I own it and at this price point it has no competition. I also own the CXN. In all honesty, I had given up on Cambridge, but they have come back with a solid line. My next purchase is the CD transport, not because I need it, but because I want to own all three pieces. Aesthetically the units are beautifully crafted. Lunar grey is also a really nice finish.

I got the CXA81 when it came out in Jan 2020 and I think it's superb.
My set up is as follows
Rega P8 (new version) turntable with Origin live Encounter tonearm and Hana ML cart.
    Rega Phono Aria preamp.
KEF LS50 speakers or Sennheiser Momentum MK II headphones.
The sound i get through my speakers and headphones is phenomenal for all types of music, I'm not sure why some people have commented that heavy rock will not sound good on this amp, the opposite is true, my RL Hot mix of Led Zep II and ACDC Back in Black vinyl sound incredible as does heavy rock from cds or digital files, same goes for electronic music.
For cds and data discs I use a Sony UHP-11 Blu ray player as it reads every type of cd/dvd/blu ray disc plus a usb port, the sound wasn't great using rca cables so I changed to using a single digital cable bypassing the dac in the Sony player and using the dac in the amp, the upgrade in sound is unbelievable and is the best I've ever heard cds sound, I've even started buying cds again now that I have such good sound with this method.
My PC is also hooked up to the CXA81 through usb and again the sound is stunning especially using foobar 2000 to play SACD files.
Don't be put off by the people saying heavy rock won't sound good on this amp, they obviously have never heard it and are making false claims without evidence, the only issue I had with it was it sounding a little bright for the first couple of weeks but then a full sound emerged with a glorious bass and soundstage.

A good friend who sells CA equipment told me most people buy the CXA81 as part of a bundle with the CXN V2. Sometimes they'll upsell a CXC CD transport but a lot of buyers are now pure streaming. They don't even own CDs or vinyl. An integrated amp makes perfect sense in that context. I heard these driving a smooth pair of Tannoy XT8Fs and it blew me away. Great timing, superb detail and just the right amount of vintage AB warmth. It sounded like a much more expensive system.

I have the CX trio, I’m very happy with it. It was bought to replace an ageing 90s System. I’m very much invested in CDs but thought it was about time I tried streaming too. (Which is great for finding new music or old music that you’ve never heard before) I later added a Innuos Zen Mini and re-ripped all our CDs to FLAC on it, for backup and convenience. I run the CXC and Zen, as well as the TV sound, through the CXN for it’s slightly better DAC, but also it’s ease of use. My wife doesn’t like too much complication when listening to music and finds the CXN and Zen pairing to be ideal.

The CXA81 is strong, detailed, very good speaker driver control, the sound stage & depth is as described by Andrew. The sound was what I was looking for, like the very slight roll-off of the highs for Monitor Audio speakers. Analogue play-back sounds like audiophile integrated amps of the 70-80's. Pairing with the CXN v2 is wonderful. I prefer no phono preamp added cost.
Better sound (run flat) than the newer Yamaha A-Sxxx models, their sound controls are nice features, but slightly too bright for my taste. Chose the CXA81 over the Denon PMA-1600NE for cost savings but the Denon sounded very good.
It does compete with my reference system- Emotiva XMC, XPA system for 2-ch in some ways, especially vocals- very clear, precise, and natural. Bass is controlled and deep for an 80 watts amp.
What it lacks- would like to have a simple remote control for the amp and the remote volume control is too sensitive-increasing volume level is aggressive, no DAC or volume level read out.
Too many commenters never heard the CXA81, ignore them. The amp is well built, quality parts and it's overwhelming highly rated by most buyers

I watched your reviewed the CXA81 and the AXR100, I gave them both a second look, bought the CXA81 first and very pleased with its value. We needed a receiver for our Partio because, as you know, TX summers are long and we spend most of our free time outside. Ordered the AXR100 without hearing it, off the web, mostly from Kristi's comments. As you both stated- "no HDMI" but I would trade the HDMI for networking on my wish list. Compared to my recapped vintage Kenwood KR-4400, my CXA61 is quite nice. The vintage amp’s highs sing but it lacks lower mid bass thump. The CXA61 has punchy mids and better soundstage overall. It has remote volume control and can be used to stream audio from my Samsung tv. I enjoy them both.

It's interesting that you call out the addition of a DAC because people will likely use an external or the CXN V2 if they have it, but then also lament the absence of a built in phono stage. An internal DAC and/or Phono preamp will always be inferior to an external at this price point so if you're mad about either being included but simultaneously upset about the other NOT being included, that makes no sense. Otherwise, appreciate the review as always.

If you are music first, I would go integrated amp. There are a few options that have DIRAC like the one we just NAD here bit.ly/3aiYZBt or bit.ly/3CJHPG2. Alternatively, you could look at something like this from Marantz bit.ly/3N89HI7 which has HMDI but no room correction. You could look at the Evo bit.ly/33nrQNE - it wasn't my favorite but would have the warmth you mentioned as well as HDMI. If you are looking at Emotiva, check out this one bit.ly/3M32zfR and find a preamp you like with this amzn.to/3ntpiYE in the middle for DIRAC.

Great review as always Andrew. Here’s an amp I’d like to see you review, the Pioneer A70da. This amp is like the forgotten amp in the audiophile world. No reviews of note online like the ones you do. It’s a really great amplifier and I think it fills in some of your dislikes of the cxa81. It has a full size headphone jack unlike the cxa81, it also importantly has a MM and MC phono stage. Built in ess sabre dac, usb, optical and coaxial inputs and jeez it even has proper tone controls. It’s built like a tank too. I own one and I love it. I know you’ll get a lot of comments on TH-cam and might not see this one, but I think it’s an amplifier a lot of folk would like to see you review, because it just doesn’t get enough press and exposure, and it’s an amp I think a lot of folk will love.

My hearing is not really capable of zoning in on high frequency roll off. I can say on occasions I found cymbals difficult. But that is my system. Vocals are more forward than my tube amp.

Thank you for the excellent review. I was wondering what are your thoughts in comparing the Cambridge Audio CXA81 to the NAD C368 or C388? I am looking for and integrated with A/B speaker capability, built-in BT, built in DAC with at least 3 digital inputs. The price of the CXA81 slots between the NAD C368 at $999 and the NAD C388 at $1,700.

Having had one of these for a few months now, (With the CXN and CD transport also) I have to say, yeah, good and fair review! It’s a big improvement over the ageing 90s system it replaced, and mostly down to this amp. I’d agree it favours singer/songwriters, which I listen to a lot also. It needs turning up a bit with louder music to get the best out of it, so I wait till the wife and neighbours are out! Having said that it projects the sound a lot better than my old amp, (which was 100W) It still sounds clear at low volume if I go through into the kitchen which wasn’t the case with the old amp.

Great review, thanks for checking it out. I highly recommend checking out the audiolab 8300a, it's only like $800, no DAC, but the amplifier is amazing, compared to this cxa81 with it's 2 little mosfets per channel versus the 8300A's 4 beefy ones, it's designed a lot like some really expensive amplifiers, and I think it sounds amazing.

This is my favorite integrated so far. Add the CXN and some fun 80s music, this thing is a party with excellent imaging and soundstage. I think it’s particular with speakers so results may vary but with RP600s this thing is FUN. With the combo, all I have to do is hit a number (station preset) on the remote and enjoy beautiful music. But yes it’s irritating that using the CXN I’m wasting the DAC on the CXA81.
