Yeah, Charles' voice is fantastic, but he uses head voice for the high notes and Ryan really pushes a lot of air through to hit the high notes instead - which can be riskier (cos if you don't hit it, sounds like a wreck) but really puts that grunt behind it dynamically. Dig it. Or at least that's my limited understanding from three lessons with a singing teacher. I'm sure someone more qualified could say more.
Both are so great ! Damn it's hard to choose so i don't ^^ I discovered the song with Vulf and felt in love at first seconds and Charles is an amazing Soul and Blues singer. I love his voice in his interpretation. the difference between both come from their different range of tones and physical constitution too. But i got to give the main part of credits to Ryan because it's his creation in which he put his soul and worked for that's why i can't choose one. You got the original One and the Ultimate Remix One ^^ Deal with it XD
Came as a HUGE Vulfpeck fan. This is one of their best songs in my opinion and i had no idea it's a cover! And somehow i like this one even better, i think the mix is a bit more pleasant to the ear. Also love the guitar solo. Incredible job Ryan!
My wife's re-watching Parenthood for the umpteenth time, and I've just walked through the living room to hear this playing in the background of one of the scenes. Did not know anyone was aware of this song prior to Vulfpeck. Great stuff!
I just had my mind blown. I've been binging the hell out of this song lately cause it's one of my favorite Vulfpeck songs, and I just found out it's a cover of a song featuring none other than Ben Folds who is one of my favorite artists of all time. I even have a tattoo of the Ben Folds Five logo on my arm.
So I just found this by looking you up after hearing "Lonelytown" by Vulfpeck, and looking in the credits to see Ryan Lerman listed as the composer. Guess things have come full circle?!
AH this always gets stuck in my head when I hear it! BUT it's not like one of those crappy pop songs that you HATE when it gets stuck in your head. This gets stuck in my head and I never want it to get out! SUCH a sick groove/riff.
Ben looks like Elton John with those shades !!! LOL! GREAT SONG RYAN AS USUAL!!! I saw you on the ♈️ulfpek at Madison Square Garden concert video 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Just want to say ryan your music is great ...I listen to you everyday ...you got the empathy and meaning in your words I feel you when you sing Dee , Great Britain uk
9 years after the upload, youtube decides "Hey, this guy has watched everything uploaded by ryanlerman, Scary Pockets and Stories since 2014. Maybe he might want to watch this..." =.O Wonderful song and incredibly sharp production for youtube anno 2012 :)
And suddenly I understand why he took a break from chewing gum and filming the show with an iPhone to play the guitar on this song when Vulf played MSG
awesome and inspiring! Been going through your videos for the last week stumbled across whilst searching for Larry Goldings then to find your also playing with Ben Folds. Love it
I was listening to this all day on the 4th of July....definitely my favorite song on the album! Awesome work! You and Ben did the world some good! And THANK YOU so much for working with Nataly on my cover. YOU'RE THE BEST!
Dear Ryan, I really love your songs. Past. Present. Future. Please keep on playing, recording, being. Btw: our band's already a SP Patron. Hope you do well!
Goddamn man! i'm glad i came here through vulf cause it feels like otherwise i wouldnt even have stumbled across this ABSOLUTE GEM of a song. why does it feel like an insanely famous song in the past from some alternate timeline? my point being; great fucking song sir. you've earned a fan/sub!
Dude, I get the same feeling with a lot of vulf/Ryan/Theo songs. I don't believe in supernatural stuff, I know that they "just" push certain buttons (I'm talking arrangement wise and also in regards to the general sound and feel, not in a literal sense) and all that but also what's up with "Mexico"?! I mean I know that song. I know it like I shouldn't know a song that I've only known for a couple of months. It's like it's always been there, like I'ts been in my playlist since 6th grade.
[Verse 1] Baby I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you We found your little note Shoulda had a talk with you [Chorus] 'Cause you’ve been on my mind I know I was out of line Telling Dad I’m giving up on you I don’t want to [Verse 2] I called you on the phone But I can’t get through to you I bought a ticket home Now I’m dreading seeing you [Chorus] 'Cause you give me no choice With your selfish attitude You’ll be pleasant if it suits your mood Well fuck that [Guitar Solo] [Bridge] We get older in slow motion Don't you throw it all away [Chorus] Cause you’ve been on my mind I know I was out of line Telling Dad I’m giving up on you You know I don’t want to [Outro] 'Cause baby, I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you 'Cause baby, I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you Yeah baby, I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you Baby, I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you No baby, I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you No baby, I don’t know What I’m gonna do with you Oh do with you
Didn't even realize Vulfpeck's cover was a cover!
Holy shit you wrote this? I thought it was just another great Vulfpeck song! Love this!!
Gibson 336 // 1964 Princeton Reverb // Z-Vex Box of Rock // MXR Carbon Copy
how is Ryan not famous??!!??!!
Great stuff, man.
It honestly pisses me off lol
He's famous to musicians, I believe he's a session musician that's why Ben Folds know him
I think he is quite famous already
He’s getting there!!!
Because he is not looper man Ed Sheeran!
Came here from vulfpeck's new vid. This shit is dope.
As much as I love the Vulfpeck version musically, I will always prefer the vocals on this one. You really nail those high notes.
Yeah, Charles' voice is fantastic, but he uses head voice for the high notes and Ryan really pushes a lot of air through to hit the high notes instead - which can be riskier (cos if you don't hit it, sounds like a wreck) but really puts that grunt behind it dynamically. Dig it.

Came as a HUGE Vulfpeck fan.

Also love the guitar solo.
Incredible job Ryan!
This is such a bitter little tune.
Cheap and dirty, I love it.
holy shit, I have been with this song for 8 years already?
Ben Folds has incredible vocal folds
My wife's re-watching Parenthood for the umpteenth time, and I've just walked through the living room to hear this playing in the background of one of the scenes. Did not know anyone was aware of this song prior to Vulfpeck. Great stuff!
Funky and low volume!

Hayden Lueck dude amazing! I wanna see that tattoo
That guitar...is so...rich. It's neat how you use such a full sound to contrast the choppiness of the song. Great job!
WOAH!!
I thought this was that other dudes song from that live MSG show!!
I'm WAY BEHIND on the NEW music!! LOL
Ryan, you just the best man.
Thanks dood
Beautiful
I don't know how I hadn't heard of Ryan before today. SO GOOD. Thanks, Vulf!

Exatamente. Beijos do Brasil.
So I just found this by looking you up after hearing "Lonelytown" by Vulfpeck, and looking in the credits to see Ryan Lerman listed as the composer. Guess things have come full circle?!

Folds in flannel... I can dig it. And this song is badass!
This is the most underappreciated song I know. It's ridiculous really.
My favorite song of yours! Excellent work with Ben! You're both rock stars!
I’m literally fucking crying my new favorite artist my old favorite artist playing my forever favorites bands new song
Home recording at it's finest!
Amazing! Why is Ryan not in the radio and TV yet? He is awesome.🥰🥰🥰
AH this always gets stuck in my head when I hear it! BUT it's not like one of those crappy pop songs that you HATE when it gets stuck in your head. This gets stuck in my head and I never want it to get out! SUCH a sick groove/riff.

Great song, great duo. Nice.
Sir this song is soo dope, funky and low volume! i love it
Absolutely amazing song, I picked up this one and a few others from Amazon.
He hits a high D like it's nothing. It's crazy; he so rarely shows his range, but he uses it so well.
Your videos and songs and everything are just ... gold. I'm absolutely in love. Please never stop doing what you do.
Love the vocal high notes!
Wow. I love the song!!
just fantastic once again!!
Reminiscent of the Beatles. I loved it!
just joining the party of learning this is not a Vulfpeck original, this version is great, has its own vibe

Loving the new album! You are a musical god amongst TH-camrs sir! Rocking it out right now.
A great song turned into a masterpiece with a little bit of Charles Jones and Joe Dart magic.
I met you after a Ben Folds show in Cincinnati a few years ago! You're so talented!
This is stellar! You're an amazing songwriter and multiinstrumentalist!
And congrats for getting to work with Ben Folds!
this song is so good this video deserves at least 1 or 2 million views
I wish I was watching (errr listening) in 2012
I guess it’s the vocal PLUS the piano... I’m getting Dr. Dog vibes.
Good good good
Dear Ryan, I really love your songs. Past. Present. Future. Please keep on playing, recording, being. Btw: our band's already a SP Patron. Hope you do well!
It's a travesty that you dont have more subs. Pure talent
Great song, the SOUND reminds me of Simon Dawes' "Salute the institution". Have you listened to it? cheers all the way.
Ryan!! What amp/drive sound were you using on the lead guitar stuff?? Sounds so great.
Yo! 1964 Princeton Reverb // Z-Vex Box of Rock // MXR Carbon Copy

Ha great song - did Ben really record his vocals on the SM57??
[Verse 1]
Baby I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
We found your little note
Shoulda had a talk with you
[Chorus]
'Cause you’ve been on my mind
I know I was out of line
Telling Dad I’m giving up on you
I don’t want to
[Verse 2]
I called you on the phone
But I can’t get through to you
I bought a ticket home
Now I’m dreading seeing you
[Chorus]
'Cause you give me no choice
With your selfish attitude
You’ll be pleasant if it suits your mood
Well fuck that
[Guitar Solo]
[Bridge]
We get older in slow motion
Don't you throw it all away
[Chorus]
Cause you’ve been on my mind
I know I was out of line
Telling Dad I’m giving up on you
You know I don’t want to
[Outro]
'Cause baby, I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
'Cause baby, I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
Yeah baby, I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
Baby, I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
No baby, I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
No baby, I don’t know
What I’m gonna do with you
Oh do with you
Ben Folds is the thesaurus entry for 'Cool'. Look it up.
TAKE MY MONEY!! This is so damn good!
This is a week overdue, but I just heard you on Parenthood. Congrats!!
