    I love Dr. Greenberg. Excellent scholar. Very intelligent but doesn't talk over his audience's collective head. Just articulates his points clearly and makes the subject interesting. His view might be just outside the mainstream today but in a decade or so scholars will be talking as if it's always been understood as the norm. Anyone questioning his view should go read Mark and then read John. It's quite revealing.
    Thanks for having him on again Jacob!

      Occam's razor says it's most likely very late John knew early Mark. But makes a book, I suppose.

      Sure John knew the other stuff and considered it worthless crap. None of the unnamed authors would have agreed that anything but their story is true, and all would strongly disagree to end up with these false stories in a collection.

    From the Koine Greek name Lā́zāros (Λᾱ́ζᾱρος), derived from the Hebrew name Eleazar (אלעזר, Elʿāzār) meaning "God has helped".

    This was very interesting to me. Topics like this really fills out the context of things.
    It’s awkward to hear that formal biblical scholarship is so slow to go forward, and with pet subjects being addressed, rather than the subjects that will reveal more ….
    What is really needed is a maximum minimum of the history of Jesus. That is, piling in all the books, but discarding everything that doesn’t pass the sensibility test, or that is known to be a later confection, or that is obviously based on the OT and other older stories. This means deletion of the resurrection, and deletion of all the miracles and allegories, and deletion of the birth of Jesus and the magi etc . This should give a residual minimum historical Jesus, and the years between which this history likely happened.
    Attempting to put everything in the bucket for the historical Jesus can never go anywhere without getting hopelessly bogged down.
    Jacob, has anyone perhaps already compiled such a maximum minimum?

      It is null.
      All the events, names, quotes, quips, and parables borrow older, and contemporary, sources. Or have a clear polemical and symbolic purpose.
      That's why historicists don't follow your tact. Everyone who does become mythicism agnostics. A historical person may have done these things. 🤷🏻

    • @varus5596
      @varus5596 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If what you say is correct, then how is it that the consensus of biblical scholars, including Bart Erhman, is that there was an historical Jesus of some type, to some extent? They say there are a lot of references, but obvious the “references” are all in one captive “place”. I consider the Josephus account as being a forged addition.

    • @varus5596
      @varus5596 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If the historical Jesus is not an historical person, but an historical account of books about an imaginary person, that puts the biblical scholars in a pretty bad light …

    Gary, you say that the author of Luke did not know the gospel of John, and that the author of John did not know of author of Luke. You then infer from this that there must have been an alpha gospel. But what about the possibility that the author of Luke and the author of John knew each other? There is strong evidence that they were both close to Ephesus.

    • @Joesledge13
      @Joesledge13 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      It’s more like the “authors” of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John. They didn’t write them. And these unknown authors added there names later for historical context. Just like with Paul’s letters, we don’t know who these other authors or scribes are and still have these writings in the chapters and books in the Bible.

      If you didn’t know mark, Matthew, Luke, John and Paul didn’t write the gospels. You are really behind in Bible history 😅 especially watching videos discussing the very topic of who wrote the gospels and understanding the context in what the writers meant.

    • @TorianTammas

      Every story about Iesous exists because they considered what was produced before as crap. Luke (no author mentioned but just as reference tool) and Mathew copied what was useful to them, changed whatever they like, threw out stuff, and made stuff up. So, the idea that they did not copy each other but have some other fictional source is unnecessary
