  • Today, Lake Merritt is known as the Crown Jewel of Oakland, but it used to be called by a different name: the Lake of 1,000 Smells. To figure how to make it a swimming lake, it’d be good to know how it became un-swimmable in the first place.

    Wetlands and swamps are amazing cleaners. Another natural way would be to introduce Zebra mussels to filter the water but that introduces invasive species issue.

    • @owenfrank5671
      @owenfrank5671 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly, not to mention the wetland that is now Lake Merritt used to slowly filter/drain its water out to the bay. Oakland would do well to introduce more water plants into the edges of the lake, that would be an easy and inexpensive first step to give the Lake resources for self cleaning.

    Came here after doing a search of Lake Merritt due to the ongoing algae bloom that’s killing all the marine life 😔 … I live two blocks from the lake rn plus ever since I moved to Oakland in the late aughts it’s been my and many other people’s personal treasure. Here’s hoping the lake bounces back! Even if I never want to swim in it 😝
