any hardware store.
What makes grapevine a more ideal licking branch than other tree branches? About what height would Ted suggest for placing the horizontal rub branch? Thanks!
NO brother! I will delete this. It was answered below. I kept seeing the same repetitive questions and no answers but see you did below. Will delete this comment. Sorry brother. Good LUCK this year! God Bless!
I used Willow and they work Awesome! My Set up is a little different though. I go Horizontal but down then up at an angle and use Three Horizontal Limbs. They Love it but it has to be Fresh Willow. I put mine in here in Mississippi first of September. First of Oct I change them out. I also do not do a Mock Scrape. Just put them on the fringe of a Bedding area close to where an old Scrape was. The place is by a ditch and is a CRP field with 15 Foot Oaks.
Are horizontal rubs better to hunt over or to use in like a sanctuary area where I probably wouldn't hunt as much to use as an attractant to see what bucks are in the area?
Dusty Bowhunter the actual rubbing tree yes. But Ted is doing all his prep work now so he can slide in there and install the rubbing limb in late September without disturbing more of the woods.
So far the only takers on my rub post have been a black bear and an elk. I may have made it a little too big for the deer.... on the bright side, this is the first time I've had elk on camera.
ok thanks. I don't have scotch pine but I'm assuming anything that is a little aromatic and sappy will work. I have some white pine and hemlock I can use.
@@rossdafareyemusic3239 I did watch it smart ass and I have used two different type other then Spruce and they worked fine. Actually another type other then Spruce works GREAT!
I put four of theses out on four different farms the last week of Sept. 2020 , all of them put by long time heavily used mineral sites and even hung a grapevine liking branch . I done every thing the way Ted said right down to the T and mind you these or heavily used area's right next to bedding areas. it is now10/29/20 and none of these have been touched . I can set on a stand and watch 20 deer go by and they just walk by them like there no there . Been hunting for over 60 years so whats the hell is going on.
Rick from mempis no scotch pines here you think three inch ceder wood be good and how long o and bye the way ted nice shot on jawbraker great buck out a here 🔫
Do y’all have more followers on Facebook or TH-cam? How many Facebook followers do y’all have? I’m not a Facebook guy. I try to stay away from social media. Seems like y’all do more stuff on Facebook. Am I missing anything if I dont have Facebook?
Jon St. We do most of our stuff on TH-cam but some things on Facebook and Instagram as well. We record many of our podcasts live on Facebook. Then we edit them and post the shorter versions on TH-cam after the fact. We record them live over there so we can answer questions in real time as we’re having the conversation. You still shouldn’t be missing much by following solely on TH-cam
Thanks for the reply and all the help y’all give. I use y’all stuff in my area. This yr should be a different yr and hopefully for the better and learn some new things along the way.
The dog must be for watching your back with spring bears. Not applicable for public land unless u r making decoy for hunters to get false hope over in a marginal spot. I hang woodvine/grapevine with paracord over travel routes on public land in spots that r very thick & most people don't know they exist.
i willing to bet this is a high fenced property there's no way this is an open property with deer like that around?!! if this is an open range, damn who ever is his neighbor is one lucky neighbor to have deer like this around, but i doubted it.. it's most likely high fence property, this is the only video i doubt, cause so many monster deer in it to be open property unless it's high fence.
Getting to be that time of the year again. I think watching ted is my favorite he is a legend seems so wise
How did you come up with using the scotch pine for the rub and grapevine for the licking branch?
What is the advantage of a horizontal rub? Do you use any scent to get deer started using it?
Does it have to always be a Scotch Pine limb and if not what other types of limbs work?
Could you guys dive deeper into how you pick locations for these horizontal rubs on the podcast? Thanks for all the great information!
Can you just use three old fence post? I have 3 posts that are 3 inches around and 7 feet long would that work?
Another great video . I have only been hunting for a year and you guys have taught me a ton
Is he putting anything on the long. To get the first buck to use it? #2 how did he learn this technique? Thanks
He's not putting any scent on it. He learned it from watching elk rub horizontal trees out west.
The Hunting Public thanks brother. Y'all Killin it!
I was also wandering if a cedar branch will work for the horizontal rubs?
No go to Wal-Mart and get a plastic stick.😨
Nope.use balsa
Will this worknin michigan!?
What was the sand and top soil for? I have never seen that for making a mock scrape.
He answered this question in the video
He did not say why use the Sand though. There is Zero Sand where I would put one up at. Ugh.
That's why he put sand in this spot...sand + loamy soil makes for easier scraping and it probably holds more scent. You can get 50# play sand for a couple bucks at any hardware store.
@@mthompson Or go to a beach.....
The sand keeps the soul from compacting too much. Also helps keep vegetation from growing too well.
Have you ever used cedar?
should the licking branch/vine be directly over(parallel) the end of the horizontal rub or 90 degrees(perpendicular to the horizontal rub)
do you have to add any sent or dose the buck just use it randomly?
Do you ever add any lure to this set up?
Best places for this type of Rub set up would be edges of bedding? Deer trails leading to bedding? Thanks
WNYHuntNFish Ray yes that’s where Ted has the most luck
Would it be good to put something like this in a thermal hub like y'all were hunting in your last video
Yes
Ted when you coming back to crawford meat plant in wayland
Going to try a horizon rubs for the 1st time this year
What makes grapevine a more ideal licking branch than other tree branches? About what height would Ted suggest for placing the horizontal rub branch?
Thanks!
What's the difference and significance between a horizontal and vertical rub?
Does he use any type of scent to get it to started
What is the best type of tree to use for the rub? Where is the preferred location for the horizontal Rub?
Wyatt Michaud Ted prefers Scotch pine and likes to set them up in the middle of bedding areas
How do you pick your site for a horizontal rub
How close from your shooting setup are you placing these ?
Great video. How do I get one of The Hunting Public T-shirt’s?
A Frye thehuntingpublic.com
did we miss one of yours Bill?

We don't have scotch pines in south Texas... would something like this work with mesquite?
Tim D potentially. The trick is you want a tree that has tons of sap. That keeps the limb from drying out quickly. The sap holds scent better as well
Is there anything besides scotch pine you can use. Here on the east coast don't think we have that. Maybe cedar?
cedar works OK but not nearly as well as pine. Any sort of sappy bark is best.
The Hunting Public ok thanks

How high is your stand? It looked fairly low in the video.
Just put two of these out on our property we hunt to see what happens
Pretty neat stuff, arda see if my buddy wants to try that on his property
Could this be useful on public land?
No
Would cedar be good to use?
Would it be to early to go ahead and set the horizontal rub up now?
Dusty Bowhunter the actual rubbing tree yes. But Ted is doing all his prep work now so he can slide in there and install the rubbing limb in late September without disturbing more of the woods.

Do you ever make a rub line out of these? would that even work?
Chase Brouillette no we haven’t tried that
Should the rub tree be freshly cut so it's still a little sappy or can you keep the same one year after year?
fresh. Once they dry out the bucks quit using them.
ok thanks. I don't have scotch pine but I'm assuming anything that is a little aromatic and sappy will work. I have some white pine and hemlock I can use.
Does the horizontal tree have to be spruce or will another species work? Thanx for another great angle on the sport.
They said ask questions but do not answer them?

Would Cedar be the best tree to use in the South?
Michael Gammill it works but not nearly as well as pine

Could you do a video on mock scrapes when the time comes to make them
Are you guys coming to Deer Fest in WI this year? As always another great video. I'll be doing some of these this fall!!
Mitch Mueller yes!
The Hunting Public , all weekend?
Mitch Mueller yep!
Good job hunting
How big are the chunks of timber that you put the horizontal rubs in and how many acres is a horizontal rub good for?
Toothpick size.
Why add sand to scrape underneath top soil??? Why make a horizontal rub instead of just making a vertical rub ?
They seem to prefer rubbing a horizontal limb.
Rick from mempis no scotch pines here you think three inch ceder wood be good and how long o and bye the way ted nice shot on jawbraker great buck out a here 🔫

Hell yea!!!
Ceder should work

What i dislike?Well ppl see some crap like this and they believe it,sad world.😞
Hmmm.put a sideways limb in the woods & hunt over it.😒

"CREEK" not "CRICK"
Now ppl will start using wire and such. The deer will get tangled, well then you can just go shoot them😞
If you did not have Scotch Pine available what would be your second choice of pine?
Dogwood
