Thanks for the video. If the distance scale is active, you will see a yellow line marking the beginning and end of the limitation. Looking forward to your next video.

That’s an amazing tutorial. Recently I bought 70-300 Fuji lens and not able to focus near objects. I am confused why not focusing? I turned focus limiter switch on and also the focus range limiter enabled. Now I understand why my lens is not getting focus for the near subjects. I need to disable the range limiter in camera and turn off the focus limiter switch. Finally I found the answer in your valuable tutorial. Thank you so much for this. You are always a guiding force for Fuji users. 🙏🏽

This is like the DISP/BACK button weirdness video you made a few months ago. I couldn’t figure out why I could access the range limiter in stills mode, but not in video mode, even though the feature has both a camera and a video camera icon on it. The user manual was no help, but here you are with the answer: turn off face detect.
    Thank you.
Fuji is an awesome company, but they have a lot of opportunity for improvement when it comes to the user manual. There’s too many instances where we’re left to figure out how something works.

On xt4 at least you can see that the AF range limiter is active if you have AF/MF distance indicators ON in Screen Set-Up menu. It is then displayed as a yellow A-B "segment" beneath the distance scale. Hope it helps.

Chris, another outstanding job. This is yet another example of why your content is indispensable. This is a great feature. I like that it is configurable but also wish that there was something in the FujiFilm autofocus algorithm that mimics this without the need to manually set things. That said, I have no regrets to select Fuji over the other camera brands. Just having this update is proof that I need that this company is different and values its user base. Thanks again for the video. I’m looking forward to more from you.

Thanks Chris, I was preparing to take photos of some helicopters from a balcony and decided it would be smart to use the AF Limiter....problem was that I couldn't enable it for some reason. It would only be enabled in manual mode. I was losing my mind trying to figure out what setting was preventing it from working in AF-S or AF-C. I Googled this setting and your video pops. You mention that it doesn't work with Face/Eye autodetect on! Problem solved. Thank you!

I couldn’t set the custom limiter range on my 23mm 1.4 no matter how many times I tried! I thought I was going crazy until I figured it out. I’ve discovered that I can only change the settings if I go through the menu options. I have assigned a button to access the focus limiter and if I try to set custom range via the button it doesn’t work, even though the option to set it is there. It just doesn’t change.
Once I got it working I noticed that there is actually an indicator that the range limiter is on - there’s a yellow line that displays the limited range under the focal distance scale in the viewfinder and back screen in all 3 focussing modes.

Thanks for another GREAT video. I use the green filter all the time for assessing vegetation ground cover. I take these jpgs and analyze the photo, which covers 1 m^2 the GIS software can classify the percent of the area that is green which equates to vegetation cover. It provides a rapid assessment that tells us land condition. So it's more than just for "fun".

This is a very useful thing for sports or like you said for birds etc. Choosing one of the pre-sets for sports works pretty well no need for custom. Most high end sports lenses come with this feature built in. but this is a good tutorial on how to set it up if you need it.

Thx for your work! Nice add on but, permit me to be critical: why not adding value’s with the dials? In the studio this would be a great add on. Just enter the max depth of your studio and turn on face detection. Especially now withe the wide aperture lenses this would speed up the work like creazy!

Gonna try it with my street photography stuff, it was pretty annoying when camera focused constantly on the buildings far away, not the people. On the other hand, idk how it'll work without face detection, but my hope is good, and it's nice that AF limiter doesn't cancels out when you zoom, but setting a far point can be tricky, let's say from mdf to 10-15 meters.

  • @paulm8157

Distance scale display might be used as an indicator that focus range limiter is active. Potential issue was noted in 10/3/2020 YT post on David Hoult’s YT channel, “Setting the Focus Limiter on the Fiji XT-3 w/firmware 4”. Distance discrepancy. Wish you have the time to check out that post and give us your thoughts, Chris. What am I missing?

  • @mrrobbienh

Good effort ! I would just point out though that your verbal example of when it is most likely useful is setting a range which is in the infinity area (which is how I want to use it - tennis, football etc) - for example in the 40m-60m range. You then set it up for a range within 0.7m-1.2m !!?

2 annoying points you mentionned that Fuji ought to fix next week really:

2.no icon on display to show range focus is ON

it's a very nice feature, I use it for street photography to take people with a range between 1m to 4m but it would be nice if we could add the face and eyes detection in the range or even for portrait photoshot because the model is always in the same range of distance. May be a future firmware update !

Is there a way to have a few SETS of settings and switch between them quickly? For instance, I shoot sea turtles on the water and could limit mly focus range to beyond 10' everytime. I would also change focus mode, set ISO to a certain range, white balance to a natural sky etc. I also frequently shoot geckos in my yard (Maui) and shoot inside 10' with slower shutter speed etc. If there's nothing like what I described to switch quickly, what do you suggest as a strategy?

Hi pal2tech, I love your fresh humor and your interesting Fuji-tips. And maybe I have discovered a bug: If I put the range limiter on a function button, then the custom setting can not be changed. My Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 with the Fringer adapter does not work with the limiter even though the AF works very well, so the lens probably does not communicate the focusing distance? Anyway, this limiter is very good for video!

Hi Chris! Very interesting as your content excels! How would I use it for sports action? For example, on my 100-400 I can select 'Full' or 5 meters and on. Was this introduced with the same purpose?
Could you provide, when you can, a practical example?
    Cheers\Carlos

If you have missed a firmware update, will loading the newest version also update any firmware you may have missed?
Thanks for your help and your videos. Enjoy your weekend.

Yes it does. You can update from any older firmware version.

Considering it shares the same sensor, it's odd that this feature isn't on the X-T30.

Instead of using the focus ring you can also use the instant AF button (standard AF-L).
