I remember back in the late 90's in Elementary school, our music teacher had us dancing to this song back in the day. Been wanting to know who did this song for so many years. Finally, the TH-cam algorithm granted me my wish.
Probably one of the first dance-pop songs, even it has a typical 70s disco-beat. I say this is a dance-pop song and not post-disco, because post-disco is more R'n'B oriented.
On this day in 1980 {March 1st} the Manhattan Transfer performed "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone" on the late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... One month later on April 19th entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #30 and spent 12 weeks on the Top 100... It reached at #25 in the U.K. Between 1975 and 1984 the group had seven Top 100 records; with their biggest hit being "The Boy from New York City", it reached #7 in 1981... R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012}...
I agree, the music of the '70's and '80's can't be beat!!!!!!!!!! I don't even listen to the music today, I listen to stuff from the '70's and '80's A LOT!!!!!!!!!!
Received my Bachelor's at Binghamton University and spent - and still spend - plenty of time in Binghamton NY with my girlfriend of 11 years who's now is sadly deceased. Rod Serling is definitely the favorite son of this very different city. This is the place where Rod derived / devised fodder for the many episodes of Twilight Zone. No question, there is a real magic still in Binghamton and there's a brand new statue of Rod. Check out 'The 'Rod Serling Memorial Foundation' should you dig The Twilight Zone ! ✨️
Absolutely, Jay always came up with the most amazing stuff in his solos. I could always recognize his work and he never ceases to amaze at his creativity in how he approaches each solo and makes it fit like the song was written around it just to have a home for the solo...
Comme pour BIRDLAND et d'autres bijoux musicaux,ce groupe unique nous emporte dans son tempo, ces voix et ces vocalises à nul autre pareil, pures merveilles de composition, leurs chansons méritent de figurer au panthéon.Puissant! J'adore!Encore!
Eric---I agree, that solo is played by the amazing session player Jay Graydon, who also produced the LP "Extensions" where this track was from. He also did the solos on Steely Dan's "Peg" among other tracks on the "Aja" LP.
Totally agree. One great solo. Love the song but bought the record because of the amazing guitar work. Thanks for letting me know who did it. If sounds like he overdubbed it to sound like twin guitars playing.
I remember this song came out right around the time i had just finished reading A Wrinkle in Time by Ursula K Leguin. This song kinda goes with that story.
They look like they escaped the Phantom Zone. With sets from the Time Tunnel, Logans Run & the three convicts from Superman I & II. LOL Weird but cool. I remember this from 79 when I was 17 & 18.
I just looked up the lyrics. I had not idea that Glen Miller and his trombone were in there - never noticed in all the hundreds of times I heard the song.
Amazing how a "Jazz" ensemble who put "Disco" and "New Wave" together, added a little guitar and made it work. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The funky bass line got me balls swinging, the piano playing is slick and Jay Graydon’s solo is the star of the show
Pure Magical Fun! Peaked as high as No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts in early 1980. Great, funky post disco tune.

The musicality is off the charts such a great rhythm for such a great sing
That’s a pretty good Rod Serling impression!
TZ and Manhattan Transfer. Oh Pure joy, when Jazz meets Pop and Rock! and Musicality is of the essence of such a pure voice and timeless rhythm!
I think this is the precise moment when "Disco" met "New Wave", and the 80's was launched.
Probably one of the first dance-pop songs, even it has a typical 70s disco-beat.

“Coke it It!”

Now he resides with his baritone, in this mystic unknown zone. Thank you so much, Tim Hauser!!!

No you are on the money ..todays bands groups have no Individualism LOL I bet they cannot even spell it :)
It sounds great as ever. Janis Siegel is impeccable!
Ahhhh....Another great lost 80's hit from the Manhattan Transfer in 1980, Twilight Zone!!!!! :)

This song is epic and gives you chills. Great harmonies and music from a classic quartet. Once you hear it, the twilight zone comes to get u.

Watching the TZ New Years marathon on the SCIFI channel. I figured it was only appropriate for me to listen to this song between episodes!
I'm going to see them in Tel-Aviv tonight!
I can't wait!!!

Love the way she does vocals on this song. Looks like that set was sold to Paramount for use in Star Trek the motion picture.
Oh glory, when I got to see them again two years ago and had them sign my concert t from 1985!!!
I remembered listened to that song on the radio, back in my Halloween days.

これ、今風にリメイクしても、売れるんじゃないだろうか?
Totally agree. One great solo. Love the song but bought the record because of the amazing guitar work. Thanks for letting me know who did it. If sounds like he overdubbed it to sound like twin guitars playing.

Awesome - I Love It !!!
めっちゃくちゃかっけー
If Donald Fagen did videos, this man would be good to produce Fagen's "Tomorrow's Girls".
I liked the sound of an obsolete computer to describe the dimension of mind.
As much as I generally disliked disco, they made this work. It was always on the jukebox, and always playing.
Disco rules!
R.I.P. Twilight Zone legdary writer Richard Matheson!

You do realize he's imitating Rod Serling?
one of their band members dressed as Rod Serling. XD
Yes that was Mister Alan Paul, who interestingly enough always reminded me of a younger and sexier Rod Sterling.
Except this was 1980
