George Russell: F1's Most Hated Man (somehow...)

  • So George Russell should have been handed his P45 or REMOVED for his oopsie with Lewis Hamilton - no. Just no.
    According to a British sportscar driver, Russell should've been sacked for the incident...where nobody was harmed and Mercedes went on to secure their best result of the season with a double podium thanks to their brand new upgrades. Here's why I think that's unfair and why I'm starting to suspect that the world of Formula 1 is turning its back on George after years of supporting him now that he has realised his dream of driving full-time for Merecedes and Toto Wolff...not to mention that Mercedes think he's good enough for a contract extension to 2025 supposedly.

    I think Russell's main problem (as someone who liked his driving but thought he was an AI) is that when he was an underdog in a Williams he could get away with having his elbows out and getting aggressive with other drivers because the Williams was quite slow in race trim and he was having to score points for two drivers essentially since Nicky was just there for vibes and money. That aggression turns immediately into punching down though once you're in a top level car like the mercedes so battering a Haas out of your way goes from a fair fight to clubbing a seal. He's never taken responsibility for any of his incidents and with the exception of Hungary 2021 when he told the team to prioritise Latifi (good on him there) he's generally just been meh off track, unapologetic when he gets it wrong and not realising that his situation has changed

    • @LawVS
      @LawVS  ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I see your point there. It feels like George is a very blunt person who will tell you straight about something and not give you any fluff. Treat you with respect and not sugarcoat something. ACTUALLY, kinda like Max in a way but more British. Hence why it's fascinating to see him and Max argue since they're both the same in that regard.

    Imo a lot of the videos about why Russell is hated leave out one important part, the fact that he has no self reflection whenever he crashes or turns into another driver, for example bottas, mick, sainz and perez are all victims of his kamikaze shenanigans on track but according to him they were all at fault

    • @LawVS

    The reaction to the incident seems to have been blown out of proportion, especially with this driver's take! At the time, I was like 'What was Russell doing?' as he let Sainz by and then obviously got in Hamilton's way as they both started their laps, but it was a clear miscommunication, these things happen.
    These 180s in fan perception of some drivers are mad. Russell seemingly over the last year and a bit, Vettel from how he was viewed at RBR to when he was at Ferrari and Aston (which is probably the most stark example for me). Any other examples?
    Besides, fan opinions on drivers are a minefield I very much try and stay away from these days with the tribalism that's become more prevalent over the last couple of years, especially where the likes of Hamilton, Verstappen and Alonso are concerned. It's getting like football.
    That is one of the reasons I find it hard to know what to think of 2021, I both loved and hated that season.
    Loved: the title battle, McLaren vs Ferrari for 3rd in the Constructors throughout the year (which I honestly enjoyed more than the title fight), Hungary was bonkers, France was surprisingly good, Monza (no explaination needed I'm sure), and even Sochi, even with its ending: yes Norris denied himself his first win but Hamilton got his 100th win, so swings and roundabouts.
    Hated: the title battle, the war of words between Red Bull and Mercedes especially after Silverstone, which for me was clearly the point where everything blew up, Spa, some of the later races left me with somewhat sour tastes, neither Hamilton or Verstappen covering themselves in glory at points with some of their driving, especially Verstappen in Brazil and Saudi Arabia, and the end of the race in Abu Dhabi (Hamilton staying out and Verstappen pitting was fine, nothing wrong with that, and nothing necessarily wrong with a one lap shootout, though I'm not a fan of it, e.g. at this year's Indy 500. My main issue with the end of Abu Dhabi was the way the lapped cars were handled, i.e. initially not allowing any of them to unlap themselves, and then not allowing all the lapped cars to unlap themselves when they decided to allow it) and the aftermath of it.

    • @LawVS

He is as sincerely humble as he is sincerely proud of and determined to develop off of, the success he has seen as a Merc driver, and when that bubbles to the top of the plot lines of F1, it’s far easier to take pot shots at him

    Even as it happened this looked like an "oopsie Daisy" rather than a "haha got him" to me. And then we saw the different perspectives and heard the comments from everyone and it became even clearer that the team as a whole just messed up. George didn't know Lewis was coming up from behind at full speed and Lewis didn't know George didn't know. That's essentially it. A silly and embarrassing miscommunication by the team that almost cost them, but for the skill and judgement of their drivers.

    The only criticism of George I kinda understand is his Mercedes PR in every interview. Some people think it’s corny and he’s always talking up Merc but honestly, I just think he’s grateful to be in the position he’s in. If he plays his cards right, he could be the #1 driver after Lewis retires. George wants to win and he wants to beat Lewis. He races him fair, they both do. That incident between them wasn’t nearly anything close to what we saw with Nico and Lewis. I think George just needs to be more patient. He capitalized on a lot his first year with Merc to secure good points in many races, even giving Merc their only win at Brazil. George is a future world champ and I can’t wait for the day future gets removed from that sentence.

    Regardless, it's embarrassing hearing him come up with ideas on the radio that either get shot down OR fail. (maybe slicks in the wet or some crazy SHT.) still 2nd to Charles though. THAT guy is straight up cringy when he tries to talk the pit wall into helping him finish in front of Carlos who, IMO should be in #1 position due to the fact he probably won't spin every-single-time Max applies pressure from behind.

    I liked him previous year and though he had a lot of potential but since the start of this year I do keep losing respect. After the first race he was already about to cry because Red Bull was going to win every race and he was ready to throw in the towel. George is my favourite driver, but I am not biased towards him, I've always agreed with the penalties he has been given in the past and so on. But people give him way too much crap for no real reason. And how does it make sense for Mercedes to sack George, he's their future team leader that they've invested on for many years, and has already proved to be really fast and consistent.

    • @LawVS
      @LawVS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Mercedes are thinking the same as you, Nick; since they've most likely extended his contract to 2025 off the back of the weekend. I think what people don't like about George, now that he's in the spotlight, is that he's very to the point. He's honest to a fault and sometimes people don't want to hear honesty or cookie-cutter media responses. Also, I'm sure whatever things he has with drivers is probably dealt in private with said driver instead of doing it indirectly over TV interviews.
