    Slightly random but I’m glad so far no one has said or commented that the film “The Lighthouse” is based on the Flannan isle story when it’s not.
    It’s based on the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy which is in Wales

      I believe there is another film that may be based on this event, however. Gerard Butler was in it. The Vanishing was the title.

      It may have been the source of inspiration for the game Darkfall: Lights Out, though. I'm just speculating so I could be very, very wrong, but the way in which the lighthouse completely devoid of its keepers and lacking in signs of foul play remind me of the events that bring the protagonist to the Fetch Rock Lighthouse in the first place.

    The "Not Proven" verdict is unique to Scotland though I've more often heard it called "the bastards verdict" and carries a lot of stigma with it, it essentially reads as "we know you did, canny prove it, but we all know you did it," by people. Also, as someone who lived in Edinburgh most of their life the fact that Arthur's Seat was once 'countryside' and no just a hill in the middle of the city students and tourists trek up for a laugh and get surprised by how windy it is up the top, is something I'd not spent much time considering but aye, in the days of the auld city it would have been outside and everything around it undeveloped. Not weird its just how cities develop but I just never, thought about it before.

    The "not proven" verdict at the Madeline Smith trial is unique to Scotland. Simply put, the legal outcome is the same as "not guilty", but it has something of a stigma that "not guilty" doesn't. I've heard it described as saying to the accused, "Don't do it again."

    The general consensus on the 9th legion is that it was so badly mauled in the Boudiccan rebellion that it was slowly wound down. Survivors were reassigned to the other three legions in Britain and just not replaced, it was and still is common military practice - especially in cases where the unit involved has suffered an ignominious defeat. As happened with the I 'Germanica' Legion- it surrendered after a defeat and the remenants was merged with the remains of the VII Galbiana to create the VII Gemina.

    • @campbella2796
      @campbella2796 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think there is a general consensus. As regards the theory you mention I cannot see it taking so long to wind down a battle damaged legion. The 9th was involved in the invasion of Scotland AD80, 20 years after the Boudiccan revolt. That doesn't seem likely for a legion having suffered 20 years of winding down and being parcelled off to pad out other legions. With legionaries expected to serve about 20 years the 9th legion would've had almost a complete turnover of soldiers by the time it was sent to invade Scotland, where Tacitus notes that it was attacked and their camp breached. You could make the argument that it was after losses in that northern campaign that the Romans decided to disband it but it still seems to hang around for a very long time before disappearing from history, the last record of the 9th legion in Briton being in AD108. So it's very possible there is another military event we're not aware of which precipitated the 9th legion's final disappearance.

    • @randomobserver8168
      @randomobserver8168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know why but one sometimes sees Roman numerals written in that additive-only fashion- I don't know if there was a change in Roman practice, one or the other was actually by later Latin users, or just a competing pair of styles for centuries. But it does show up sometimes. I've also seen IIII for sure. XIIII maybe. Personally I think any more than three I induces eyestrain.

    Re- the Fairy Coffins. They were found on Arthur's Seat, named from King Arthur. Regardless, Arthur's Seat is in fact either a dormant or extinct volcano. Think that it is Scotland's only volcano. The Fairy Coffins, as you stated, were sold in auction for £4.00. That was quite a lot of money in the 1840's- 1850's, about £100.00 in today's money. Love all of the stories, especially the spooky ones!

      Yes, though VIIII was sometimes used. As with spelling in most languages until recently, use of Roman numerals varied in time and place and evolved over time. Even the way the number 9 is written by us still varies, as does 7, though rarely cause confusion. IX (and IV) are called Subtractive Notation, and are more recent developments, used sporadically during Roman times, most often in formal circumstances, and almost exclusively since at least AD900 or so by scholars, mostly monks.

    Late 1960s in Scotland had Bible John, Peter Tobin was 2006. one question in regards to that:how would a serial killer from the late 1960s survive to murder 3 people in 2006? that is at most a 40 year gap

    • @velouris76
      @velouris76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think the most likely reason is because Tobin had moved to the south coast of England, and lived in Southern England from 1969 until the late 80’s, and is strongly suspected of killing far, far more people than the ones he has been convicted for (I.e the ones in the 2000’s).
      The fact that he moved from one end of the UK to the other, at a time when local Police forces had less communication with each other, would have been a factor, plus Policing at the time relied on witnesses descriptions and fingerprints, and not CCTV and DNA.
      It’s strongly believed by many that he was behind at least one murder in the south coast area of England in the mid 80’s,, and most likely many, many more unsolved murders in the area before this date, but there’s not as yet been enough definite proof to show that Tobin was definitely the person responsible, and he has never talked about or confessed that he was behind this and other murders in the area.
      Regarding Bible John, he was still in the Glasgow area until 1969 when he moved to England, and that coincides with when the Bible John murders stopped, plus there is a resemblance between the photo fits and descriptions of Bible John, and photos of Tobin from this time, when he was in his mid to late 20’s.

      Don't think the 61 year old in the story was drunk tho? What's your point? He was coming home from work. I am also from Livingston and remember when the gentleman died. He was very well respected and sensible which gave his story a spooky amount of credibility.

    Actually, in Roman numerals, the 9th Legion would be represented as "Leg(ion) IX" and not "Leg*VIIII [sic] Hispana", as shown in the video; no 'letter-as-numeral' was (/is) ever repeated more than twice - ie, the 'original' and then up to twice again - to express/represent any number, eg: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, etc. But then again of course, "who's counting" 😄...?! And also - in the case of Robert Taylor's alleged, 1979, alien encounter - just what became of his dog, with whom he'd apparently been walking when that "encounter" occurred? *¬*Simon*/TopTenz ** 💜💙💜

    Scotland didn't vote for UKIP or the Tories or Brexit. England did. Scotland didn't vote for Thatcher or the destruction of the shipyards, steelworks, coal mines and the entire industrial base. England did. Scotland doesn't want nuclear weapons yet England ditches theirs on Scottish soil. Scotland hasn't voted Tory in over 70 years but people in England think Boris Johnson is fit to hold public office! Now that really is a mystery. Scotland is the only nation in the world to discover oil and gas and get poorer as a result. It's the only nation on earth whose entire media is controlled by it's neighbour.
    Regardless, next year when Scotland votes to remove it's self from the shackles of "union" which were forced upon it by (once again) England and becomes a fully independent republic and member of the EU we can start working out mysteries like what England is going to do without Scottish water and natural resources. Given Scotland already produces 175% of it's power needs through renewables alone and holds 96% of the fresh water in the British Isles while England is completely dependent on these resources it becomes clear to even the most swivel eyed, willing idiot that England is going to have to learn it's place and dig deep to pay for the resources it currently steals. Shall we start at 10p a litre for drinking water and take it from there?

    A giant wave as the culprit in the Flannan Isles mystery doesn't really make sense given the diary entries. The wave idea is a theory grounded in reality, but only if you decide to ignore all the things that made it a mystery.
