Great presentation. I like the rythm of the pics/talk and the choice of photographers. I learned a lot.

Hey thanks! That's great feedback, I appreciate it. The slower pace isn't for everyone but I am not a fan of most TH-cam pacing so here we are. Attention spans seem so short these days, but it's hard to learn anything meaningful in a hurry!

Thank you! That video itself is also a background primer for the other four in the series, I like to go a little deep on things when it’s something I’m really into :)

Awesome video! A note on the painting content spectrum: it's more accurate/precise to describe it as 'non-objective vs representational'. Those two terms better represent the aims of painting. On one end you have the non-objective (entirely based on or about formal language), and on the other you have representational (clearly or strictly featuring person, place, or thing). 'Abstract' and 'figurative' both fit on that spectrum and neither are extremes.
It's also worth noting that conceptual photography and Conceptual Art (the 1960s-70s movement) are nearly mutually exclusive things. 'Conceptual' is a tricky word in art-talk for that reason.

Thanks for writing that out, my thoughts pretty much exactly :)
"Abstract" is still something that has its roots in perception, even though it may have been abstracted so far it may be impossible to discern what is being represented.
Whereas non-objective or nonrepresentional art does not depict anything from the outer world to begin with.

Loved your comment at 10:45 about painting starting from a blank and conceptual photography starting with an image then subtracting (though I'd say we add as well in things like photoshop and digital painting). Newbie myself in this space, I look forward to watching your other videos.

@@VinnyLePes as a painter i would add that some painters, myself included, are keen to encourage accidental marks in the painting as much s possible, to reduce the overall emphasis on intention and allow the reality to enter the arena. I always think of painting as a conversation between the artist and the materials.
