I dabble in cars, but I am primarily an armor modeller. My current project is a 1/35 scale King Tiger with a full interior. It's a monster of a project. The options for displaying the interior are limited. I'm not one of those " well, I know it's there" modelers, so I would like to display my work but I don't relish cutting the tank hull and turret open so you can see inside. The light bulb went on when I saw this video. Maybe I can use magnets to hold some of the hull and turret parts on, but allow me to disassemble them to display the interior and reassemble to park the tank on my shelf. Nobody has discussed this in the tank modeller forums, so maybe a new concept in armor modelling? I'll give it a shot and see how it works. Anyway, great channel. Always willing to learn from a brother modeller!
Hi. Thanks for this inspirational video. Will definitely try to use more small magnets with future projects. So far I have only used magnets and thin metal receiver plate on a 1/24 scale agricultural tractor model to secure the hood to keep it from moving when it was turned upside down. If the car bonnet (hood) is very close to the engine block the magnet(s) can be inserted into the top area of the engine itself before the parts are glued together so they cannot be seen. All this can be tested dry fit before applying final cement, cleaning and final painting. I would like to experiment with inserting them into the tyres (tires), if they are hollow before fitting them onto the wheels to see if the model can be placed on a display stand, or diorama base with corresponding magnets (or thin metal sheet) underneath the stand or hidden into a diorama base. Hopefully the model can then be displayed stand alone or placed back on its base.
Interesting video idea! My favorite tools at the moment are a hobby knife and a sanding board. For jigs, I just adapt whatever I need at the time; I'd have to think on this...

I have used magnets on my dioramas to open areas where I have batteries for the display. They provide easy access to the batteries when they need to be changed! Happy days and model on! 😎
I have an old Revell Sedan Delivery model that I foolishly altered (sawed off the front fenders and hood) before I had a real plan for a tilt-hood gasser. But I've been wondering about how 🧲 magnets might help in assembling and locating my new cowl and firewall. What you've shown here will probably work. Thanks!
Working on an F-18 Hornet and my plan is to use some of these magnets to have the ordinance removable, mostly because I think the lines of the jet look better without all the pylons, tanks, and missiles. But your use as hinges got me thinking about using them for movable airbrakes on some other jet projects I have in the queue. Quality tips, Doug.

I use neo magnets to attach aircraft models to plastic display bases when I want the aircraft to be displayed in flight. I can easily remove the plane from the base when taking that model to a show.
Thank you for the hinge pivot tip. I have been using neodymium magnets for latches, and to hold parts together in aircraft, car and armor models, but it never occurred to me to use them as hinge pivots. 👍

Yet another great video I just stumbled across. I’ve been using magnets for some time, particularly to hold doors and other panels shut. I don’t consider myself to have a “great” mind and won’t say I’m at Doug’s level (great kinda think alike), but I did figure out using magnets as a hinge point for the box doors on a box truck I’ve been working on for years. As always, great stuff, Doug!
Nice. I fly balsa free flight airplanes and we use magnets for the nose block alinement as well as the wings sometimes. They will have a crash sooner or later so it's better if the wing pops off. The same for a landing gear. No need to have one during a flight if it's a WW2 fighter, but for display they can be snapped back on.

I’m trying thick aluminum foil for my door hinges… I have a way to perfectly replicate and the material is .080 thick… it should hold a pin if the holes are perfect 😎
I've got a small package of neo mags to use for the cowling on a few 500cc/MotoGP builds. Seems like the trick is using one neo mag on one body part, then glue a small piece of steel on the other side? Probably overthinking that one! Thanks again :D
I'm currently working on a 58 impala. Chopped the whole front end off and made it a magnetic flip up. I'm having a hard time trying to come up with a hood hinge idea using magnets. Would you happen to have any insight on that? Love the builds and great ideas! 😊
Great tips on magnet use. I’ve used a few on touring car builds to hold roll cages in place. Not thought of using them for hinges! Can I ask, will the magnet allow for some ‘slide’ as the door opens to clear the opening?
Suppose one is traveling to a event to compete, how would you ship a model? Mine seem to be fragile and the thought of a judge picking up my vehicle to turn it over freaks me out also. How do you make models rigid is my second question sir.
Hi David, Neodymium magnets have a rating system but I don't know what strength are the ones I use, mine are not labeled as such. I just get 2mm x 1mm magnets and they work fine for modeling.

I have used them on customers car that I did so he could have 3 different wheel & tire options so he coukd decide what wheel & tire combo he wanted on his real 69 Camaro.
Hi Doug! I’m doing this very thing in trying to latch the doors on my ‘68 Shelby Green Hornet WIP. I have one of those magnets embedded in the door jamb, and on the body part of the door jamb, I have a pin with a head on it. The pin goes inside of the striker I have on the door with the magnet, and the door closes with a nice little “click”. I wish I had learned this while I was building a mid-engine Corvair. Finished successfully but magnets would have helped.

Some magnets come with a drill bit. My tip is to use a plastic tweezers.
I use a drill bit close to or slightly larger than the magnet. I prefer epoxy, but cyanoacrylate super glue works well too.

A small piece of steel on one side works well! If you need to, use two magnets for more strength.

i was gonna use these types of magnets to make a drag race diorama where the cars front ends would lift off the ground.

I use glue: two part epoxy or cyanoacrylate (super glue)
