- Scene from one of my favourite childhood films ‘The Rugrats Movie’ where Stu and Drew Pickles argue in the basement over Stu’s lifestyle, while Stu and Grandpa Lou are busy building his latest invention described as “The Perfect Children’s Toy” - The Reptar Wagon, for a toy design contest held by the Reptar Corporation in Japan to win $500.

No I still agree with Stu. He actually is able to make money what he does and Drew rides on his wife’s coat tail while selling crap like the ear wiz or something. If it wasn’t for Stu, they wouldn’t get vacations like they do. Not to mention, Drew did bankrupt Chaz.
Just pretend the episode Chuckie is Rich was never made, okay! Anyway, as an adult myself, I agree with both Stu and Drew here.

@@Kaboomboo Like I said: Just pretend the episode Chuckie is Rich was never made! It was the writers' fault, not Drew's!
500$ is nothing, even in 1998. Drew was absolutely right.
maybe it was a matter of specific achievement in investing something
Well that and the publicity cause if he won the contest and the reptaor corporation shows his work to others he could get a third party money from any other company that wanted him to make a custom made toy.
well when it comes to things like this...that 500 could lead to alot more...its presumed that the reptar corp is some multi national corperation,so landing a deal with them to say, mass produce even a single product would mean HUGE royalties as stu is the origional creator of the toy. hed be taking a cut for every one they sold,OR theyed offer a large sum deal to by the rights to his design.

A good start, considering Stu’s lack of savings
Stu has built a weapon to surpass Metal Gear.
Now that I think about it, this released the same year as MGS1 too 😂
SO, stu was the original seto kaiba. Turned weapons into a toy business
Stu should get a military contract instead of making toys
Oh my God, Metal Gear!!

He may be going about it the wrong way and is being a bit pushy on the subject but Drew is only speaking out of concern for his brother and his family.
But Drew rides off the coat-tails of his wife's success, and doesn't understand not everyone can be a time puncher like him. Stu does have a point about the contest, and being artistic is only seen as valuable when it yields results.
Lol. Yeah he *SURE* does spend time with his family and totally wasn’t spineless around Angelica.
Uh huh. Suuuure.
It’s a shame that Reptar wagon never officially became a thing. We all wanted that as a kid. Not the little toy replicas.
It shoots fire. There's a reason it never made it to market.
I guess people are forgetting the preceeding 5 seasons of Rugrats where nearly every single one of Stu's Inventions had some defect or quality control wrong with it...
That's not COMPLETELY true. There was one episode where Stu got an order for 15,000 dolls, which must have been expensive for the company buying them. And Stu made his own assembly machine so he wouldn't have to pay another company to help make the dolls.
And the machine WORKED, he just didn't realize it was in reverse when he tried it out the first time.
This movie has aged somewhat. In today's economy, Stu and Didi could NOT afford a two-story house with a basement, and raise two kids, without BOTH parents having an income.
what do you mean? at the time it was easily affordable, so time passing changes nothing on their housing situation just because it's extra ridiculous now
Situations like this lead us to the 2008 financial crisis.
Plus no insurance! How did they afford to deliver Dil? Plus vet visits for Spike
I found out last year that Stu and Didi don't even own the house, it's Lou's
That's why he says "can't a man work in his own basement"
Stu's an artist stuck living at his dad's house, so that part of the show surprisingly still holds up
@@air-head3961 The house did belong to Stu and Didi in the old cartoon. It belongs to Grandpa Lou in the reboot.
I totally agree with Drew in this scene. Dreams alone can't pay for the bills, groceries and insurance. Couldn't Stu get a part-time job at least?

The adults are the best thing about Rugrats, they’re weirdly relatable and I like their relationships.
A while ago someone made a “Rugrats without Rugrats” cut of the show, where they painstakingly went through the first 6 seasons and made an edit of each thats’s only the scenes/storylines related to the adults. It’s genuinely enjoyable.
Got a link?
Like a 90s sitcom.
Rugrats is a show you eventually grew out of as a kid and didn't really think about again until you were an adult and searched clips of it on TH-cam just to relate to the adults now instead of the babies
@pencil018 As a new father, I related so hard to that scene in the movie of them being unable to calm Dill down after 4 weeks while Didi is asleep at the sink cleaning yet another bottle. Lol It was the first scene that came back to memory.
My brother and I used to laugh our asses off at these two when we were little now we've turned into them. 😂
Even though this is a cartoon but I do understand where Drew was coming from
I think stu did the extra fire foam on purpose you can tell by his expression
Considering Drew once bankrupted Chaz, I think Stu is making a wise choice by refusing his brothers financial advice.
The fact that Grandpa isn't siding with Drew seems to indicate it.
and if i recall didint he bankrupt chazz deliberately?
@dakotastein9499 really the product he invested in just was bad. Instead of cleaning earwax it somehow made more
Grampa is smart here in this case he's better off playing Switzerland
Drew is right to an extent. With no insurance, saving, and another kid in a way. Stu should be looking for something more stable. He should at least get a part-time job that offers decent benefits. However, the only thing I don't agree with Drew is pushing Stu to work an office job. Not everyone can work an office job. If I were Drew, I would encourage Stu to look into blue-collar jobs. With his skills, he could get into welding. He could also create his own inventions on the side.

It turns out Stu and Drew didn't always get along just fine, but they're still and always be brothers, and they always care about each other. Despite their polar lifestyles.
Stu and Drew couldn't imagine the invention would save the life of their children later.
This is one of the earlier scenes of the movie that really made things feel a lot more serious and real compared to the average interaction between the adults on the show. Complete silence, no music to soften their argument for the entire first half with the mystique of a subject matter I didn't quite understand as a kid. There are so many little decisions in how scenes like these were directed to heighten the cinematic impact of the movie as a whole as opposed to the show.
Drew does have potential. Pretty sure his income only comes from fixing his neighbors' stuff though
As I watch this now as an adult I realize how right Drew was.

1:32 look how he got his revenge and stop his arguing escalated by spraying the fire extinguisher on him
I still have my theory that Stu is an underground arms manufacturer. That's why the Reptar mobile can shoot flames and, in Rugrats in Paris, he invented a fully functioning mech.
0:04 Stu & Drew: WHY CAN'T YOU LISTEN TO ME!?
We’re talking about a real job Stu, with benefits!
If they're arguing, they've got show the lessons.
Got TO show the lessons?
The funniest thing about this scene is that in the 2nd movie, the Reptar Corporation gives Stu a massive loan to construct a gigantic animatronic version of Reptar and the reason why it keeps breaking down in the middle of reshoots is because the people who were suppose to build it on time and under budget refused to adhere to Stu's designs because they thought Stu was insane with his schematics. There is a scene in the movie where Stu is complaining how the reason why the engine keeps malfunctioning during the directing process is because theyre not using Rubber Bands because they have the elastic capacity to keep everything together to prevent Reptar from exploding.
So when you factor all that in its a lose/lose situation. Stu is way too smart to be working a regular job but no one who isnt insane would hire a man who builds things like Stu
0:43 At least they can both agree their dad gets on their nerves 😂 I mean look at their faces 😂

The only rivalry part about their brotherly relationship is that Drew believes that Stu needs to get a real job. Whereas Stu believes that Drew is breathing down his neck.
Their fighting moments aren't a part of their rivalry. All family members have funny fighting moments!
Even though they funnily fight a lot, both Drew and Stu love each other to demise!
I'd honestly be more interested in a movie about Stu's financial problems more than the babies' adventure in the woods
Drew really cared about his brother to yell at him like that at the end of the day
Papa's: drew stop yelling at stu we both know he has his own ambition's for his family, and instead of yelling at him why not help him invest in his projects sense your doing so well your his big brother, and he always taking care of your daughter for free.
Papa's: stu stop getting angry at drew his looking out for u and ur wife ,and soon to be two kids you got three mouths to feed so you got to start focusing more on them more then ever.

Seeing the state the Reptar wagon is in at this point I’m actually surprised Stu actually managed to finish it with Dil constantly crying his head off
Even as a kid, I thought a $500 prize was lame. Should've at least been $50,000
Drew could've been more diplomatic in making his point, but he's 100% right. Stu does need a real job with benefits/Insurance, and just work on his inventions in his free time.
Too bad both stew and Louis’s voice actors died. I really enjoyed their performances.

Both of them have their own points. Drew's case, you definitely need a stable job to pay for necessities. Especially when it comes to taking care of your own kids. Stu, shows that at the very least you have to take risks in life, especially when it comes to making your own company.

The Reptar Wagon is a pretty impressive toy even without the fire. It is able handle extremely rough terrain at high speeds, extremely sturdy and can easily float on water. It survived abuse that would have broken most cars let alone toy wagons
So, what exactly does Stu do, invent something and sell it to the highest bidder? Because if he's selling a concept and not getting royalties, he's getting screwed. The guy who came up with the original GI Joe concept would have been a millionaire if he took the 1% royalty deal instead of just the 100k.

"You've got no insurance..."
OG fans will recall Didi saying in the "Dog Broomer" that she and Stu agreed on no more insurance after they "got taken last year." Only for them to wind up getting scammed at the end of that episode. Because instead of going through a reputable agency, these two knuckleheads keep buying insurance from random salesmen who show up on their doorstep. And when _somehow_ that doesn't work out, they go, "Screw it, no more insurance _ever!"_
Drew's right.
Funny thing about both of these do is there, right. Now, Stu is right doesn’t wanna waste his life working for somebody, especially considering that he wants to do things his way, like any other great inventor living the American dream. However, there’s nothing wrong with having a job on the side along with supporting your family. So I feel like Stu can do both. Now, Drew yes, while it’s true, his brother makes a point about his brothers financial situation. That makes sense you don’t have any income with no health insurance along with another kid on the way. There’s nothing wrong with having a job there but however, he’s telling him to give up on this dream that’s not right either. So through it all they’re both right and wrong.
1:35 1:36 that’s funny Drew the Foam Man 😅 I hope he’s not in a jolly happy soul
50/50 on drew. In that moment yes he is correct especially since stu has a new kid on the way and $500 can’t cover everything needed to take care of a kid and the contest doesn’t sound like Stu will get royalties for the reptar wagon. On the other hand drew isn’t the wise one with financial investments since he lost Chaz’s 10 million instantly by investing in some ear cleaning machine.
Maybe stew should consider working for the military as a weapons designer since that was a pretty smart idea using fire for children’s toy

I love this part because to me when ever I see Drew, and Stu fight, or argue, or try to out do the other. I see Angelica, and Tommy this could be them in 30 years. Not Tommy or Dil who get along pretty good. No it is Angelica, and Tommy who are so much like thier dads when with each other going from getting along to fighting over anything even in the spin off if I remember right Grandpa Lou said they fight like thier dads or something to that effect.
I wonder if Grandpa Lou used to fight with his brother Sparky.

Fighting siblings or fighting cousins. I think Angelica is a lot more like her grandfather's cousin Miriam than her dad Drew. Drew may have bullied his brother Stu sometimes when they were kids, but I'm sure he was less naughty than his daughter. Stu and Drew do get along sometimes like in the episode "Ice Cream Mountain" and in the pilot episode "Tommy's First Birthday" Drew apologized to Stu for ripping the ears off of his favorite stuffed toy Tony Bow-wow and that he was only four years old then.
