I'm a little skeptical of her being evil after these last episodes. Foxes may be tricksters bit they don't always have evil intentions. The story might be setting up a plot twist that she was "the good guy" all along. Also, even though she seems closer to kitsune, cunning fox is common image in myths and legends. Your interpretation is closer to japanese culture but with elves, merlin, morgan and etc. (Dunno about Seng) norse, celtic myths and culture seem more predominant in the story. We might get a completely different interpretation of her.
It really seems like the unicorn warriors have done nothing but hound her through out the centuries, claiming that it’s their selfless duty to ruin countless generations of people to fight their vendetta against the Fox spirit
I’m really glad they chose a kitsune(and from the looks of it, a yako kitsune which are known to be mischievous and malicious). Teach western audiences more about other mythical creatures besides dragons, elves and fairies.
Fun fact: kitsune’s have more tails the more powerful they are, I counted 9 tails on them which is the max amount they can have, so this is a pretty powerful kitsune

The Fox spirit is mostly non destructive to the environment and seems to be trying to avoid civilian casualties. The Unicorns are making no such effort. That said, they are still very new to their powers, and in Emma’s case, actively fighting against them because of the whole “erase you from existence” thing.
Maybe the evils evolved with each defeat. In this world's modern era, being smart and deceptive would be far more effective. Since the modern/steam punk era would have powerful weapons, and technology that efficiently mass produces these weopons that can be used on the evil. Soo it would be better to fool everyone into using those weapons on each other instead of the evil.
spoiler I have a feeling that the fox is actually Malinda's mother. The fox seems to have the same magic as her and has the same color effect when they showed her on that episode when Malinda and her mother fought.
