Hello chaps. Fulton Mackay, who played Ben in the film, was my uncle. He modelled the character of Ben on my father. I come from the far north west of the highlands, roughly where the fictional "Ferness" is depicted on the map at the beginning of the film. What I found amazing about Local Hero was how it touched so many people. For many years afterwards thousands of tourists from all over the world made their way to these locations, Pennan on the Moray coast and Morar beach on the west coast, in an attempt to try and grasp the life offered in the film. I suppose it makes us look at ourselves, what life is really all about. Is that Mac making the phone ring at the end? You may assume so, if that is what you want. The beauty of the film. With Ben, well in the highlands there used to be many of these older guys, including my own dad, who looked like simple men but would often be 10 steps ahead of you. Thanks for the wonderful review guys.

I saw this in the theater (US) and I got the somewhat bleak Houston ending. Mac on his balcony gazing wistfully. It hit me hard then.
Later in life I was an IT contractor with a specialized skill-set in demand and ended up working gigs in far flung places far from home for an extended period of time - for the duration of the project. I would get "home", pick up my mail, and pay my bills, and crash out for a hard sleep. I once sent a check for three months of advance condo association dues from Reykjavik because I didn't know when I would be back next.
When a long gig ends and you are back "home" it is both familiar and alien. Home is no longer home after awhile, it's a waystop, a mailbox. I perfectly understood then the Houston ending then.
When you go live in a random city out of an extended stay hotel room or a pre-furnished corparate-leased apartment for many months for a living, the concept of home is ephemeral.
I watch Local Hero at least once a year. One of my favorite movies.

I believe there are many 'Local Heroes' in the film. Mack is because of his bag of money, Gordan is for guiding the entire process. Victor is because his love for the village and the village's (particularly the womenfolk) love for him. Marina and Danny are both the Heroes who actually save the town by giving Happer the option of building the Institute. And of course Ben for befriending Happer and giving him the Hope he needed to change.

Fine review...this is probably my favorite movie of all time. For what it's worth, I think that the psychologist emphasizes how sense of self is central to the meaning of life as well as the inanity of modern culture...as well as raising a few other topics.(on top of the other emphasis of the analyst is parodying the psychology of the late 1970s perhaps.. and less like the watch going off at conference time than it might have been in 1983). Every scene to this movie makes us contemplate what "being" is..and the richness of being, with the "doing" a bit irrelevant as long as there is something to do (a thought echoed by the idea that even the beachcomber has an occupation that is a must to existence). I won't wax too poetic..great to see you all appreciating the many important subtle things like the motor bike and rabbit etc, and collecting for the phone calls etc)

It is my favorite movie, tied with The Year of Living Dangerously
It's the only film I've seen that has a married couple totally hot for each other
I loved Burt Lancaster in it
It really is a perfect film

ahh i love your reviews, never heard of this film but damn do you guys make it sound enjoyable. I love the format of your reviews. Its just two guys giving the average viewers reaction, rather than trying to be a "professional" critic. But you also have the film knowledge to give us more than just a reaction. I usually listen to your reviews like a podcast but love the fact that I can look down and be sucked into the visual aspects like clips from the film or your own facial expressions. You guys have a truly captivating show, thanks for all the videos!

I've always believed Mac is the Local Hero. He makes them all rich, and then at the end, just as he's getting into the helicopter, that one guy asks for his autograph.

Yes, a subtle and gentle gem of a film which plays against your expectations. I always thought the Local Hero was Mac, he doesn't start off as one but becomes one in the end. I was looking for your review of the Lego movie in preparation for Lego Batman but couldn't find it, has it been removed?

I've always loved this movie, ever since I first watched it some 20 years ago (I've been following Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits for even longer).
Thank you for this excellent review! You really made me want to go and rewatch it, so that's what I plan on doing this Friday evening. With a stiff shot of good whiskey. :)

Thanks guys! I'll be certain to check this out! I'm a Burt Lancaster fan too. My all time favorite with him is The Hallelujah Trail. I would love to see you guys do a review of that. I first saw it when I was seven years old and I cried from laughing. to this day that movie will make me giggle my fucking ass off.

How in the hell do you not understand that life couch continuing to harass him is intentional comedy. It's literally the best bit in the film and you eant to cut it. Get some taste.
