One of the better fitness guys out there. Talks a lot of good sense and truth 👌 I’m nearly 36 years old, been working out since I was 19. Did all the supplements and energy drinks, bulking powders at the start when I didn’t know much about it all 😂 What I’ve realised is all you need is to drink enough water (not tap with fluoride and all that bad stuff in it), that give you more energy than energy drinks that are all processed. Have an espresso or black coffee about an hour before your workout. Guarana is also a good natural caffeine stimulant (only need less than half a teaspoon mixed in a shot glass of water). Food wise, the more organic whole foods and unprocessed the better. You’ll have more energy naturally, your gut health is better, you’ll have more vitamins in your system, will rarely get sick (in my experience), will look younger for longer etc etc. Stay away from processed sugar as much as possible. A treat every now and then is fine of course, you need to enjoy life, but the less processed suger you eat the less you’ll crave it. Again go for organic whole fruits as much as you can if you feel like you need something sweet. Natural sugars from whole fruit is better for your overall health (not blended or fruit juice). Eating McDonald’s etc is full of processed rubbish - get off that crap as much as possible! If you feel the need to bulk, then eat more organic sweet potato, avocados, nuts, and more protein like beef steak and chicken, high quality olive oil. Only supplements you’ll ever need is a good quality whey protein powder mixed with a high quality creatine powder too for after a workout. Anything else is all marketing hype. Don’t need pre-workout, just an espresso and lots of water (especially if you’re under 45 years old). If you don’t have the energy for a workout then you’re not eating right, not drinking enough water, not sleeping enough, or you have some vitamin deficiency probably - so get some blood tests to find out what’s going on. Workout wise, compound movements for the bulk of your workouts with some isolation movements at the end of a workout for a little pump at the end. Workout 4-5 days a week is the sweet spot. Don’t fall in to the marketing hype of all these energy/hydration drinks, pre-workout supplements and bulking powders. They’re all processed in some way, have stuff in there you don’t need in your body, and it’s not the best for your heart, gut health, and overall health and wellness. Clean, organic, unprocessed foods and good quality water either spring/mineral water from glass bottles, or filtered tap through reverse osmosis with the minerals added back in (look it up 😉), and good coffee is what you need. Consistency is key like anything you want to be successful in. Enjoy the journey and don’t expect immediate results, just keep at it over time improving one week, one month, one year at a time. Hope that helps 😂 That’s my experience from working out naturally for about 17 years and growing and maintaining a good physique with not the best genetics.
as a 35 year old who is in exactly the same position (been training naturally since 18) I would say this is really solid overall advice to be honest. Many people younger or new to training in general take note of this stuff it really is worth it's weight in gold. The majority of the supplements/pre-workouts etc as you say are useless and just not needed. Sort out your diet and hydration first and that will do a world of difference. Creatine monohydrate and a good quality protein powder are useful but not totally essential (hence the name supplements). Both are relatively cheap. Two things I would add are: 1. Not to ever neglect your sleep/recovery. This is such an important factor. More work in the gym is not always the answer and over training is a real thing and can lead to injuries (ask my left shoulder from 6 years ago). Having two young children and therefore a less than perfect sleep pattern really makes a difference in not only our overall energy levels in the gym but also your ability to recover for the next session. Limiting screens in the 1-2hrs before bed and I found not eating within 1 hour of sleeping helps a lot. Also be as consistent with bedtimes as you can be realistically. 2. Hydration is not just about water, sodium especially is an essential element. I have 1/2 teaspoon of salt about 20mins before i workout and i can train for longer with more energy during my sessions (especially in the summer when the gym is hotter). This along with a couple of dates, some raw organic honey and a banana I have found to be the perfect workout fuel combination and guess what they're all cheap (even the honey as you don't need much at all) All the best for your fitness journey Stuart.

I am 56 and have been weight training for 42 years and have to agree with a lot of what Matt says there is a lot of miss information out there and I weigh 120 kg and don't have a lot of fat
Matt's being a bit naive about the reason why sports bodies aren't running the drug-testing that he went through IMO. Obviously, it takes a lot of time and money, that's always going to come into it, but elite-level sports HAVE all the time and money to run these tests if they wanted to. The real reason, if we're all honest here, is because there are entire fields of sports that CANNOT exist as we know them without PED's. You wouldn't have 2017 Eddie Hall strict-pressing someone's deadlift max like a broom handle, because it is physically impossible to maintain that level of size and strength without the drugs. A completely, 100% drug-free World's Strongest Man would have competitors half the size lifting half the weight, the viewership would nosedive off a cliff. In all likelihood, the management know that their sport depends on the drugs, and purposefully leave the drug-tests lax enough to be worked-around for that reason.
I focus almost purely on weightlifting but I still can admit that fitness is the most important one. Weightlifting isn't very helpful in day to day life and if you get too big it's actually a hindrance. Fitness is a huge help in day to day life it makes everything you do all day easier if you have a higher fitness level. I also disagree that everyone looks better with muscle. I think only a small percentage of people look better bulky most look better with a normal fit looking physique. This guy seems very biased and is giving out bad advice
Really disappointing the people on this podcast have such a bad mindset towards fitness because fitness always comes before money because when doing business when people see you have discipline and healthy body they respect you and are willing to do business with you more because they your a good person to do it with and you will have more energy in the day.
