In Algeria, There're actually, three different musical traditions (schools) related to Islamic Hispania, commonly known as al-Andaloussi / Algerian classical music, etc. The San'a of Algiers, related to Cordoba, the San'a of Tlemcen (aka Gharnâta, i.e. Granada), related to Cordoba and thereafter, to Granada. Finally, the Maluf of Constantine, related to Sevilla. In this video, Beihdja RAHAL interprets a Mseddar (المصدر) (the first movement of the Algerian Nuba*) from the San'a of Algiers, in the Mezmoum mode (one of the seven fundamental modes of the Algerian classical music) which was composed by Abi Uthman Sa'id al-Mandasi (an Algerian poet from the 17th century). The poet shows his love to a princess from the city of Tlemcen (or maybe the city in itself). * The Algerian Nûba is composed of five vocal parts or movements (Mizân) and four instrumental pieces (Mshalya / Mestakhbar a-San'a and Tushiyya) ; - Dayra : vocal improvisation - Mshalya / Mestakhbar a-San'a : instrumental improvisation - Tushiyya : instrumental ouverture (1) Mseddar (2) Btayhi (3) Derdj - Tushiyyat al-insirafat : an interlude to anounce the Insiraf (4) Insiraf (5) Khalas / Makhlas. - Tushiyyat al-Kamâl : lit. "interlude of perfection", is an instrumental piece to close a Nûba.

Yes, this piece of anthology (Bashraf kabir : the great ouverture, also known as Bashraf Murabba') belongs to the school of Constantine where it is used to open a Nûba in the Zidan (Zaydan) mode (particullarly, a Nûba Mdjenba). It is an interresting relic of the algerian music, as it was composed on five different modes (Hssin, Sika, Dil, Zidan and Muhayyar) and the different phrases were separated by instrumental improvisations (Istikhbar). You may like to review this chef-d'œuvre with Salim FERGANI (music.th-cam.com/video/PHwRazcq3OE/w-d-xo.html).
