I wouldn't advise attacking the bandits until you have at least 15 spearmen, preferably 20. At that point you should be able to handle the camps with minimal or no loss and make some good cash. BTW there is a bandit camp quite close to your town in the adjacent region, closer than the one you were looking at. Also you can't hire mercenaries until you build your manor and have money in the treasury not regional wealth.
